(AP) ? Google co-founder Sergey Brin made a splashy entrance during a San Francisco conference while CEO Larry Page recovered from an ailment that has left him unable to speak.

Page's absence from one of Google's marquee events wasn't a surprise because the Internet search leader had announced at its annual shareholders' meeting last week that he wouldn't be attending.

Without providing any specifics about what caused the problem, Google Inc. said Page lost his voice. Although Page still is well enough to carry out his CEO duties, Page isn't expected to speak during a conference call planned next month to review the company's second-quarter earnings.

Brin told reporters Wednesday that Page is fine except for his inability to speak, which started a few weeks ago.

"He just needs to rest his voice," Brin said of his long-time partner.

Brin joked that Page might be an even more effective CEO because he is taking more time to choose his words. He declined to elaborate on what caused Page to lose his voice.

Even when he can speak, Page tends to shun the spotlight. He didn't appear at Google's annual "I/O" conference for computer programmers last year either. Google held last year's event less than two months after Page replaced his longtime mentor, Eric Schmidt, as CEO.

Brin, who started Google with Page in 1998, has never been a wallflower. He wowed a standing room-only crowd of about 6,000 people Wednesday when he jogged on stage to interrupt a presentation about a new feature on Google Plus, the company's alternative to Facebook's social network.

After apologizing for the disruption, Brin said he had a time-sensitive matter to share with the audience.

Moments later, he was immersed in a video chat with a skydiver that Google hired to jump out of a blimp above San Francisco to demonstrate the futuristic, Internet-connected glasses. The crowd was able to watch what it was like to parachute into downtown San Francisco through the skydiver, who was wearing a pair of the glasses, which Google has been developing for more than two years.

Most of the opening keynote at Google's three-day conference was conducted by lower-level executives.

AG emails: Get to the bottom of Fast and Furious

(AP) ? "We need answers on this. Not defensive BS. Real answers."

In email exchanges with subordinates in February and March 2011, Attorney General Eric Holder and the department's second-highest official expressed growing concern that something might have gone wrong in a federal gun-smuggling probe called Operation Fast and Furious.

Two of Holder's emails and one by Deputy Attorney General James Cole were among documents the Justice Department showed Tuesday to Republican and Democratic staffers of the House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee in an effort to ward off a criminal contempt vote against the attorney general.

The full contents of the emails were described to The Associated Press by two people who have seen them. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about them publicly.

For the past year and a half, some Republicans have promoted the idea that Holder and other top-level officials at the Justice Department knew federal agents in Operation Fast and Furious had engaged in a risky tactic known as "gun-walking."

Two of Holder's emails and one from Cole appear to show that they hadn't known about gun-walking but were determined to find out whether the allegations were true.

When relying on the technique of gun-walking, federal agents tried to track suspected illicit gun-buyers instead of arresting them. The hope was that the low-level "straw" purchasers would lead law enforcement to major arms-traffickers, enabling the agents to dismantle networks that had put tens of thousands of guns into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. In Operation Fast and Furious, the tracking effort failed. The operation identified over 2,000 illicitly purchased weapons. Some 1,400 of them have yet to be recovered.

The emails by Holder and Cole followed a hurried assurance by the Justice Department on Feb. 4, 2011, to Sen. Chuck Grassley, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. No such tactic was used, the Justice Department said in a letter to Grassley. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives "makes every effort to interdict weapons that have been purchased illegally and prevent their transportation to Mexico," the letter added. The letter was based on incorrect assurances supplied to the Justice Department by the U.S. Attorney's office in Phoenix and by ATF officials. The department withdrew the Feb. 4 letter on Dec. 2, 2011, after documenting what had taken place not only in Operation Fast and Furious, but in three other gun-walking operations going back to 2006.

At the Justice Department on Thursday, spokeswoman Nanda Chitre declined to comment about the e-mails.

After the Feb. 4 letter to Grassley, news stories appeared containing allegations of gun-walking. The Justice Department was awash in conflicting opinions over whether the media accounts were correct.

