Disabled visitors face high hurdles to London Olympics

The Olympic and Paralympic Games ? which London has promised will be the most accessible and inclusive ever ? are just weeks away. All sports venues are fully equipped for disabled visitors, but many city-goers with physical impairments say they still feel like second-class citizens on public transport.

?I am shocked at how disabled I am here; I have never felt so handicapped,? said Laura Hamilton, a 28-year-old American with muscular dystrophy living in London.

?I?m scared to go out on my own,? said the Californian, who quit her job in San Francisco and moved to Britain in March ?to see the world? before her condition deteriorates.

The London Underground is by far the fastest way to get around the city, but with just a handful of stations in the historic heart of the capital offering step-free access, Hamilton said ?it?s more of a novelty for wheelchair users.?

All black cabs are accessible, but using taxis or a car as a primary form of transportation is prohibitively expensive for most residents, so wheelchair users rely heavily on buses.

But Hamilton, who uses a small electric scooter, said that ?most times the drivers don?t want to pull into the curb so I?m told I can?t get on at all.?

Paralympian crawls off train
Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, who won 11 gold medals for Great Britain in five Paralympic Games and is a board member of Transport for London (TFL), the city's group responsible for the transportation system,?described how she recently had to crawl off a train.?

?My train was late into Kings Cross Station and the station had pretty much closed and there was no one who came to get me,? said the parliamentarian and TV presenter, who was born with spina bifida.

?So I got out of my chair, pushed my chair off, and crawled out of the train and got back into it,? she said.

Despite that incident and other cases of being ?forgotten? on long-distance trains, the athlete said the situation within London has improved greatly in recent years.

Tanni Grey-Thompson waves to the crowd after her last-ever race in the T53 200 meters in 2007.

?But people coming from countries like the U.S. and Canada will find it a bit more tricky,? she said.

Dating back to 1863, the London Underground is the oldest metropolitan railway in the world. Disabled access renovations only began after a wheelchair ban was lifted less than 20 years ago.

TFL, which is run by the mayor, scrapped its promise to make a quarter of stations step free by 2010 and a third by 2013.

Now, 65 of the 270 stations have step free access from street to platform, but most of those still have a gap between the platform and train.

Wheelchair access will be available at locations key to the Games ? Stratford for the Olympic Park, Southfields for tennis at Wimbledon, and Green Park for equestrian events ? but, not at the vast majority of tourist hot spots, including Piccadilly Circus, Notting Hill, and Covent Garden.

Grey-Thompson said upgrades had to be chosen carefully as ?it costs more than 100 million pounds to make a central London station wheelchair-accessible.?

?Left to the side of the road?
Meanwhile, the bus system was completely overhauled in 2007.

?Our bus fleet is the most accessible fleet in the world ? with every one of our 8,500 buses low-floor wheelchair-accessible and fitted with ramps,? said Wayne Trevor, Accessibility Manager for TFL. However, only 60 percent of bus stops are fully accessible.

?We get a lot of complaints from wheelchair users left to the side of the road,? said Lianna Etkind, Campaigns and Outreach Coordinator for disabled rights group Transport for All.

Californian Hamilton said she often feels like a ?third-class citizen? as her husband begs drivers to let her on and one in four drive away without her.

?Drivers are definitely required to pick up disabled passengers,? TFL said in an email response, adding that passengers are encouraged to lodge complaints which can result in driver retraining or dismissal.

The installation of tactile paving and audio-visual displays has assisted blind and deaf passengers, but recession-induced staff cuts have made it harder to receive personal assistance.

Carole Cherrington, a blind 43-year-old who has lived in London her entire life, took the Underground on her own for the first time in March. She said she had to rely on a stranger to get to her destination and found the journey ?extremely distressing.?

TFL has since provided her with a ?travel buddy? free of charge, but she said: ?I feel excluded by society in being able to get around independently; I hope having the Paralympics here will bring more awareness.?

Michael Theobold, who is profoundly deaf, said that he had encountered dangerous situations when he couldn?t hear last-minute audio announcements.

