"People think it's a couple of years, but I just won a couple months ago," he said of the Chevron World Challenge, where he birdied his last two holes for a one-shot win over Zach Johnson against an 18-man field. "I look at that as a win. And I'm just kind of off to my first start of the year here in the States, and I made some good improvement this week."

Then again, that win at Sherwood was inches away from being different. Woods had control of the final round early, let it get away, and could only watch as Johnson had an 18-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that looked all the way until it wasn't. That would have given him a two-shot lead. Instead, Woods knocked in his 15-footer to tie, then won with a 6-foot putt on the end.

If Johnson's putt goes in, the hole undoubtedly shrinks for Woods' birdie attempt.

That's how it looked for him Sunday at Pebble Beach during the opening seven-hole stretch, fertile ground for comebacks. His 5-foot birdie on the second hole missed the cup by 2 inches, which, on the PGA Tour level, is close to a mile. He was grinding to match Mickelson's birdie on the fifth, and he three-putted from 18 feet on the seventh, missing his par putt from inside 3 feet.

Woods near the lead on Sunday used to bring a sense of inevitability. Now he is about unpredictability. He has said he is at peace with himself, and he looks calm and confident while working his way into contention. Sunday is hard work. There is a feeling watching him that Woods is trying too hard, that every putt means too much.

Perhaps that will change.

It used to be that each win gave him even more confidence. Now, one has to wonder if each Sunday brings more doubt.

Understanding Comparative Philosophy

As a branch or subfield of philosophy, comparative philosophy is quite young and is still in its early stage of development. Its aim is to work on problems and compare various philosophies by taking into account all sources regardless of culture, language or philosophical stream. It differs from area studies philosophy in that area studies philosophy focuses its study on a single region or area. For instance, it may compare the various forms of Confucianism within China or compare Chinese Philosophy with Indian Philosophy. Comparative philosophy differs in that it goes beyond the boundaries of culture and language as it seeks to find a basis for comparing philosophical traditions.

In this sense, comparative philosophy can be regarded as an extension of world philosophy because world philosophy brings together philosophical writings and traditions that exist among all human cultures with the end in view of coming up with a unified global stand. It differs from comparative philosophy, however, in that the latter does not really strive to become a world philosophy but only to gain a better understanding of the differences in beliefs of one culture with another from a different region.

The Hurdles of Comparative Philosophy

Certain problems stand in the way of comparative philosophy that prevents it from totally achieving its goals. First of this is descriptive chauvinism or the tendency of philosophers to regard his own tradition as the only correct tradition and other traditions that differ from his as erroneous or false.

Another is skepticism or the tendency to narrate or discuss various traditions and attitudes of other philosophers while suspending belief or judgment of their adequacy and veracity.

Incommensurability is another obstacle of comparative philosophy that refers to the extreme diversity of traditions that may make it impossible to reach a common ground on which to base comparisons. Perennialism or the failure to recognize that traditions and beliefs evolve and thus the basis for a dialogue today may change tomorrow is another major obstacle that comparative philosophy needs to overcome.

And finally there?s the lack of acceptance by other philosophers of comparative philosophy itself as a subfield of philosophy. There are those that contend that there is no such thing as comparative philosophy because all philosophical work is comparative. When you try and find the common ground among different versions of one religion, you are actually comparing them. When you study the principles that one philosopher espouses and test these principles with that of another, you are comparing them.

Truth be told, the strong tendency for incommensurability that results from the excessively diverse scope of subjects embraced by comparative philosophy results in the failure to create a synthesis of traditions. What comparative philosophy creates is not a new belief or understanding but a new method or process by which one can try to understand.