CBS News ran a story on Feb. 23, 2011. On March 3, CBS followed up, and the nonprofit Center for Public Integrity weighed in with its own online account.

On Feb. 23, aides passed along to the attorney general the CBS story alleging gun-walking, and the attorney general shot back, "We need answers on this. Not defensive BS. Real answers."

Five days later, Holder asked the Justice Department's inspector general to investigate.

On March 3, Cole, the No. 2 official at the Justice Department, emailed his staff: "We obviously need to get to the bottom of this."

Holder was skeptical of any assurances.

"I hope the AG understands that we did not allow guns to walk," an official at the ATF's Washington headquarters said on March 10 in an email that Holder's aides forwarded to the attorney general.

In a response, Holder wrote, "Do they really, really know" that there was no gun-walking?

A day earlier, at Holder's instruction, the Justice Department had sent out a directive to the field reinforcing a longtime Justice Department policy against gun-walking. The directive said that agents must not allow guns to cross the border into Mexico.

Hewitt loses, Australian men blanked at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? Australian men once dominated Wimbledon. This year they failed to win a match.

Aussies went 0 for 4, including a loss Tuesday by 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt. That means no Australian man in the second round, the first time that has happened since 1938.

During a 12-year span from 1960 to 1971, Australians won the Wimbledon men's title 10 times. But in recent years they've experienced a decline similar to the United States, with South Americans, Eastern Europeans and Asians increasingly competitive as tennis becomes more global.

Hewitt's 14th Wimbledon appearance was brief. He needed a wild card to enter the tournament and lost to No. 5-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (5) 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Aussies Bernard Tomic and Matthew Ebden also lost Tuesday.

"The boys didn't have the best day," Hewitt said.

Tomic, who reached the quarterfinals last year as an 18-year-old qualifier, lost to Belgian wild card David Goffin. Ebden was beaten by Benoit Paire. Another Australian, Marinko Matosevic, lost to Xavier Malisse on Monday.

Hewitt said tough draws were partly to blame for the shutout.

"The three guys that played today, I know we could have beat a lot of guys that are still going in the tournament," he said. "That's just how it falls."

Hewitt drew an especially difficult opening opponent. The loss was his first in the first round at Wimbledon since 2003. Despite losing in straight sets, he found little fault with his performance.

"I didn't do a lot wrong really," he said. "Probably as good as I could have done today, really."

Hewitt's victory at Wimbledon was the most recent major title by an Australian man. Now 31, he has been plagued lately by injuries, most recently a foot ailment that required surgery in March 2011. He's just 4-6 in Grand Slam matches since August 2010, and the former No. 1 is ranked 202nd.

He plans to be back at Wimbledon next month playing as a wild card in the Olympics, and hopes to return to Wimbledon in 2013.

"At the moment I've been focusing on getting back this year, doing everything right with my foot and rehab to get back to here," Hewitt said. "I'm proud of myself, of what I've been able to do, all the hard work it has taken to get here. I'd like to be back here, absolutely, but we'll have to wait and see."

The winner of 555 matches in his career, Hewitt is only lately becoming accustomed to early exits at tournaments. He's still not used to the experience.

"It's like missing the cut at any golf tournament," Hewitt said. "I can only go out there and do what I could do out there today. I didn't get handed the best draw. I'm sure there are a lot of guys in the tournament that I probably could have got through today."

Hewitt was overpowered by Tsonga, a big hitter who beat six-time champion Roger Federer last year to reach the semifinals. Tsonga totaled 61 winners to 12 for Hewitt.

Petra Kvitova opened her bid for a second successive Wimbledon title by overcoming a shaky start to beat Akgul Amanmuradova 6-4, 6-4. Kvitova fell behind 4-1, then swept seven consecutive games to take charge.

"I was nervous," she said. "It was first time for me to be as the defending champion of a Grand Slam. You know, it was huge honor to come to Centre Court. Of course, I would like to make everyone happy, but it's not that easy. It was lot of firsts for me today, but I'm happy that I stayed calm inside and did not panic on the important points."

