Here's Her 4-1-1 on Avoiding the Motherhood Burnout ? Her View ...

Written by Heather Riggleman

After a particularly stressful day, I laid my kids down for a nap. Not that they needed to rest, but I needed a reprieve, a chance to regain my sanity. As I sat there relishing the quiet; the smell of bubblegum fresh caught my attention and perked my brain. As I followed the scent, it led me to my daughter?s room. There I discovered several things:

1. Myself?questioning why I chose to have kids in the first place.?

2. My daughter has a very creative side, not sure if I was ready to embrace it or scream.

3. Blue sparkle toothpaste had been used as a decoration technique on everything. The carpet, her toys, and mainly, her favorite castle. (P.s. her room now has wood flooring like the rest of the house).?

On days like today, I find myself on the verge of a Mommy Burn Out and the idea of being in an office is more enticing than being at home. And I say enticing because I LOVE being at home with my kids except for moments like this. ?I question how this role as mommy has all but consumed every part of me; my body, my time, my home, my paycheck, my identity, and my heart. :-)

Is it worth being setting aside my dreams and ambitious career ideas to parent? YES?with that said, we need to be careful of the motherhood burnout. The burnout happens when we don?t carve ?me time.? Many women can identify with what I?m saying and still others cannot. Take for example an elderly mentor whom I confided in. I mentioned I needed ?me? time. Time to sort out my writing, my talents, to shave my legs if needed. She waited for me to finish my soapbox speech before she said, ?Heather, you?ll have plenty of time for you later. Right now, your entire role in life depends on being a mother.?? Taken back, I didn?t say anything. Her statement didn?t sit well with me.?

As I picked apart her conversation, I understood her view of motherhood and its nobility. It is the greatest job on this earth, I get that. But?there?s always a but, but did I give up ?me? time when I decided to become a mother? I don?t think so.

I don?t care if you were made to mother, we all need me time. Especially when you walk in on bubble gum tooth paste 3-D sculpture, or have a demanding three-year-old. If we take care of ourselves first, we are better moms and women.

Do you feel this way? Don?t give up, here?s the 411 on avoiding burn out in motherhood. First and foremost, remember why you choose to be home with your kids.

Regain Your Perspective

  1. I want to be there for my kids, to create childhood memories they will one day be fond of. No one else can do that like I can.
  2. I want to be there every step of the way to instill my family values, morals, and ensure their hearts reflect our faith. ?Only I can do this.
  3. I want to be there for the tough decisions they have to make, to pick them up when they stumble, and to cheer them on when they succeed. No one else can value my children the way I do. No one else can empower them the way I do.
  4. No one else values their hearts like I do. It takes prodding, molding, and shaping of the everyday life to shape their hearts to be ready for life.
  5. Being a mom requires time, commitment, and it creates a life time?investment. If I invest in my kids, they will invest in themselves and?their?families in the future

Connecting Mayor Bloomberg's endorsement of Scott Brown, his downplaying of the Barclays/LIBOR scandal, and "corporatist privilege" (that connects to "Bankers Gone Wild")

? More On Why Sued-For LIBOR Losses May Be Substantial And More On Figuring Why Mayor Bloomberg Is Minimizing The Public's Loss | Main

Connecting Mayor Bloomberg's endorsement of Scott Brown, his downplaying of the Barclays/LIBOR scandal, and "corporatist privilege" (that connects to "Bankers Gone Wild")

Atlantic Yards Report

Michael D. D. White has been writing up a storm on his Noticing New York blog about Barclays, the LIBOR scandal, and the possibility of local governmental agencies gaining recompense in a lawsuit.

In his latest, he muses about Mayor Mike Bloomberg's surprising announcement that he supports incumbent Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, a Republican, against law professor (and Wall Street critic) Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat:

Come on now! No, it?s pretty clear, Brown?s gun control record is just a contrived cover for Bloomberg?s work to keep the banks unregulated and unaccountable. That probably puts the above point #3 in the lead for the reason that Bloomberg is also so eager to minimize the public?s LIBOR losses.
But maybe it doesn?t make any difference which exactly of those above three reasons explains why Bloomberg is minimizing the possibility of the public?s loses at the hands of Barclays and the other banks, because whether it's "Barclays" (Ratner/Prokhorov) arena boondoggling, Barclays bank president befriending or Barclays Bank LIBOR manipulations, all three of those explanations are probably essentially the same: Bloomberg supports a corporatist privilege for the 1% to manipulate, lie and scheme to scam the 99%.