New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman may only be doing what he thinks is right for his state, but he could inadvertently slow the housing recovery around the country thanks to his lawsuit against three major lenders and the Mortgage Electronic Registration System (MERS) and its owner, Merscorp.? Although Schneiderman?s lawsuit is seeking only to stop banks that rely on MERS from filing foreclosures in New York State, the outcome could affect the more than 70 million mortgage loans registered in MERS around the country . Schneiderman was removed from the executive committee of attorney generals that was working on negotiating a nationwide foreclosure settlement with U.S. banks back in August 2011 because lead attorney general Tom Miller believed that he was working to ?undermine? the efforts of the lenders and attorneys general to come to terms . Since that time multiple other attorneys general, including Catherine Masto of Nevada, Marth Coakley of Massachusetts, and Kamela Harris of California have threatened and hinted that they might also walk away from the table if their own investigations were not allowed to continue as part of the settlement.

Rumors yesterday about the settlement, which had a deadline of February 6, 2012, included speculation that Coakley and Masto would have to abandon suits against Bank of America and other lenders. Attorney general Beau Biden of Delaware has been described as ?definitely out? , while Harris said as late as noon yesterday that ?the door remains open? for California to participate . Harris walked away from the table last year and called the proposed $25 billion settlement currently up for debate ?inadequate? as recently as two weeks ago. The Obama administration, also in the mix, was dealing with California officials directly for most of Monday in an attempt to bring the state back into the fold and get Harris? name on the deal.

Update:? Catherine Masto (NV) announced yesterday that she would not make a decision about joining the nationwide settlement before the deadline for joining because she was ?still reviewing the terms.?

Pressing Questions: The Atlanta Braves

We don't have an exact date on the photo above, but we know it wasn't taken in September of last year. The 2011 Braves put together a monumental choke down the stretch, but the story was partially obscured by the rumbling in the AL East (mmm, that's tasty chicken).

Here's the math of it all: Atlanta had an 8.5-game lead in the NL Wild Card standings into the final month, sitting pretty at 80-55. And that's when the wave broke. The Braves sputtered to a 9-18 finish, including five straight losses to end the year. A blown save on the final day of the season enabled the Cardinals to sneak into the playoffs over the Braves, and you probably remember what happened after that.

The Atlanta front office didn't overreact to the team's collapse. Actually, the front office didn't react at all. There haven't been any significant trades here, no notable signings, nothing buzzy to talk about. The Braves are simply hoping that their young players will continue to improve and some of last year's bums will get it together this time around. The payroll is almost identical to 2011's payroll.

Can the Braves stay competitive in a tricky NL East, where the Phillies remain loaded and the Marlins and Nationals have made significant upgrades? At the end of the day, it probably comes down to player health and youngster improvements. The Braves could have a terrific pitching staff if everyone stays hale (and the depth is ridiculous), but there are plenty of questions about the offense.

Jason Heyward was a hero in 2010 and a near-zero in 2011. Now what?

I suspect Heyward has a chance to become such a trendy sleeper that all the value is eventually sucked out, but you should put him on your target list anyway. I don't care about all those numbers heading in the wrong direction last year: walk rate dropped, line drives disappeared, OBP and power cratered, and his surface stats collapsed ? we all know that. But there's a logical reason why the super sophomore crash-landed.

Heyward had an early shoulder injury that affected him all season; by the middle of the summer, his mechanics were all messed up and he couldn't get out of his own way. And it seems like former batting coach Larry Parrish did more harm than good when it came to working with Heyward. (To borrow from thoroughbred handicapping parlance, this feels like a horse who had a bad trip, a valid excuse for a poor performance. Sometimes you just throw the last race out. Back me up, Andy Beyer.)

Greg Walker is the new batting coach in Atlanta (with Scott Fletcher assisting), and while he's not coming off a happy season himself ? he was with the White Sox last year, draw your own conclusions ? he does bring a more modern approach to the task at hand. Heyward has also dropped 21 pounds, and while the "best shape of his life" meme gets a lot of laughs on the Internet, it never bothers me to hear that someone's trimmed down.