No. 2-seeded Victoria Azarenka, the Australian Open champion, beat Irina Falconi 6-1, 6-4, and four-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2, 6-4 on the same court where older sister Venus upset a day earlier.

In men's play on Centre Court, two-time champion Rafael Nadal lost the first four games but rebounded to beat fellow left-hander Thomaz Bellucci 7-6 (0), 6-2, 6-3.

"I'm very happy to be back on the best court in the world and winning," Nadal said. "It's fantastic for me, but I have to improve a lot for the next round."

Twelve matches were suspended because of rain. Three-time finalist Andy Roddick led Jamie Baker 7-6 (1), 4-2 when their match was halted. Sara Errani, runner-up this month at the French Open, held match point in the second set against American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe when play stopped.

Egypt's new president starts building government

CAIRO (Reuters) - Mohamed Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected president whose powers have already been curbed by the army, began work on a coalition on Monday after touring his new palace, once home of Hosni Mubarak who banned his movement for three decades.

Declared winner on Sunday a week after a tumultuous run-off vote that pitted him against a former air force chief, the Islamist faces the challenge of meeting sky-high expectations in a nation tired of turmoil while the economy is on the ropes.

But his campaign pledge to complete the revolution that toppled Mubarak last year but left the pillars of his rule intact will come up against the entrenched interests of the generals who are in charge of the transition to democracy.

Shortly before the historic presidential vote, a newly elected Islamist-led parliament was dissolved by the army based on a court order, and the generals issued a decree setting limits on the president's remit, which cuts into Mursi's powers to act but exposes him to blame for any failures.

Critics at home and in the West called it a "soft coup".

One pressing concern - on which many Egyptians are likely to judge his performance - will to be to revive the economy of the world's most populous Arab nation.

Monday's stock market rally, at least partly fuelled by relief that the vote and result passed off without violence, may encourage the new president, but he still has to prove to wary longer-term investors that Egypt is on the road to recovery.

Egyptian newspapers welcomed Mursi's win over Ahmed Shafik, Mubarak's last prime minister, as a victory for the people, although many more liberal-minded Egyptians worry his conservative group will slowly whittle away at social freedoms.

Further afield, his win has had an immediate impact beyond Egypt's borders, inspiring Islamists who have risen up against autocrats across the Middle East and swept to power in North Africa. Israel worries its 1979 peace deal with Egypt, never warm, will cool further.

Palestinians in Gaza, however, are delighted.

Iran saw his election as an "Islamic awakening" - though Tehran and the Muslim Brotherhood follow different, often opposing forms of the faith. Iran's Fars news agency published an interview in which Mursi called for restoring full ties between Cairo and Tehran to build strategic "balance". A Mursi aide said he gave the interview 10 days ago.

DRAMATIC REVERSAL OF FORTUNES

A security official said Mursi, 60, and his wife took a tour of their new home, once Mubarak's main residence - a dramatic change of fortunes full of symbolism for a former political prisoner whose group was pursued remorselessly during Mubarak's 30-year rule.

An aide said Mursi then went to the Defence Ministry for talks with the head of the ruling military council's Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and the army-appointed Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri. They discussed forming a new government at the meetings, which Egyptians will see as a sign that real power still lies with the army.

As president, Mursi can appoint the cabinet. His aides say he has already reached out to politicians from outside the Brotherhood such as reformist Mohamed ElBaradei, who has yet to publicly respond. But legislative powers remain with the army while the parliament is dissolved, restricting his power to act.

Egypt's army-appointed government, led by al-Ganzouri who also served in the 1990s as prime minister under Mubarak, submitted its resignation on Monday but was asked to stay on temporarily until Mursi, who has yet to take the oath of office, put a team together, Information Minister Ahmed Anis said

"The revolution reaches the republican palace," wrote Al-Shorouk newspaper. Another, Al-Akhbar, quoted from Mursi's victory speech: "I am a servant of the people and an employee of the citizens".

It is a sentiment widely spoken: the sense that at last, perhaps, Egyptians have a leader who can be "fired".

