Browser Tools Can Help Block Tracking by Social Networks ...

Those small buttons on Web sites that are designed to let you share what you?ve read with your social networks have an equally important function: They let the social networks track your travels on the Web, whether or not you click on them. Now, there are a growing number of start-ups offering tools that help consumers keep that kind of tracking at bay.

Social ?widgets,? as they are called, have proliferated across the Web: a ?like? button from Facebook or a cheery blue bird from Twitter. They act as eyes on the Web. They watch you as you read the day?s news, say, or research health information, or shop for rain boots.

Facebook is especially ubiquitous. Academic researchers in France and Australia recently found that more than 20 percent of the 10,000 most popular Web sites have a Facebook widget. That widget allows the social networking giant to keep track of which Web sites they visit, whether or not the Internet user is logged on to Facebook at the time.

Twitter goes one step further. Its ?tweet? button can be found on 7 percent of the top sites, the same study found. One of the tracking cookies set by Twitter allows it to track users who have never even visited Twitter.com, let alone have a Twitter account. ?Twitter is still waiting for them,? Mohamed Ali Kaafar, of the National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control, known as Inria, in France.

The latest widget-scrubbing tool was released this week from PrivacyChoice, of Santa Cruz, Calif. It is a browser extension that monitors how tight your privacy settings are on Facebook and Google, including the option of disabling Facebook and Google Plus share buttons. In the first 24 hours, its president, Jim Brock, said, 50,000 used the tool, which the company calls PrivacyFix and offers for free.

?Our No. One job here is to educate, not to push people to particular choices,? said Mr. Brock. ?I don?t think your average user has any idea that those little buttons are listening posts.?

Disconnect.Me, a Menlo Park, Calif., start-up, likewise, offers a browser extension for Google Chrome and lets users see just how many companies are tracking them on every Web site they visit. Those trackers include analytics companies, advertising networks and social networks.

Brian Kennish, a former Google engineer who started Disconnect.me, said it has drawn 850,000 active users. It is free.

Another company, called Ghostery, offers several browser extension to allow users to keep track of the trackers, including social network plug-ins. For instance, it found six trackers when I opened my Firefox browser to The New York Times?s home page, including from Google and Facebook.

Social network widgets can help Web site publishers because they help their visitors share content with their friends online.

Total Recall: Christopher Walken's Best Movies

We count down the best-reviewed work of the Seven Psychopaths star.

Christopher Walken

From junior soap star to Oscar-winning film actor, Saturday Night Live mainstay, and music video legend, Christopher Walken has carved out one of the most cheerfully inimitable career paths in Hollywood since making his screen debut nearly 60 years ago. This weekend, the amazingly prolific actor -- who's acted in nearly 30 films over the last 10 years alone -- pops up in Seven Psychopaths, so we decided to take the opportunity to take a fond look back at some of his most critically beloved performances. Break out your cowbells, it's time for Total Recall!

81%

Ever wondered what the word "latrine" means? Look no further than Biloxi Blues. In one of the most colorfully memorable scenes from Mike Nichols' adaptation of the Neil Simon play, Walken's marvelously named Sergeant First Class Merwin J. Toomey provides a rather in-depth definition for his latest batch of U.S. Army recruits. This being a family site, we can't reprint the whole thing; suffice it to say that it's pronounced, as Toomey puts it, "La-trine, from the French." The interplay between Walken and Biloxi's star, Matthew Broderick, was what set the movie apart for the New York Times' Vincent Canby, who chortled, "With superb performances by Mr. Broderick and Christopher Walken, who plays Mr. Simon's nearly unhinged, very funny variation on the drill sergeant of movie myth, Biloxi Blues has a fully satisfying life of its own."

84%

Adding a cop mustache, co-starring support from Sean Penn, and a Madonna hit on the soundtrack to Walken's arsenal, 1986's At Close Range dramatized the tragic real-life story of a Pennsylvania crime family whose patriarch (played by Walken) returns from exile to darken the lives of his grown sons (Sean and Chris Penn). In spite of its compelling story and excellent cast -- which included Mary Stuart Masterson, Kiefer Sutherland, and Crispin Glover -- the movie didn't make much of an impact at the box office, but it resonated with critics like Roger Ebert, who wrote that "Penn and Walken [are] at the top of their forms in roles that give them a lot to work with."

84%

If you're filming a musical and you need someone to play a singing, dancing pimp, there's really only one person to call. Walken added a little bit of off-kilter genius to 1981's Pennies from Heaven, screenwriter Dennis Potter's adaptation of his hit BBC miniseries about an unhappy married couple during trying economic times; here, directed by Herbert Ross and starring Steve Martin as a Depression-era sheet music salesman, it went down as one of the decade's more ignominious flops at the box office, although it's gained something of a cult following over the years -- and it's always been a favorite among critics like Mark Athitakis of Flimcritic.com, who called it "Dark as night but perfectly lit, a little sad but with a song in its heart."