The 64-year-old former teacher recalled in an email interview that he was unable to hear a warning to move along the track at Marble Arch station.

?There was a sudden surge of people and I was very nearly knocked off balance on to the electrified track,? he said.

?An army of volunteers?
Transport for London is eager to ensure that the Olympics run without a hitch.

?An army of volunteers will be drafted in to assist our operations during Games time,? TFL said in an email.

Scores of extra buses, manual track-to train ramps, and fast-response elevator engineers will also be brought in.

Transport for All?s Etkind said she was hopeful that the extra resources would help disabled visitors get around the city successfully.?

?It?s great that TFL is improving access to the Underground during the Olympics and Paralympics. But access and inclusion isn?t just for Games time, it?s for life,? she said.

Another source puts it even more bluntly: "I've heard it time and time again: The second Joe goes to jail, Teresa's getting her own show."

Dell Finally Does An All-In-One PC Right (By Cloning The iMac)

xpsone27Dell has sold various all-in-one computers for years. These systems were mostly insipid, humdrum computers not fit for anything other than being a family's portal to Facebook. Even with touchscreens, Dell's all-in-one systems failed to be serious contenders in the space. Enter the XPS One 27. Announced today and detailed by Engadget, this all-in-one-system is clone of the iMac. Even the 2560 x 1440 screen resolution is the same. To Dell's credit, the XPS One 27 ships with Intel's latest generation of processors while the Apple iMac is still stuck with the older chips -- something Apple will no doubt address in the next revision. But it's hard to ignore the similarities. Hell, even the computer's support tower has a large hole for cable management a la iMac.

Tips And Advice For Dealing With Personal Bankruptcy | sinimotor.com

Description

Don?t wait too long to file for bankruptcy. So many people suffer with debts, and sleepless nights for years. They could have filed for bankruptcy, and been in the clear by now. If you are thinking about filing for bankruptcy, time is of the essence. Make the decision so you can move on that much quicker.

Although filing for personal bankruptcy is one solution to debt problems, it is not the only solution. It is not necessarily the best solution. Before filing for bankruptcy, consider attempting to make payment agreements with your creditors. Credit counseling agencies will be able to help you work out such an agreement.

One of the biggest problems that people face when filing personal bankruptcy is they are in too deep before they seek help. They have borrowed against 401 K?s, IRA?s, and sold personal belongings. These things have unintended consequences. These loans are not allowable deductions in the eyes of the court and will not be used in the bankruptcy calculations.

One you realize you are in financial trouble and have decided to file for personal bankruptcy you should move quickly. Waiting to the last minute to file bankruptcy can cause a number of issues. You may face negative repercussions such as wage or bank account garnishment or foreclosure on your home. You can also not leave time enough for a thorough review of your financial situation, which will limit your available options.

Be honest when talking to your attorney. Your attorney is there to help you, and omitting details about your circumstances will not only make his/her job more difficult, but also may prevent you from getting your discharge. Furthermore, if you don?t disclose what you need to in your bankruptcy petition, you could be accused of committing bankruptcy fraud.

You should start selling things around your house and making budget cuts if you have filed for bankruptcy. Now is the time to start saving money and stop being reckless. You can focus on the future and get your finances in order, so that you can have a promising financial future for the rest of your life.

Do not attempt to pay off any of your favorite creditors before you file for bankruptcy. The reason is that all of your assets will be liquidated and each creditor gets their fair share. It is not your job to decide who deserves to be paid back and who does not.

Try not to put off filing for bankruptcy. If you need to file for bankruptcy, don?t procrastinate. Procrastinating may make legal matters more complicated. It may also cause you a great deal of unneeded stress. You need a clear head and a calm mind when preparing to file for bankruptcy. Don?t let stress complicate things.

A good personal bankruptcy tip is to take it all in stride. You have to remind yourself that you aren?t alone by having to file for bankruptcy. Many other people have found themselves in this situation and a lot of them are probably willing to offer you some form of guidance.