"Bankers Gone Wild"

In this week's New Yorker, "Financial Page" columnist James Surowiecki wrote Bankers Gone Wild. It's a pretty chilling summary: manipulating LIBOR was easy; banks had much incentive to tell lies; and self-regulation doesn?t work in finance:

The Barclays traders, for instance, sent e-mails casually thanking their colleagues for lying, and sometimes talked with their supervisors about their plans, revealing a culture in which deception was simply part of how things got done. As the behavioral economist Dan Ariely writes in his new book, ?The Honest Truth About Dishonesty,? cheating is contagious?when we see others succeed by cheating, it makes us more likely to cheat as well. So when institutions tolerate, and even reward, bad behavior, all that self-regulation gets you is bankers gone wild.

Drought May Mean Fewer, Smaller Animals At Fairs

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? State and county fairs in the sweltering and drought-stricken Midwest may see some skinnier pigs and smaller squash this year.

The dozen pigs Greg Marzahl and his 15-year-old daughter are bringing to the Wisconsin State Fair are smaller than those he'd normally show. Marzahl, who had three grand champion pigs last year, said his pigs are around about 15 pounds smaller than the normal 275 pounds. The heat is affecting their virility and appetites, he said.

"We've had a hard time getting them to eat enough to get that condition on them," said Marzahl, who has about 35 show pigs and a few lambs on his 160-acre farm in Oxford.

The Wisconsin fair opens its 11-day run Thursday in the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis. State fairs also are set to begin in the next two weeks in Indiana, Iowa and Illinois, which also have been hit hard this summer by unusual heat and drought.

Marzahl still plans to bring his pigs to the fair, expecting his competition will have smaller animals too.

That's been the case at some county fairs that already have been held in the state.

David Laatsch, an agriculture agent with the University of Wisconsin Extension, said he's judge several poultry contests for county fairs this summer and has seen fewer exhibitors and smaller animals. The heat also causes narrower and fewer feathers on poultry, he said.

Laatsch thought some potential exhibitors might have decided to leave their dairy cows home because they were already stressed. Heat disrupts cows' reproductive cycles, and their milk production goes down, he said.

Liana Glavin, secretary of the Adams County Fair Board, has three teenage daughters involved in 4-H. They will bring some of their 12 cows to the county fair this year but leave a mother and her calf behind because of the stress of the heat.

Other exhibitors aren't even coming, she said, although she didn't immediately have figures.

Glavin said the pasture on her farm in Arkdale is completely dried up, when normally the cows can eat until October. Prices for feed have skyrocketed, and Glavin said she doesn't know how much longer she can afford to keep her farm if the prices stay high and the drought continues.

"It's scary but at the same time it's sad," she said. "My kids bought their cows for a 4-H project. We've had the cows for seven years. When you only have 12 of them you are more attached to them."

Astrid Newenhouse, an agriculture scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, judged vegetables and flowers for ages 8 to 18 at this year's Dane County fair, which ended July 22. She said entries were down by about two-thirds.

"I have never seen the drought like that before, this severe before," said Newenhouse, who has judged for 23 years.

The fair had just one gladiola. Typically, it has about two dozen. She said lilies were smaller and not as colorful and all of the vegetables were smaller.

Most years when she asks children to describe their projects, they usually say what they liked best about the plant.

This year, "the first thing they mentioned was how much they watered them," Newenhouse said.

Colts' Luck eases into camp with light workout

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) ? The Indianapolis Colts finally found something Andrew Luck can't do: sing.

Now they're hoping the No. 1 overall draft pick will be in tune when he starts throwing Sunday afternoon.

Less than 24 hours after serenading teammates with "Country Roads" during a rookie initiation, Luck trotted onto the practice field for his first NFL training camp workout ? a light walkthrough that served as little more than a warmup act for Peyton Manning's hand-picked successor.

"It's always good to get out there with the offensive line, with the receivers, and it will be good to have a full-speed practice coming up this afternoon," Luck said after the morning session.

Thousands of fans are expected to attend Indy's first open practice Sunday afternoon at Anderson University, a Division III school located about 30 miles northeast of Indianapolis' west side headquarters.

Though players will not be in full pads, the new franchise quarterback will finally get a chance to dust off that strong right arm and get in sync with the receivers he's already been impressing.

"I think he's ahead of all of us," veteran Austin Collie said when he was asked about Luck's command of the offense.

Even more than the veterans?

"I think so," Collie added. "He's a smart individual, and he's got to know more. He's got to know what the receivers are doing, what the backs are doing, what the line is doing."