89%

Walken earned a Saturn Award nomination for his role in David Cronenberg's The Dead Zone, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel about a psychic (played by Walken) who discovers that a Presidential candidate (Martin Sheen) will trigger nuclear war if elected -- and sets about planning a one-man assassination attempt. Unlike a number of 1980s King adaptations, The Dead Zone proved successful with audiences as well as critics; Luke Y. Thompson of New Times called this "The classic Walken role, by which all subsequent ones are measured" and argued that it's "Possibly the best Stephen King adaptation too."

91%

We don't normally include single-scene roles in Total Recall, but Christopher Walken's appearance in True Romance is something special -- in fact, the character he plays in the movie, Vincenzo Coccotti, boasts his own Wikipedia entry, thanks to the memorably racist monologue delivered by Dennis Hopper during their few moments of shared screentime. And as for the rest of the movie, which stars Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette as a couple on the run from bloodthirsty mobsters? It isn't bad either. As TIME's Richard Corliss observed at the time, "If shoot-'em-up, gobble-'em-down movies like The Fugitive and Jurassic Park are rated PG-13 these days, what does an R-rated action adventure look like? Like True Romance: violent to a fault, glam to the max."

Theme parks offer frightfully good fun for Halloween

2 hrs.

Vampires, zombies and serial killers, oh my. Officially?speaking, Halloween is still a month away,?but it seems the bloodsuckers and flesh munchers are already on the prowl. For now, though, they?re?not showing up on people?s doorsteps, but rather, in theme parks from Orlando?to Anaheim.

?Halloween to the theme parks is the equivalent of?Christmas,? said Dennis Speigel, president of International Theme Park Services?Inc., a Cincinnati-based theme park consulting company. ?It?s the industry?s?single biggest promotional event.?

It?wasn't?always that way. Back in 1973, Halloween was just?another slow, off-season day, at least until Larry Vincent?a TV horror-movie host?in Los Angeles?known as Sinister Seymour?went looking for a venue where he?could put on a film festival. He found Knott?s Berry Farm and the rest, as they?say, is history.

?They hung some decorations from the rides and had maybe a?half-dozen monsters in the street,? said park spokesperson Jennifer Blazey. ?It?was only three nights, but it was a huge hit.?

And destined to spread faster than the virus in ?Resident?Evil.??

Today, parks across the country get taken over by zombie hordes and?insane clown posses almost every weekend from mid-September to the end of?October. Mazes are set up, rides are transformed and evil creatures of every?stripe walk the streets. At some parks, the production values rival Hollywood?s?best efforts,?and the experience is so intense, they?re not recommended for?young children and preteens.

In fact, the scare-fests seem to get more intense every year?even as they build on a concept that, psychologically at least, traces its?roots to that long-ago day when a young caveman jumped out from behind a tree?to frighten a potential mate.

?Scaring is an emotional high,? said Jamie O?Boyle, senior?analyst at The Center for Cultural Studies & Analysis in Philadelphia. ?You?get a good scare, it?s very arousing.?

If that gets your heart rate up, the following haunts are?all offering new ways to evoke that age-old emotion:

Horror Nights:?Universal Orlando
Now in its 22nd year, Horror Nights was recently named ?the?country?s best Halloween event? for the fifth consecutive year by the industry?trade magazine, ?Amusement Today.? It may slay the competition again this year thanks to new haunted houses based on ?The Walking Dead? TV show, the ?Silent?Hill? video game/movie franchise, the musical stylings of shock-rocker Alice?Cooper and the dark, edgy magic of Penn & Teller, who, it seems, have?accidentally turned Las Vegas into a smoking, radioactive ruin. Oops.

(NBC News and Universal Orlando are both owned by?NBCUniversal.)

Fright Fest: Six?Flags Great America
Opening Sept. 29, Fright Fest will feature the usual?suspects ? escaped inmates, demented demons, chainsaw-wielding zombies ? along?with five new shows and attractions. For the first time, the festivities will?extend into Hurricane Harbor, where the ?dried-up? Roaring Rapids ride has been?transformed into Wicked Woods, a freaky forest inhabited by the likes of?Sasquatch and Mothman.

Not creepy enough for you? Sign up for one of the park?s Friday?Night Feast, and you can compete with other guests to see who can eat five live?cockroaches in five minutes or less.