As noted earlier, the current economic climate keeps more people in a constant state of struggle, and many of them are turning to bankruptcy. If you decide that this option is the best one for you, hopefully this article has provided you with helpful guidance you can use to face your financial future and make positive changes.

APNewsBreak: FEMA trailer litigation nears end

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A class-action settlement agreement has been reached to resolve nearly all the remaining court claims over allegations that government-issued trailers exposed Gulf Coast residents to hazardous fumes after Hurricane Katrina, a lead plaintiffs' attorney said Monday.

In a court filing late Monday, plaintiffs' lawyers and several companies that manufactured FEMA trailers after the 2005 storm asked U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt to approve an expanded version of a multimillion-dollar deal initially announced in April.

A separate agreement with four FEMA contractors that installed or refurbished trailers will be filed Tuesday, lead plaintiffs' attorney Gerald Meunier told The Associated Press.

Nearly two dozen FEMA trailer makers agreed last month to pay a total of $14.8 million to resolve claims over elevated formaldehyde levels in FEMA trailers following hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Monday's expanded settlement agreement includes claims against trailer manufacturers Gulf Stream Coach Inc., Forest River Inc., Jayco Inc. and Monaco Coach Corp. Representatives of the four companies didn't immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

FEMA contractors Shaw Environmental Inc., Bechtel Corp., Fluor Enterprises Inc. and CH2M Hill Constructors Inc. also have reached agreements with the plaintiffs' lawyers, according to Meunier.

The amount of money that would be paid by each of the eight companies wasn't immediately disclosed.

Residents of Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and Mississippi who lived in FEMA trailers after the 2005 hurricanes are eligible to participate.

Engelhardt is expected to hold a fairness hearing on the proposed settlement on Sept. 27. If he approves the deal, a group of Texas residents' claims against the Federal Emergency Management Agency would be the only formaldehyde-related claims that haven't been settled or dismissed by the judge, Meunier said.

Meunier estimates that roughly 60,000 plaintiffs could benefit from the entire settlement. He said the deal is a "positive development" for residents even if the amount of compensation is lower than many had anticipated when the case started nearly five years ago.

"But I think the outcome here reflects the realities of the case," Meunier said.

Meunier said the plaintiffs' lawyers tested a sample of FEMA trailers but couldn't test every unit occupied by every plaintiff.

"I think that presented a challenge," he said. "It was our belief that to go on trying thousands of cases with that kind of challenge in presenting the evidence ... was not going to be a very satisfactory alternative for the clients."

Daniel Balhoff, a court-appointed mediator who helped broker the proposed settlement with FEMA trailer makers, said in a court filing Monday that he believes the deal is "fair, adequate and reasonable."

"The plaintiffs are faced with significant burden of proof issues with respect to causation," he said. "For many plaintiffs, the manufactured home no longer exists or can no longer be located. Further, many individual plaintiffs faced causation problems due to the fact that they were smokers or had independent bases separate from formaldehyde exposure for their health issues."

Formaldehyde, a chemical commonly found in building materials, can cause breathing problems and is classified as a carcinogen. Government tests on hundreds of trailers in Louisiana and Mississippi found formaldehyde levels that were, on average, about five times what people are exposed to in most modern homes.

FEMA, which isn't a party in the settlement, downplayed formaldehyde risks for months before those test results were announced in February 2008. As early as 2006, trailer occupants began reporting headaches, nosebleeds and difficulty breathing.

The federal agency provided trailers or mobile homes to more than 144,000 families after the hurricanes. Plaintiffs' lawyers have accused the trailer makers of using shoddy building materials and methods in a rush to meet the agency's unprecedented demand for temporary housing.

In October 2007, Engelhardt was picked to oversee hundreds of consolidated lawsuits and tens of thousands of related claims. Since then, the case has generated more than 25,000 docket entries and resulted in three trials for individual claims. The juries in all three trials sided with the companies and didn't award any damages.

The settlement isn't the first in the litigation. Last year, a group of companies that manufactured mobile homes for FEMA after Katrina agreed to pay $2.6 million to resolve thousands of related claims. Mobile homes are larger and sturdier than travel trailers, which housed the majority of storm victims and are more prone to elevated levels of formaldehyde.