Celebrations in Cairo's Tahrir Square - theatre of the revolution that overthrew Mubarak - extended through the night. Some Brotherhood followers were still celebrating, surprised by their victory that broke a six-decade tradition of presidents plucked from the military.

"STRENGTH TO NEGOTIATE"

"It was a little surprising that the army acknowledged his win," said 40-year-old teacher Adel Mohamed who was in the square when the result was declared after a nervous week's wait since the vote. "The pressure from the street, from the revolution, will give Mursi strength to negotiate."

From Syria's opposition who are seeking the downfall of President Bashar al-Assad came word that Cairo was again a "source of hope" for a people "facing a repressive war of annihilation".

But millions of Egyptians, and the Western powers, looked on with unease at the prospect of the long-suppressed Brotherhood making good on its dream of an Islamic state.

Israel has been particularly nervous, urging its neighbour to respect their peace deal. It worries that the Brotherhood's win will embolden Palestinian Islamists opposed to Israel.

"Darkness in Egypt," headlined Israeli paper Yedioth Ahronoth. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he "respected" the result and said he saw future cooperation with the new administration.

An aide to Mursi said during Mursi's campaign that he would delegate meetings with Israeli officials to his foreign minister, unlike Mubarak who often met top Israelis. Mubarak went to Israel only once, for the funeral of assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

"Mursi's victory is most likely to strengthen the hand of Hamas in its fight against Israel because it will give it a moral boost," said political scientist Mustapha al-Sayyed.

But the army, determined not to see its $1.3 billion in U.S. military aid a year jeopardised, will probably ensure ties are not undermined even if the relationship sours, diplomats say.

Pledging to uphold international treaties, in a gesture to Israel, Mursi said in his first televised address as president-elect that he would work with others to see the democratic revolution through.

"There is no room now for the language of confrontation," he said, a message addressed not just to the army but to the young, urban revolutionaries who launched last year's uprising only to see the Brotherhood dominate the political scene afterwards.

One of the most influential revolutionary youth groups greeted Mursi's win as a victory for last year's uprising.

"We have defeated the candidate of Mubarak's military state, the candidate of the corrupt 'deep state' that we are fed up with," said the April 6 Youth movement.

"Starting today we will work as one body for Egypt."

COMPROMISING WITH THE MILITARY

Western powers congratulated Mursi, who received a phone call from U.S. President Barack Obama, offering help.

The White House said in a statement: "The president underscored that the United States will continue to support Egypt's transition to democracy and stand by the Egyptian people as they fulfil the promise of their revolution."

Mursi may have little choice but to compromise with the army, and Brotherhood sources said a package of agreements discussed with generals last week could soon be announced.

The Brotherhood's political gains, first winning the biggest bloc in parliament and then running for president, had rattled the military. With the help of a Mubarak-era judiciary, the military council dissolved parliament on the eve of the presidential vote, then gave itself the legislative power.

Senior Brotherhood officials say they have been negotiating in the past week to change some of that, though both sides deny any haggling over the result of the presidential vote itself.

"President Mursi and his team have been in talks with the military council to bring back the democratically elected parliament and other issues," Essam Haddad, a senior Brotherhood official, told Reuters on Monday.

Brotherhood sources told Reuters they hoped the army might allow a partial recall of parliament and other concessions in return for Mursi exercising his powers to name a government and presidential administration in ways the army approves of - notably by extending appointments across the political spectrum.

Military officials have confirmed discussions in the past few days but had no immediate comment on the latest talks.

Brotherhood officials have said they will press on with street protests to pressure the army but this, along with a number of other contentious issues including to whom and where Mursi swears his oath of office, could be settled soon.

The army wants Mursi sworn in on June 30, meeting a deadline it set itself for handing over Egypt to "civilian rule" - although the military's influence will go on long beyond that.