Halloween Haunt:?Kings Island
Twelve haunted attractions, 20 dizzying rides and 500?creatures that would give Wes Craven the willies ? and that?s just for?starters. This year, the park is adding three new fright sites, including Madame?Fatale?s Cavern of Terror, a freakish museum/maze full of oddities and wax?creations. For an extra fee, hungry visitors can start their tour with a?family-style dinner with the undead, although we suspect keeping the meal down?could be a problem.

Howl-O-Scream: Busch?Gardens Williamsburg
When the sun goes down, the so-called ?Dark?Side of the?Gardens? comes alive. On the paths, roaming hordes harass the passersby; onstage, a new live show offers a macabre musical journey, and in a new?greenhouse-themed haunted house, ?the seeds of evil? have purportedly been?sewn. If you need a shot of courage, the vampire bartenders at the new OPEN?CASKet bar have just the thing.

Halloween Haunt:?Knott?s Berry Farm
What started out with a handful of monsters and a few ride?decorations has now mutated into one of the biggest, scariest fright fests?around. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Halloween Haunt will?feature 13 mazes, including five new ones; nine live shows, four scare zones and a cast?of more than 1,000 characters.?For those with a sense of nostalgia ? or,?perhaps, a weak heart ? the park has also just opened a special museum filled?with memorabilia and artifacts from previous haunts.

Sinister Seymour, may he rest in peace, would be proud.

NanoString breast cancer test wins CE mark

MDBR Staff Writer
Published 28 September 2012

NanoString Technologies has gained rights to market its PAM50-based gene expression test for breast cancer in the European Union and other countries recognizing the CE mark.

The test, which runs on the company's nCounter analysis system, provides a subtype classification of breast cancer based on the intrinsic subtyping of an individual's breast tumor.

The company said Prognostic score that predicts the probability of cancer recurrence over 10 years in post-menopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early stage breast cancer (ESBC) will also be provided.

The approval was based on positive results from the company's first clinical validation study which included more than 1,000 samples from the TransATAC study as well as recently completed multi-site analytical validation study.

NanoString Technologies diagnostics senior vice president and general manager Bruce Seeley said the company has completed the first regulatory filing of PAM50-based diagnostic test in less than two years after beginning its rigorous clinical development program.

"Women and their clinicians in countries that accept the CE Mark will soon have a new option for informing important treatment decisions, and for bringing more certainty to those decisions," Seeley added.

"This filing is right on the heels of the landmark study from The Cancer Genome Atlas that demonstrated the power of the PAM50 for subtyping breast cancer into four distinct diseases, and importantly the clinical use of intrinsic subtyping is already included in the St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Treatment Guidelines."

The company is planning to start marketing its breast cancer testing kit in the EU and other countries recognizing the CE mark in early 2013.

Have Women Embraced The Porn Culture? | Psychology Today

A provocative new article? by Dr. Patrick Wanis charges that women may be harming themselves by embracing the culture of pornography. As journalist Charlotte Raven observed, the sex industry has successfully rebranded itself as a "chic lifestyle choice."? Professor of Communications Angela McRobbie?concurs that pornography is "no longer divorced from the heartland of advertising, branding and consumer culture, it sits quite comfortably within the mainstream of popular culture thanks also to the fashion for sleaze style and the love of irony on the part of "cool" tastemakers." Unfortunately, as? Gail Dines, professor of sociology and women's studies and chairwoman of the American Studies Department at Wheelock College?writes in her recent book "Pornland: How Porn Hijacked Our Sexuality", the goal of pornography often seems to be to depict the maximum amount of humiliation on the women they feature. It certainly is a testament to the incredible persuasive power of the media of movies, television, the internet, and music that women would?ever?consider ?endorsing such an industry.

Dr. Wanis says that as this pole dancing, full frontal fashion?becomes a socially acceptable part of our mainstream culture, it?can have?tremendous effects on girls and young women?who?are exposed to and may embrace the values of pornography: "women and the media have linked consuming porn or behaving like a porn actress with instant money, fame, power, glamour, prestige, respectability, and social acceptability."? For instance, Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian used sex? to become international phenomenons. They both became instant celebrities by making sex tapes and?then parlayed the notoriety to create successful fashion and?perfume lines and television shows?or movie roles?without having any discernable talent. The examples?of these?two dominating personalites,? as well as other porn-embracing?female celebrities such as Madonna, Kate Moss, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Kylie Minogue, aren't lost on our youth.

Professor ?Dines believes that pornography distorts "the way women and girls think about their bodies, their sexuality and their relationships."?This "distortion" can only lead to more emphasis on the specious values of physical attraction and charm, which are highly valued in porn culture,?instead of seeking romance based on shared interests, values and compatible personalities. This?overemphasis on the physical results in?unfulfilling?unions and weak, unsatisfying?marriages that don't survive the test of time. We urge American women and men to reject the mindless, empty values promoted by the media and make healthy choices.