Fleetwood Enterprises Inc., which supplied FEMA with travel trailers before it filed for bankruptcy in 2009, agreed in 2010 to a settlement resolving about 7,500 to 8,000 claims. Terms of that deal weren't disclosed.

Engelhardt dismissed claims against FEMA by residents of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Plaintiffs' attorneys have asked the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans to overturn Engelhardt's dismissal of the Louisiana claims. The appeals court previously upheld his dismissal of the Mississippi and Alabama claims.

Sleep Apnea Linked to Higher Cancer Death Risk

SUNDAY, May 20 (HealthDay News) -- Sleep apnea has already been linked to a host of adverse health problems, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Now, new research suggests that in people who already have cancer, the sleep disorder may raise their risk of dying from cancer.

People with the most severe sleep apnea -- those who have 30 or more episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour of sleep -- had almost five times the risk of cancer death compared to someone without sleep apnea.

"Sleep apnea is the periodic pausing of breathing during sleep that results in drops in oxygen levels in your blood. It causes snoring and sleepiness during the day," explained study author Dr. Javier Nieto, chair of the department of population health sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, in Madison.

"Aside from being an annoyance to your spouse, family members and maybe even your neighbors depending on how loud your snoring is, sleep apnea is a severe problem. Drowsiness and sleepiness during the day increase the risk of accidents, and sleep apnea is associated with cardiovascular disease, heart disease, strokes, hypertension and cardiovascular mortality. Now, we see this new angle: an increase in cancer mortality," said Nieto.

Nieto is scheduled to present the study Sunday at the American Thoracic Society International Conference, in San Francisco.

Nieto said the new study was suggested by researchers from the University of Barcelona in Spain who found that when mice were deprived of oxygen periodically, skin cancer tumors grew faster in the mice. And, cancer cells in the lab that are deprived of oxygen produce molecules that stimulate the growth of blood vessels in an attempt to get more oxygen, he said.

Nieto and the Spanish researchers wondered if this effect was the same in humans. To test that theory, they reviewed data from more than 1,500 people included in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort. This study included 22 years of mortality data, as well as information from sleep studies.

The researchers adjusted the data to account for age, sex, body mass, smoking and other factors that might affect the risk of cancer death, and they found that sleep apnea increased the risk of cancer death. They also found that the more severe the sleep apnea, the more likely someone was to die from cancer.

People with mild sleep apnea -- five to 14.9 episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour -- had a 10 percent increased risk of cancer death, while those with moderate sleep apnea -- 15 to 29.9 episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour -- had double the risk of cancer death. Those with severe sleep apnea -- more than 30 episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour -- had a 4.8 times higher risk of cancer death.

Nieto said the study didn't prove a cause-and-effect relationship, but the association was quite strong. And, he noted that the findings were consistent in humans, animals and in cells.

He added that there is also a plausible mechanism for this association. When you have cancer and you repeatedly have episodes of low or no oxygen, the cancer cells "try to compensate for the lack of oxygen by growing additional blood vessels to get more oxygen. It's a defense mechanism," Nieto said. And, as those blood vessels keep growing, it helps the tumor to spread, he explained.

Dr. Steven Park, a sleep medicine specialist and otorhinolaryngologist at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, said he wasn't surprised by the findings.

"This goes along with the link between sleep apnea and pretty much every chronic medical condition out there," Park said. But, he added that this study's findings need to be confirmed in other studies, and ideally be published in a peer-reviewed journal. Research presented at medical meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

"Anyone with snoring, severe daytime fatigue, lack of memory or focus, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even someone who has to get up to go to the bathroom at night should be screened for sleep apnea," Park said. He added that it's possible to have sleep apnea without snoring, especially for women. So, if you're getting enough sleep at night, yet still feel tired during the day, it's important to bring this up to your doctor.

Park said there are home-monitoring devices that can be used to screen people at home initially.