Make A Three-Minute Call, Help Develop A Test For Parkinson?s Based On Voice Recognition

Parkinsons Voice InitiativeAt TEDx Edinburgh today, the BBC reports, mathematician Max Little has launched a new project that uses a speaker's voice to help diagnose Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's, a devastating progressive neurological disease that develops very gradually and often starts with a very slight tremor in one hand, is notoriously hard to diagnose as there are currently no blood tests that can help doctors test for the disease. The human voice however, says Little, is affected as much by Parkinson's as limb movement and his algorithms can currently detect the symptoms of the disease with 86% accuracy. Little recently became a TED Fellow and is now working to improve the accuracy of his algorithms. He hopes to make his tools available to doctors within the next two years. If you have three minutes, you can even help him in his mission by making a simple call to an automated system that will ask you to answer a few questions and repeat a few sentences. Besides in the U.S. (1-857-284-8035), the team is also offering call-in numbers in Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Canada and the UK.

Zynga.com to show Facebook ads

NEW YORK (AP) ? Zynga is starting to show ads from Facebook on Zynga.com, its stand-alone website that lets people play its online games away from Facebook.

Since players use their Facebook accounts to log in to Zynga.com, the ads will be targeted to them based the information that they already share on Facebook.

Facebook says advertisers won't have any new criteria to target people. So logging in to Zynga.com would probably get users the same ads they already see on Facebook.

The move is likely the first step in the creation of an advertising network for Facebook that allows it to show ads on websites beyond Facebook.com. This is something other companies, such as Amazon.com Inc.'s Zappos.com, already do.

The companies are not disclosing financial details of the deal.

Hawthorne Food and Drink, a more upscale Fabarnak, to hit ...

Coming to Richmond and Church in late August or early September is Hawthorne Food and Drink, the brainchild of former?Fabarnak executive chef Eric Wood. Much like Fabarnak, Hawthorne will emphasize the surrounding community: the menu will reflect local flavours found within the diverse neighbourhoods in and around Toronto, and the restaurant will adopt similar practices to the acclaimed hiring procedures at Fabarnak (employing and training those early in their careers in the food industry). Located in the 60 Richmond Street East Housing Co-op building, the restaurant is associated with?Unite Here Local 75 and local hotel management,?in a setup a little like that of the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas. ?The fact that we are affiliated with the union really helps us?get great staff,? Wood told us, ?and we contribute by giving new skills and a new edge?to the talent pool.?

Beyond the restaurant?s social commitment, Wood assures us that ?the food and atmosphere will blow people away.??Lovers of Fabarnak?s Square Peg bento box should look out for Hawthorne?s own version of the popular dish, with items sampling cuisine from around the world. The fully licensed 46-seat restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and will boast a takeout counter as well. With both Hawthorne and Top Chef Canada winner Carl Heinrich?s restaurant set to open on Richmond this summer, Wood predicts big things for food in the area. Oh, and as for the name? It?s a riff on the edible flower, with some literary flavour to class things up.

Brotherhood vs. military on Parliament

CAIRO, June 19 (UPI) -- Muslim Brotherhood lawmakers vowed to show up at Egypt's military-protected Parliament Tuesday in defiance of a court ruling dissolving the legislature.

The brotherhood said Egypt's Supreme Court -- 18 judges, appointed mostly during the Mubarak regime -- had no authority to dissolve the Parliament after negating Egypt's complex parliamentary elections, and the brotherhood said the military had no authority to prohibit duly elected members of Parliament from entering the building.

The court ruled the law governing the elections contained illegal provisions as well as legal provisions that were not followed.

That ruling came a day after the military-appointed Justice Minister declared martial law, giving the military sweeping powers to enforce law and order, and three days before the military issued a decree amending Egypt's Constitution to give the country's top generals many executive powers previously reserved for the president.

The ruling generals -- who for months had promised to cede authority to a new civilian government by the end of this month -- issued the decree Sunday, 20 minutes after polls closed in the presidential vote.

In Washington, Pentagon spokesman George Little said, "We're deeply concerned about new amendments to the constitution declaration, including the timing of their announcements as polls were closing for the presidential election."

The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party said it would convene Parliament anyway Tuesday -- a day previously scheduled for a session -- and called on Egyptians to take to the streets to challenge the military's recent moves to consolidate power.