Here's what Chipper Jones had to say on Heyward 3.0, talking to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

"To answer your question, weight is not an issue with [Heyward]," Jones said. "The ball is jumping off the bat now close to what it was in spring training 2010. He's got some more in there; he's still making some adjustments and it's a slow process. As Tiger Woods will tell you, you go through a swing change, it takes some time. But he's starting to get it and he's starting to get results."

It's refreshing to see Jones on board, given that he was on Heyward's case at times last year, almost daring the kid to play through the shoulder problems. Unfortunately for us, a lot of experts are jumping on the Heyward train as well. His ADP is 85.6 in early Mock Draft Central industry play (that makes him the No. 24 outfielder), while he's at 107.3 in standard mocks (the No. 31 outfielder). The first price gives me cause for pause, but the second one looks like a bargain.

How soon is now for Julio Teheran? What becomes of the jumbled rotation?

Although Teheran might be the best pitching prospect in the National League and he's coming off a super year at Triple-A (2.55 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 2.54 K/BB, 15-3 record), he just turned 21 last month and the Braves don't have an automatic rotation spot for him. By default, he might have to start the year getting more Triple-A seasoning, work he may or may not need. Even if he does make the Braves to open the year, you have to figure the inning ceiling will be fairly low.

The Braves are looking strong at the top, in theory, with established righties Tommy Hanson and Tim Hudson. Brandon Beachy isn't going anywhere after last year's splashy debut. Jair Jurrjens was shopped during the winter but no one was biting; thus, he comes back for another year on Peachtree Street.

Two more kids who got their cleats wet last year (Mike Minor, a 24-year-old lefty, and Randall Delgado, a 21-year old righty) will challenge for rotation spots and could push their way into the mixed-league pickup discussion. Minor struck out 77 in 82.2 Atlanta innings last year and was the ninth overall pick in the 2009 draft. I might push an extra buck or two on him in an NL-only pool.

The health status of the veterans might determine who makes the team out of camp and who doesn't. Hanson's dealing with a sore shoulder and has been babied all winter (he recently began throwing again), Hudson has a bad back (there's been talk of him not pitching until May), and Jurrjens is coming off knee problems. Please have your copay ready.

Rookie Tyler Pastornicky takes over at shortstop: any roto juice here?

I wouldn't bother in a mixer; make Pastornicky force his way onto your roster. He's sound enough defensively to hold the job right out of the chute ? even with credible veteran Jack Wilson signed as insurance ? but Pastornicky's minor-league numbers were pedestrian before last year's growth season, and he'll probably bat eighth to open the year. Beware the potential speedster who's saddled with a bad lineup slot in the National League: teams don't run in front of the pitcher. I'm figuring Pastornicky will tread around .260, hit around five homers, and maybe steal 12-15 bases ? and there's very little upside past that.

Chipper Jones didn't retire? Martin Prado didn't get traded?

We told you up front, this was a stand-pat team. Other than a salary dump of Derek Lowe and the dismissal of Alex Gonzalez, there were no major changes.

Prado looked lost in left field last year and the Braves were eager for a swap after the season, but no one whispered the magic words to GM Frank Wren. Alrighty, then. It's a shame Prado no longer carries 2B eligibility and he's a carnival on the bases (13-for-28 for his career), but we're still talking about a career .293 hitter who has 39 homers over three years. There's some bounce-back potential here, sneaky sleeper value in deeper groups. He's currently the No. 191 player off the mock-draft board, and can be used at third and in the outfield.

Jones carries a laundry list of physical problems at this stage of his career ? just about every part of his lower body has bothered him at some point over the last 2-3 years ? and he hasn't seen 500 at-bats since 2007. If the Braves can get another .275 year out of him with 18 homers over 126 games, they'd probably sign up for it right now. If you wind up rostering Jones, you need your Plan B ahead of time: a DL stint will be coming at some point. It's part of the investment here.

What a gyp ? you didn't talk about my favorite player. What gives?