Nieto said that treating sleep apnea will improve your quality of life, as well as reduce your risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. And, if you have cancer, he said, treating sleep apnea may help increase your odds of surviving cancer.

How to Deal with Family Opposition of Homeschool { Community ...

I love the Holy Spirit-led Homeschooling Facebook community. ?If you are on Facebook, and you haven?t joined, you should. :) ?There are over 8,000 homeschooling families who make the page great. ?One of my favorite aspects of the community are the?questions and conversations that spark. A common?occurrence is a homeschooling mom posting a?question and in return she?ll receive anywhere from 40-100 answers! ?I want to carry some of that wonderful helpfulness here onto the blog; especially for readers who don?t use Facebook. ?

This inspired?my new?Community?Question special feature! ?As long as I receive questions via email, smoke?signal, fax machine,?or Facebook, I will answer a 1-3 of those here on Holy Spirit-led Homeschooling in a blog post each week. ?Then, you?ll have the?opportunity?to share your thoughts and tips in the comments of the post and/or in the Facebook community.

Today lets tackle one question; I know this is a topic that all homeschoolers face at some point in their?journey:

T.B.?asked?~

?How do you deal with extreme family opposition and the implication that you are not smart enough to teach your own children? I am a stay at home mom and I have family who are ?constantly encouraging my 4-year-old?to ask when she can go to ?school.? ?

Oooo, boy ? we?ve been there. ?We have faced extreme family opposition; and I?ve faced criticism that I?m not smart enough to teach my children. ?Let me break this question down a little further.

Family Opposition of Homeschool

It hurts. ?You want so bad for everyone in your family to see that homeschooling is a beautiful?gift. ?Instead, you?re met with blank stares, or rude comments, about your well thought and prayed out choice. ?Honestly, after homeschooling almost a decade we still have some family members who we?ve?realized?may never fully accept our homeschool life. ?Like any kind of opposition we?recognize that this is from the enemy. ?We all go through seasons of opposition, especially when we are obeying the Lord.

  • Exodus 14:14 ?The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest.? ?This is my power verse in many situations. ?It works just fine to claim and cling to when you?re meeting opposition from family too.
  • I wrote two articles on Overcoming?Judgments?of Homeschooling and When?Judgments?Come
  • Focus on the positive voices.? Focus on those who do support your journey. ?Thank the family and friends who stand beside you. As long as my husband and I are in agreement, and we?re following the Lord, I have to focus on those?positives.

Am I Smart Enough to Homeschool My Children

I know moms with only their G.E.D?s who are?successfully?homeschooling their children. I also know mothers who are highly educated by the world?s standards and are also doing an outstanding job home educating their children.?I feel with a heart for the Lord, and basic life experience, any mother can homeschool their child with flying colors.? I feel that I?m learning right along with my children. ?It?s not a matter of me teaching them everything they need to know. ?My job is to teach them about Jesus and to teach them how to learn. ?I mean, really ? did you graduate high school knowing it all? ?Most of us didn?t. ?I?ve learned most things as an adult. ?I?m sure I?ll fill in my own personal gaps while learning along side my children. ?Homeschool moms have the gift of receiving an education twice!

The Myth of Teacher Qualifications?is an article written?by Chris Klicka, former Senior Counsel for?HSLDA. ?This article sites several examples in reference to the myth of needing a teaching?license?to be an effective teacher (nothing against my Christian teacher friends out there ? we?re encouraging moms that they can do their God-given jobs, without the teacher?s license).

A statement from the article, ?Dr. Peavey concluded his testimony with practical examples of excellent student achievement results by students who were being taught by their parents, most without degrees or certificates. He explained that many studies demonstrate that homeschooled children ?commonly score a year or more above their peers in regular schools on standard measures of achievement.?5?Remember, that was even considering homeschooling parents without degrees.

No matter what family opposition you face, the Lord picked YOU to be the mother of your children. ?You are anointed to be their teacher. ?It is you who the Lord pre-ordained to guide these sweet souls to Him. ?Neither earthly qualification, nor approval of man, will validate or trump God?s purpose for your homeschool; which is to touch and change the world for His glory.