That's not all. Donnie Avery, now in his fifth NFL season but his first with the Colts, said he likes Luck's take-charge approach in the huddle.

Fans are wondering how long it will take Luck to start hitting all the right notes on the field.

While the Stanford grad has been billed as the most NFL-ready quarterback since Manning entered the league with the Colts in 1998, many forget that Manning's record-setting rookie season also included only three victories and a rookie record 28 interceptions.

So first-year coach Chuck Pagano and the veterans are all pleading for patience on the field.

The similarities between Manning and Luck are remarkable. Both had fathers who were NFL quarterbacks, finished as Heisman Trophy runner-ups and were taken No. 1 overall after sticking around for one more college season despite urging from the "experts" to leave school earlier.

And now they have something else in common: bad singing reviews.

Teammates panned Manning's rendition of "Rocky Top" in 1998, and Luck endured the same fate when he chose "Country Roads" after reporting to camp Saturday. Luck's father, Oliver, is the West Virginia athletic director, and punter Pat McAfee ? a Mountaineers alum ? jumped in to help Luck when his new teammates started booing.

Luck said he chose the song because it was the only one he knew the words to.

That didn't matter to the tough crowd.

"It was awful," Pagano said. "I'm glad he's not doing that for a living because he wouldn't have gotten the signing bonus he got. It was a great effort, though."

In this photo taken, Tuesday, July 24, 2012, a Druse man looks toward the nearby Syrian village of Jebata al-Khashab from an Israeli army post near the village of Bukata in the Golan Heights. Horrified by the carnage that's reached their doorstep, more and more Druse Arabs in the Golan Heights are turning against a Syrian regime to which they remained at least outwardly loyal throughout decades of Israeli occupation. (AP Photo/Tsafrir Abayov)

In this photo taken, Tuesday, July 24, 2012, Druse men walk through the village of Bukata in the Golan Heights near the border with Syria. (AP Photo / Tsafrir Abayov)

(AP) ? The raging civil war just across the cease-fire line in Syria is posing an uncomfortable political choice for the Druse people in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

Do they maintain their traditional loyalty to the government of Bashar Assad, whose family has vowed to take back the territory? Or should they support the burgeoning Arab revolt against Assad's harsh rule?

In the shifting sands of the Middle East, the Druse again find themselves a people caught in the middle.

In Druse villages close enough to hear the fighting, families and friends are divided between backers of the revolt and supporters of the regime. A Druse doctor predicted his people would demand Assad's downfall, while a butcher in a nearby town denounced the Syrian uprising as a foreign conspiracy.

Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. In 1981 it annexed the strategic plateau, 65 kilometers (40 miles) long and 20 kilometers (12 miles) wide, because militarily, it commands Israel's north. The international community has not recognized the Israeli annexation. In negotiations, Israel has offered to exchange the territory for full peace, but talks broke down a decade ago over exact borders and other issues.

The Druse residents of the Golan Heights were offered Israeli citizenship, but only a few accepted. Many assumed that someday the territory would revert to Syria, by peace or by war, and those who identified with Israel might be treated as traitors. Most Druse identified as Syrians and the older generation in particular found the offer of Israeli citizenship an affront.

The Druse ? there are 20,000 in the Golan Heights ? follow a secretive offshoot of Islam whose adherents live primarily in Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. Over the centuries, they have tried to keep to themselves, offering allegiance to whoever was in control of their territory.

The four main Golan Druse villages are near the cease-fire line with Syria. In the early weeks of the uprising against Assad last year, only a tiny minority of Golan's Druse would publicly support the rebels. Now those voices are getting stronger.

"Most of the people here cannot distinguish between Assad and their homeland. They are looking to him as the face of the homeland and waiting for him to liberate us from the (Israeli) occupation," said Ali Abu Awad, a doctor in the village of Bukata. "But these days, when they can see what Assad is doing there, the big lie has started to fall. I think they will demand the fall of Assad."

Over the past week, he said most people in Bukata have climbed nearby hills to watch the fighting nearby.

"It's a different feeling to see with your eyes. You feel very useless, very empty, to see this army demolishing the civilian population," Abu Awad said.

In nearby Majdal Shams, Assad supporters spoke out.

Hasan Fakhr Deen, a butcher, called the Syria conflict "a conspiracy of outside states."

He insisted that Syrians remained united and felt the nearby shelling and smoke across the border were legitimate attacks against "people who want to change the regime in Syria."

Besides its strategic importance, the Golan Heights are also a major source of water and recreation. Israelis flock there for hikes, an Israeli winery and the country's only ski resort.