Freedom and Justice Party Secretary-General Saad el-Katatni, speaker of the Parliament's lower chamber, said Parliament would convene at Tahrir Square if the armed soldiers and other security forces surrounding the Parliament building -- who have been ordered to keep all lawmakers from entering -- refused to let the members of Parliament go in, the British newspaper The Guardian reported.

Freedom and Justice Party presidential candidate Mohamed Morsi and rival ex-Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, the ruling military's favored candidate, both claimed victory in the weekend vote.

Shafiq's campaign insisted Shafiq -- a former air force general who Hosni Mubarak appointed as prime minister 12 days before stepping down as president in the face of massive protests last year -- was the true winner.

It alleged the brotherhood had "terrorized" voters, but offered no evidence to support the allegation.

The ballots were counted in front of TV cameras and party observers in polling places nationwide to prevent fraud. Independent observers concluded Morsi won by about 4 percentage points, or about a million votes.

State-run and unofficial media reported Morsi had a decisive lead, with 99 percent of the vote counted.

The military's Presidential Election Commission said official results would likely be released by the end of the week.

As for the new martial law, the dissolving of Parliament and the constitutional decree, "Everyone is blowing this out of proportion," Maj. Gen. Mohamed el-Assar, a member of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, said in a news conference Monday.

"No one will return Egypt to the past, no matter who wins the presidency," he said.

Egypt's incoming president, Assar said, will still retain power to appoint ministers and veto legislation, despite the legislative authority the military has assumed.

"We want a little more trust in us," he said. "Stop the criticisms that we are a state within a state. Please. Stop."

"Trust the armed forces," Assar and Gen. Mandouh Shahin said several times during the news conference, The New York Times reported.

"We don't want power," both said repeatedly, citing the presidential election as proof.

Despite seizing Parliament, they promised a big celebration at the end of the month to mark their formal handover to the new president -- a handover The Guardian said many Egyptians now viewed as largely meaningless.

The generals said they regretted shutting down Parliament, calling its formation one of their proudest achievements.

But they said they were forced to close it down because of the court's ruling.

Your Sister?s Sister

Mark Duplass (who stars in three movies coming out this summer; his own fifth feature, The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, co-directed with his brother Jay, opens in July) makes for a refreshing romantic hero. Both here and in Safety Not Guaranteed, he plays men who genuinely seem to enjoy the company of women, and who, for all their introspection and neuroses, are unplagued by the familiar man-cave anxieties of too many onscreen bros. As the eager-to-please Iris, Emily Blunt is as luminous and charming as ever, though her character never emerges into sharp relief the way the other two principals do. We never hear much, if anything, about Iris? own grief for her dead boyfriend Tom, and given what we learn about Hannah in the last third of the movie, Iris starts to seem less like a devoted younger sibling than a self-deluding doormat.

(AP) ? A jockstrap pulled over his head in a high school locker room more than 50 years ago provoked a 73-year-old South Dakota man to fatally shoot his long-ago classmate, a prosecutor said Friday.

Carl Ericsson of Watertown, who last month pleaded guilty but mentally ill to second-degree murder, was sentenced to life in prison Friday. Ericsson was charged in the Jan. 31 killing of retired Madison High School teacher and track coach Norman Johnson, who was shot twice in the face as he answered his front door.

Kenneth Meyer, the Lake County state's attorney, said Ericsson has indicated that the decades-old locker room incident led to the shooting. Johnson was a high school sports star and Ericsson was a student manager.

Beth Ribstein, Johnson's daughter, said her dad hadn't spoken to Ericsson for years and it was puzzling that he held onto the grudge for so long.

"It was just goofing off in a locker room," Ribstein, 50, said Friday after the sentencing.

Ericsson "hasn't been right for many years," Ribstein said, adding that he was envious of her father's success and standing in the community.

"He was just jealous of Dad his whole life," she said.

Ericsson had pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge in February and requested a jury trial. But Meyer and defense attorney Scott Bratland announced May 1 that a deal had been reached. The first-degree murder charge could have carried the death penalty if prosecutors had chosen to pursue it.