Now it?s your turn to join in and encourage this homeschool mom. Answer in the comments or on Facebook. ?

  • How do you handle opposition from family over your homeschool? ?
  • Have you had to deal with being told or feeling that you?re not smart enough to teach your children? ?
  • What are some ways the Lord has led you through these situations?

Guardian looking for a summoner.

The story of Yuna defeating Sin, and bringing the eternal calm is legendary. She obtained the title of High Summoner, and all cheered her name in the land of Spira. This isn't her story though, this story took place long before the time of Yuna, or even Braska her father. The story begins two years after the second Calm. A young girl has chosen to take up the title of summoner and defeat Sin. She won't do it alone though, aided by her four loyal guardians, she will make the perilous journey to receive the blessings of all the fayth of Spira. Her Pilgrimage will be a hard one, with forces hindering her path constantly, but with determination and the help of friends, she may just succeed. A long journey awaits, one filled with hardship, lost, and pain, but one also willed with happiness, discovery, and even love.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I'm looking for a partner for a 1x1 who would like to play the part of a female summoner. Myself playing a guardian who protects her during her journey. The story has a twofold plot involving the adventures through Spira, and the romance between the summoner and her guardian. I want this to be a story characterized not just by lovey dovey moments, but true action and intense battles.

What I am looking for in a partner:
1) A partner who can post on a semi regular basis, and at least a couple solid paragraphs.
2) Someone who can add plot, depth, and even twist to the story. I have a some plot points in mind, but also want the story to be driven by the decisions of the characters, not set in stone never to be changed.
3)Someone who can handle playing more than one character. I want the guardians to develop the story as well and want a partner who can fit them into the dialogue and story, without leaving them behind, or forgetting their main character.
4) I want the story to be no more than pg-14ish. I want it to be true to life, foul language when it fits, attacks leaving true injuries, and romance between the character's without it going to far.

What I don't want in a partner:
1) Someone who flakes without at least letting me know. It's sucks and often leaves me hanging, wondering if you are even coming back.
2) Someone who just flips the story in awkward situations, or reads into things that have never been said or their character shouldn't know. This is frustrating and often kills a RP for me.
3) Someone who has never played this game before. You need a working knowledge of Spira and its culture.

If you are interested, please PM me with any questions you have. This is a story that I really want to see played out, and would love to find someone with as much passion I do for Spira. If you have any ideas you would like to share, please do. I will be eagerly anticipating a reply from someone, and can't wait to start this roleplay with you. Yes you, right there! don't think i can't see you on the other side of this screen. Don't make me beg. ;^)

Price of gasoline drops 6 cents in the past 2 weeks

By Reuters

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States fell 6.2 cents to $3.78 in the last two weeks due to a drop in crude oil prices, partly on concerns about Europe's economy, according to the nationwide Lundberg Survey.

According to the survey of some 2,500 gas stations in the continental United States, the national average for regular gasoline as of May 18, was down more than 12 cents a gallon compared with a year earlier.

It was the third straight survey to show a price decline. Prices fell 18.4 cents during the six week period, which survey editor Trilby Lundberg said was "enough" for consumers to feel.

San Francisco had the highest average price for self-serve, regular gasoline in the two-week survey period at $4.36 a gallon, while drivers in Memphis, Tennessee, paid $3.34, the least in the country.?

Chinese activist renews call to fight injustice

NEW YORK (AP) ? A blind Chinese legal activist who escaped house arrest, endured a nearly monthlong diplomatic tussle and a hurried daylong flight paused ever so briefly upon his arrival in New York City before taking up a familiar fight.

Taken from a hospital in his homeland and put on a plane for the U.S. after Chinese authorities suddenly told him Saturday to pack and prepare to leave, Chen Guangcheng embraced his new surroundings at New York University and renewed his call to fight injustice.

"I believe that no matter how difficult the environment nothing is impossible if you put your heart to it," he told a cheering crowd at NYU shortly after arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport on Saturday evening.