Hey, we're not going to talk about the entire 25-man roster with these things. Some stories have to wait for another day, another blog, another forum. But before we hit the exit, we'll give you a couple of quick hitters. ? Freddie Freeman went the other way from Heyward in the offseason: he bulked up, added muscle. At least that's the skinny from Atlanta. Generally I hate going near any sophomore buzz players, but I get the idea Freeman might be unheralded enough to actually be a good buy this year (I like that he improved in the second half of 2011, and wasn't overmatched against lefties). He's trading around Pick 118 right now, in the company of Billy Butler and Mark Reynolds. ? Closer Craig Kimbrel and setup ace Johnny Venters collapsed down the stretch, perhaps because of Fredi Gonzalez's heavy workload. Prior to that, they were terrific for our fake-baseball teams. Venters worked 85 games and threw 88 innings, a heavy burden, and it seemed to catch up to him in September (5.11 ERA, 1.86 WHIP, 10 walks). Kimbrel had three blown saves in September and a 4.76 ERA, but he also struck out 20 in 11.1 innings; maybe variance was his undoing, nothing past that. I doubt I'll own either pitcher this year, but it's simply a matter of timing and preference. I don't like to chase setup heroes who are coming off magical years (that's Venters), and I also want to get my saves on the cheap, which probably chases me off Kimbrel. If you want to stump for these guys in the comments, I'm all ears. ? Michael Bourn's speed cannot be denied, but I'm not spending an early-round pick on him. He's a sinkhole in the power categories, and once you take a one-trick pony like Bourn, you're locked out of any similar players later in the draft. It's not that hard to assemble a running roster; silly rabbit, high-priced specialists are for kids.

Did Leonardo da Vinci copy 'Vitruvian Man'?

Leonardo da Vinci's drawing of a male figure perfectly inscribed in a circle and square, known as the "Vitruvian Man," illustrates what he believed to be a divine connection between the human form and the universe. Beloved for its beauty and symbolic power, it is one of the most famous images in the world. However, new research suggests that the work, which dates to 1490, may be a copy of an earlier drawing by Leonardo's friend.

Another illustration of a divinely proportioned man ? the subject is Christ-like, but the setting is strikingly similar to Leonardo's ? has been discovered in a forgotten manuscript in Ferrara, Italy.

Both drawings are depictions of a passage written 1,500 years earlier by Vitruvius, an ancient Roman architect, in which he describes a man's body fitting perfectly inside a circle (the divine symbol) and inside a square (the earthly symbol). It was a geometric interpretation of the ancient belief that man is a "microcosm": a miniature embodiment of the whole universe. Leonardo and other scholars revived this vainglorious notion during the Italian Renaissance.

After decades of study, Claudio Sgarbi, an Italian architectural historian who discovered the lesser known illustration of the Vitruvian man in 1986, now believes it to be the work of Giacomo Andrea de Ferrara, a Renaissance architect, expert on Vitruvius, and close friend of Leonardo's. What's more, Sgarbi believes Giacomo Andrea probably drew his Vitruvian man first, though the two men are likely to have discussed their mutual efforts.

Sgarbi will lay out his arguments in a volume of academic papers to be published this winter, Smithsonian Magazine reports.

The key arguments are as follows: In Leonardo's writings, he mentions "Giacomo Andrea's Vitruvius" ? seemingly a direct reference to the illustrated Ferrara manuscript. Secondly, Leonardo had dinner with Giacomo Andrea in July 1490, the year in which both men are thought to have drawn their Vitruvian men. Experts believe Leonardo would have probed Giacomo Andrea's knowledge of Vitruvius when they met. And though both drawings interpret Vitruvius' words similarly, Leonardo's is perfectly executed, while Giacomo Andrea's is full of false starts and revisions, none of which would have been necessary if he had simply copied Leonardo's depiction. Other scholars find the arguments convincing.