At his arraignment hearing last month, Ericsson told Judge Vince Foley that he rang the doorbell at Johnson's house then asked his old classmate to verify his identity before shooting him with a .45-caliber pistol.

Both Ribstein and Johnson's older daughter, Terri Wiblemo, read statements during the sentencing hearing.

Wiblemo took the witness stand and immediately stared into Ericsson's eyes, opening with, "I'm speaking to you, Carl." She noted that Sunday is Father's Day, and her dad each year looked forward to enjoying his favorite meal of fried chicken, potato salad and rhubarb pie.

"We miss my dad very much," said Wiblemo, 52.

After high school, Johnson played football for Augustana College in Sioux Falls and earned a bachelor's degree in education from General Beadle State Teachers College. He later received a master's degree from South Dakota State University and returned to Madison High to teach and coach for more than 30 years.

Wiblemo told Ericsson that her dad impacted so many people's lives in a positive way.

"But I don't know that you would understand that kind of goodness," she said.

Ribstein told Ericsson that more than 600 people attended her Johnson's funeral ? including a member of Ericsson's family ? and that her father was well-liked and respected by all.

"I can't blame you for being jealous of Dad," she said.

Ribstein told Ericsson how much Johnson loved his daughters, his grandchildren and his pets, and noted that Ericsson, too, was a dog owner.

"The night you shot him, his dog didn't want to leave his side," she said.

Ericsson, in brief comments made after Johnson's daughters spoke, said he would like to tell Johnson's widow, Barb, that he was very sorry for what he had done.

"I just wish I could turn the calendar back," he said.

Ericsson didn't address the grudge on Friday. At his May arraignment, Ericsson told the judge: "I guess it was from something that happened over 50 years ago. It was apparently in my subconscious."

To support Ericsson's May plea, Bratland had submitted an affidavit from psychiatrist Robert Giebink that said Ericsson has a long history of anxiety problems and suffers from "severe and recurrent depression that is, for the most part, treatment resistant."

Giebink said Ericsson was significantly depressed and suicidal when they first met in January.

"Thinking was irrational. Judgment was impaired," Giebink wrote. "He made the comment that he wished each night that he would not wake up in the morning."

Spend Home Sale Profit On Mortgage Or 529? | Bankrate.com

mortgage

Don TaylorDear Dr. Don,
After paying off my existing home, I recently purchased a new home. I put 20 percent down on my new home and got a 4 percent fixed-rate mortgage on $250,000. I expect to get about $175,000 when I sell my existing home. I am contemplating putting $78,000 into Section 529 college savings plans for my three children, ages 12, 8, and 2, and maybe putting the balance into mutual funds in my joint investment account. Should I fund their 529 accounts or pay down my mortgage?
-- Doug Diplomas

Dear Doug,
My rule of thumb is that you pay down the mortgage when the effective rate on the mortgage is greater than the expected after-tax rate of return on your investments. You have a great rate on that new mortgage. If you can fully utilize the mortgage interest deduction on your taxes (which simply means that the deduction isn't just replacing the standard deduction when you itemize expenses on your income tax return), then your effective rate on your mortgage is somewhere between 2.6 percent and 3.4 percent, depending on your marginal federal income tax bracket and your state income tax rate. That's pretty cheap money. You can use Bankrate's mortgage tax deduction calculator to come up with a more precise estimate.

There are two main types of Section 529 college savings plans: prepaid tuition plans and tax-advantaged investment accounts. You should always consider your home state's plans first, especially if contributions to a plan only generate a state income tax deduction if you contribute to your home state's plan. If your state offers a prepaid tuition plan that is guaranteed by the state and grows at a rate equal to college cost inflation, it's likely that this is a better choice than prepaying the mortgage, especially for the younger children.

Whether a Section 529 investment account or your own investment account's after-tax earnings can beat the effective rate on your mortgage depends on the account fees and expenses and how the monies are invested. With the bar set this low, however, you should be able to earn more after-tax on your investments than you pay after-tax on your mortgage. It won't work if you're ultraconservative in your investments, but a well-diversified portfolio of financial securities should be able to do better than a mortgage prepayment strategy.