"We should link our arms to continue in the fight for the goodness in the world and to fight against injustice. So, I think that all people should apply themselves to this end to work for the common good worldwide."

Chen was suddenly allowed to leave China earlier in the day, ending a dispute that tested U.S.-China relations.

Dressed in a white shirt and khaki pants and using crutches, his right leg in a cast, Chen was greeted with cheers when he arrived at the apartment in Manhattan's Greenwich Village where he will live with his family. The complex houses faculty and graduate students of New York University, where Chen is expected to attend law school.

"For the past seven years, I have never had a day's rest," Chen said through a translator, "so I have come here for a bit of recuperation for body and in spirit."

Chen thanked the U.S. and Chinese governments, along with the embassies of Switzerland, Canada and France.

"After much turbulence, I have come out of Shandong," he said, referring to the Chinese province where he was under house arrest. The U.S. has granted him partial citizenship rights, he said.

Chen gave a short statement, which was greeted by cheers in Mandarin and English. He didn't take questions from reporters.

The departure of Chen, his wife and two children to the United States marked the conclusion of nearly a month of uncertainty and years of mistreatment by local authorities for the self-taught activist.

After seven years of prison and house arrest, Chen made a daring escape from his rural village in April and was given sanctuary inside the U.S. Embassy, triggering a diplomatic standoff over his fate. With Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Beijing for annual high-level discussions, officials struck a deal that let Chen walk free, only to see him have second thoughts. That forced new negotiations that led to an agreement to send him to the U.S. to study law, a goal of his, at New York University.

"Thousands of thoughts are surging to my mind," Chen said before he left China. His concerns, he said, included whether authorities would retaliate for his negotiated departure by punishing his relatives left behind. It also was unclear whether the government will allow him to return.

In New York, he said China had promised him protection of his rights as a citizen there.

"I am very gratified to see that the Chinese government has been dealing with the situation with restraint and calm, and I hope to see that they continue to open discourse and earn the respect and trust of the people."

Chen's expected attendance at New York University comes from his association with Jerome Cohen, a law professor there who advised Chen while he was in the U.S. Embassy. The two met when Chen came to the United States on a State Department program in 2003, and Cohen has been staunch advocate for him since.

Before leaving China, Chen asked his supporters and others in the activist community for their understanding of his desire to leave the front lines of the rights struggle in China.

"I am requesting a leave of absence, and I hope that they will understand," he said.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland praised the quiet negotiations that freed him.

"We also express our appreciation for the manner in which we were able to resolve this matter and to support Mr. Chen's desire to study in the U.S. and pursue his goals," Nuland said in a statement.

The White House also said it was pleased with the outcome of negotiations.

China's Foreign Ministry said it had no comment. The government's news agency, Xinhua, issued a brief report saying that Chen "has applied for study in the United States via normal channels in line with the law."

Chen's supporters welcomed his departure. "This is great progress," said U.S.-based rights activist Bob Fu. "It's a victory for freedom fighters."

The 40-year-old Chen is emblematic of a new breed of activists that the Communist Party finds threatening. Often from rural and working-class families, these "rights defenders," as they are called, are unlike the students and intellectuals from the elite academies and major cities of previous democracy movements and thus could potentially appeal to ordinary Chinese.

Chen gained recognition for crusading for the disabled and for farmers' rights and fighting against forced abortions in his rural community. That angered local officials, who seemed to wage a personal vendetta against him, convicting him in 2006 on what his supporters say were fabricated charges and then holding him for the past 20 months in illegal house arrest.

Even with the backstage negotiations, Chen's departure came hastily. Chen spent the last 2 1/2 weeks in a hospital for the foot he broke escaping house arrest. Only on Wednesday did Chinese authorities help him complete the paperwork needed for his passport.

Chen said by telephone Saturday that he was informed at the hospital just before noon to pack his bags to leave. Officials did not give him and his family passports or inform them of their flight details until after they got to the airport.

Seeming ambivalent, Chen said that he was "not happy" about leaving and that he had a lot on his mind, including worries about retaliation against his extended family back home. His nephew, Chen Kegui, is accused of attempted murder after he allegedly used a kitchen knife to attack officials who stormed his house after discovering Chen Guangcheng was missing.