"I find Sgarbi's argument exciting and very seductive, to say the least," said Indra McEwen, an architectural historian at Concordia University who has written extensively about the works of Vitruvius. "But [I] would opt for the view that Giacomo Andrea and Leonardo worked in tandem, rather than Leonardo basing his drawing on Andrea's."

Rather than competitors, the two Renaissance men were colleagues working together to bring a beautiful, ancient idea back to life.

"Whose was the 'original' drawing is a non-question as far as I'm concerned. ?Much as it is a preoccupation of our own time, I don't think it would have been an issue in Leonardo's day," McEwen told Life's Little Mysteries.

Patrice Le Floch-Prigent, an anatomist at the University of Versailles in France who has analyzed the anatomical correctness of Leonardo's famous work, noted that, for both drawings, "the source is Vitruvius."

Furthermore, regardless of their chronology, Leonardo's work is an improvement on Giacomo Andrea's, McEwen said: "Leonardo is by far the superior draftsman, with a far superior understanding of anatomy."

Leonardo's is also more faithful to the text, she explained.

"Nowhere does Vitruvius say that the man is positioned inside the circle and the square at the same time. 'A man lying flat on his back, can be circumscribed by a circle if his hands and feet are outstretched,' writes Vitruvius. Similarly, his height is equal to his arm span, 'just as in areas that have been squared with a set square.'"

Giacomo Andrea's figure has only one set of arms and legs, which are simultaneously circumscribed by a circle and outlined by a square, while "Leonardo deals with [the two propositions] by having the position of his man's arms and legs change. That, I would have to admit, makes his drawing a closer approximation to the textual description than Giacomo Andrea's," McEwen wrote.

One thing is certain. The better Vitruvian man gained international fame, while the simpler but possibly more original one was left to languish in a library for five centuries. That may have to do with the very different fates met by Leonardo and Giacomo Andrea. When the French invaded Milan in 1499, the former fled to safety and went on to achieve eternal renown. The latter stayed in Milan and was hanged, drawn and quartered by the French, and largely forgotten by history ? until now.

Russia says U.N. must rule out Syria intervention (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia signaled on Wednesday it would veto a draft U.N. resolution calling on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down unless it explicitly ruled out military intervention to halt the bloodshed touched off by protests against his rule.

Escalating violence in Syria has killed thousands of people and activists say Assad's forces have stepped up operations this week against opposition strongholds, from the Damascus suburbs to the cities of Hama and Homs and the border provinces of Deraa and Idlib.

Arab and Western states urged the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday to act swiftly on a resolution calling for Assad to delegate powers to his deputy and defuse the 11-month-old uprising against his family's dynastic rule.

But Moscow's envoy to the European Union, Vladimir Chizhov, said there was no chance the Western-Arab draft text could be accepted unless it precisely rejected armed intervention.

The draft "is missing the most important thing: a clear clause ruling out the possibility that the resolution could be used to justify military intervention in Syrian affairs from outside. For this reason I see no chance this draft could be adopted," Chizhov said.

Russia and China, both veto-wielding Security Council members, have resisted a Western push for a resolution condemning the Syrian government's crackdown on unrest.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the resolution could not be used to authorize military intervention and his French counterpart Alain Juppe said such an idea was a myth.

But Chizhov's remarks suggested Moscow, a close strategic ally and important arms supplier to Syria during its 42 years in the grip of the Assad family, would not accept such assurances.

Russia says the West exploited fuzzy wording in a March 2011 U.N. Security Council resolution on Libya to turn a mandate to protect civilians in the North African country's popular uprising into a push for regime change, backed by NATO air strikes, that led to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

Russia has also expressed concern that the draft's threat of "further measures" against Syria could lead to sanctions, which it opposes. Its diplomats also want to remove the draft's support for the Arab League's plan for Assad to cede power.

"ECONOMIC PRESSURE"

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani, who has led the Arab League's efforts to tackle the Syrian crisis, attempted to allay Moscow and Beijing's objections, saying it was trying to avoid a Libyan-style foreign role.