"I hope that the government will fulfill the promises it made to me, all of its promises," Chen said. Such promises included launching an investigation into abuses against him and his family in Shandong province, he said before the phone call was cut off.

Much as Chen has said he wants return to China, it remains uncertain whether the Chinese government would bar him, as they have done with many exiled activists.

"Chen's departure for the U.S. does not and should not in any way mark a 'mission accomplished' moment for the U.S. government," said Phelim Kine, a senior Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. "The harder, longer-term part is ensuring his right under international law to return to China when he sees fit."

Cancer vaccine combination therapy shows survival benefit in breast cancer

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

A vaccine that targets cancer cells in combination with the drug letrozole, a standard hormonal therapy against breast cancer, significantly increased survival when tested in mice, a team of UC Davis investigators has found.

The findings will be published today in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.

"We found that the vaccine and the hormonal drug letrozole were more effective when given together," said Michael DeGregorio, UC Davis professor of hematology and oncology and principal investigator of the study. "This adds critical evidence that immunotherapy with vaccines, which has traditionally been used to prevent infectious diseases, is also a promising new approach to combating cancer."

The vaccine, known as L-BLP25 (Stimuvax?), specifically targets Mucin1 glycoprotein (MUC1), an antigen that is expressed in an altered form on cancer cells. When introduced into the body, the vaccine generates an immune response by T-lymphocytes, which then recognize and destroy the tumor cells. Mice in the study were injected weekly with the vaccine -- or a placebo -- for eight weeks.

In addition to the vaccine or placebo, some mice were treated with either letrozole or tamoxifen, commonly used hormonal therapies against breast cancer. Both drugs work by blocking the effects of estrogen, which can slow or stop the growth of some types of breast cancer cells that need the hormone to grow. Although the drugs have similar actions, the benefits of the vaccine were greatest in the mice treated with letrozole; in contrast, vaccinated mice given tamoxifen actually fared worse than those given either the vaccine or tamoxifen alone.

"Hormonal drugs affect the immune system in different ways, and apparently the actions of tamoxifen prevent the vaccine from working effectively," said DeGregorio. "This highlights the importance of rigorous testing of different combinations of therapies before using them in patients."

The article, available online, is titled "L-BLP25 vaccine plus letrozole induces a TH1 immune response and has additive antitumor activity in MUC-1 expressing mammary tumors in mice."

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States, following lung cancer. Most cases of breast cancer are "estrogen-dependent" and respond to hormonal therapy. For tumors that are independent of hormonal influence, treatment options are limited and would especially benefit from a new treatment strategy such as a vaccine.

The vaccine was found to work best when the tumor burden -- the amount of cancer present -- was low, indicating that the vaccine may one day be best used as a preventative measure for women at high risk of developing breast cancer or for treatment of early disease.

Vaccine therapy is a promising new cancer-fighting strategy; the first therapeutic vaccine for prostate cancer was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2010. Trials with L-BLP25 vaccine are currently under way for lung and pancreatic cancers, whose cells also express altered MUC1, the same tumor-associated antigen found on breast cancer cells. The current study is the first known to the authors to demonstrate that a hormonal therapy combined with a vaccine provides additive antitumor activity and survival benefit.

"This was a true alliance between academics and industry," added DeGregorio, who noted that trials such as this one are especially expensive because of the number of mice needed and the length of time -- about three and a half years -- required to establish their findings. The study had support from the pharmaceutical company, Merck KGaA Darmstadt Germany.

DeGregorio's group will further test the vaccine with other conventional therapies and determine optimal dosing. Clinical trials in patients with breast cancer are in the planning stages.

After refreshing the uploading tool (and throwing in some better editing functions), Flickr's decided to work on its looks. The size will also adjust itself to the resolution and size of your screen -- that's the fluid part of it -- avoid any nasty upscaling business. Hit up your own Flickr gallery to see the new design in action and expect more changes in the near future -- the developers are promising more to come.