"We are not calling for foreign intervention," he said. "We are advocating the exertion of concrete economic pressure so that the Syrian regime might realize that it is imperative to meet the demands of its people."

He told the 15-member Security Council that Syria's "killing machine is still at work."

Syrian insurgents said Assad's forces extended a military sweep overnight around Damascus to counter a rebel threat that had reached the gates of the sprawling capital.

A statement by a local rebel group in Damascus province said more troops and armor were moving into eastern suburbs and in the mountainous Qalamoun area north of Damascus, which Assad's forces took over this week.

There were army snipers in the suburb of Misraba, which has had no electricity or water for a week. Activists reported shops closed, a lack of basic supplies and tanks in the streets.

North of Damascus, armored troops controlled the town of Rankous and began extending their control into farmland surrounding it, bombarding the village of Telfita overnight, according to opposition activists.

In the Wadi Barada area on the edge of the capital, four people were killed in a tank bombardment on Wednesday to flush out rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) units operating near the capital, activists said.

Syria's state news agency said troops killed 11 members of an "armed terrorist group" outside the southern city of Deraa, and that government forces discovered bomb factories and field hospitals in a raid on armed cells in Irbin and Sabqa, Damascus suburbs where insurgents had appeared recently.

It was not possible to verify the reports as Syria restricts access for independent media.

"The Free Syrian Army has withdrawn but will be back," said Fawaz Tello, a Syrian opposition figure who left for Cairo a few days ago. "The crackdown will only swell its ranks of professional soldiers (and) conscripts."

CALL FOR ACTION

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby called on the U.N. Security Council to take "rapid and decisive action" by approving the resolution.

"Do not let the Syrian people down in its plight," he said.

The United States strongly endorsed the appeal from the Arab League and Qatar for "rapid and decisive action," but China reiterated its reservations.

"China is firmly opposed to the use of force to solve the Syrian problem and resolutely opposes pushing for forced regime change in Syria, as it violates the United Nations Charter and the basic norms guiding the practice of international relations," Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Li Baodong as telling the Security Council.

Syrian U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari rejected the suggestion his government was responsible for the crisis and accused Western powers of dreaming of "the return of colonialism and hegemony" in the Middle East.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the policy of isolation and seeking regime change risked igniting a "much bigger drama" in the Middle East.

"The people who are obsessed with removing regimes in the region, they should be really thinking about the broader picture. And I'm afraid that if this vigor to change regimes persists, we are going to witness a very bad situation much, much, much broader than just Syria, Libya, Egypt or any other single country."

Higher oil prices boost Exxon 4Q profit 2 percent (AP)

NEW YORK ? Exxon Mobil Corp.'s fourth-quarter profit rose 2 percent as higher oil prices made up for a drop in production.

Benchmark crude prices rose 10.3 percent in the final three months of 2011.

That helped Exxon post net income of $9.4 billion, or $1.97 per share, in the fourth quarter, matching Wall Street expectations. It made $9.25 billion, or $1.85 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose 15.6 percent to $121.6 billion in the latest quarter.

The world's largest publicly traded oil company has seen production decline even after spending a record $36.8 billion last year in search of new sources of crude and natural gas.

Exploration projects can take years to yield new production. And some of Exxon's biggest investments recently have been in U.S. natural gas fields, which so far haven't paid off because gas prices have dropped to their lowest level in a decade. Oil and gas production fell 8.8 percent in the fourth quarter compared with the same period last year.

For the full year, Exxon's net income rose 34.8 percent while revenue rose 26.9 percent.

Last week, Chevron Corp. said profits slipped 3.2 percent. ConocoPhillips reported a 66-percent increase in quarterly earnings, though much of that came from the sale of a pipeline and other assets. Royal Dutch Shell expects to report its financial results later this week.

Exxon shares fell by 55 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $84.94 in premarket trading.