The Druse are a part of that landscape, and Israeli tourists as well as soldiers frequent their restaurants.

Still, the Druse stay in touch with their Syria relatives and are sometimes allowed to cross for weddings, university studies and religious pilgrimages. Golan-grown apples are also annually transferred over land to Syria to help Druse farmers market their crop. Golan Druse who marry Syrian nationals automatically lose their right to live in the Golan, tearing families apart.

The bloody crackdown in Syria has led the Golan Druse to begin speaking more freely.

Mahmoud Amasha, a Bukata apple farmer and insurance agent, said he was "convinced that the number of people opposing this regime grows every day."

But he said divisions over Assad's popularity in Bukata have "cast a shadow over the people in this town."

Syria's Sunni majority makes up the backbone of the opposition, and minorities such as the Druse and Christians fear they will be marginalized ? or even targeted ? if Sunnis take over.

Assad and the ruling elite also belong to a minority sect, the Alawites, a Shiite offshoot. Assad's regime always pushed a secular ideology, which was seen as giving minorities a measure of protection.

Residents say demonstrations break out every few weeks, some in favor of the regime and some against. The divisions have even pitted family against family and friend against friend.

Three teenage girls walking through Bukata's central square held differing views, with two supporting Assad and one opposing him.

Ruba Amasha, 17, said the three have remained friends, but that is not always the case.

"For instance, a pro-Assad person will say 'hi' to a friend on the street, and if the other person's against (Assad), they'll just keep walking," she said.

Alaa Alwely, a driver, said the Syrian civil war would likely delay any chance of the Golan returning to Syria. Given what was happening across the border, he said he was fine with that.

"I've lived a respectful life here," he said. "I was born under occupation. I'm not sure if Syrian rule would be better or not."

It?s a difficult road no matter who you are after a divorce happens. Whether you are the person who initiated the split or the one who wanted it never to occur, here are some tips that will help you find that special somebody with less risk of getting hurt again.

Steps After Divorce:

1. Allow Yourself to Grieve ? It is an enormous shift to transition from married to single life. You likely have photographs, notes, cards and other items that remain with you. Give yourself permission to say farewell, even if the marriage is already finalized and over. Emotions usually don?t simply ?cut off? because you?ve signed on the line?allow yourself the loss.

2. Use your Supports ? As much as you might feel like crawling in a hole, and staying there for a while, it will do your mental state so much good if you share your feelings with others. Even just having a friend over for a movie and talking or a simple call.

3. Give it Time before Dating?- It is not uncommon for people to feel alone after a split, and seek out either former relational partners or begin new ones. Giving yourself space for reflection is important not only to nurture yourself, but also to prevent falling into dysfunctional patterns of connection.

4. Check your Thinking ? As soon as a breakup occurs, it?s natural to fall into incorrect thinking patterns like ?all men are cheaters? or ?women are all the same.? As time passes, really be sure to examine your thoughts so they are not affecting your future relationships negatively. For example, some people who might feel insecure about themselves or their attractiveness might have sex sooner than they would have otherwise with someone they normally wouldn?t have even dated.

5. Know What Went Wrong ? On the surface, these are the questions that could seem easy (he cheated), but in fact, there could be similar traits in all the people you are choosing that are ending poorly. Many people seek a professional here to prevent them from choosing ?the same person with a different face.? People tend to repeat patterns when they aren?t aware of them or ?don?t know how to halt them.

6. Set Boundaries with your Ex ? If you share children, this will become more difficult and require you to stay in touch?however, if you don?t have children, why would you continue contact? Doing this often sets you up for a dysfunctional reunion or a disruption in any new relationship you might try to form.

7. Use this as Opportunity ? Explore your interests that maybe you didn?t have time for previously, learn a new sport, and find ways to nourish yourself. Sitting at home will never make you feel better after a small time to grieve.

Consider These things Before Starting a New Relationship

1. Companionship is different than Dependency ? Know the difference. Often after a relationship, you may feel very vulnerable, lonely, and have lowered self-esteem. Choosing someone at this point may meet those temporary needs, but you will likely select someone you wouldn?t have if you were not feeling so needy.

2. The ?Whys? ?? ?Why are you seeking a relationship? If you are looking for a relationship for a quick fix to problems such as general unhappiness, finances, or even homemaking, this is likely not the right time for you.

The General Rule: You are ready to date when your previous partner is no longer always on your mind, you have worked out the patterns of why it went wrong, and you can say genuinely that you are happy on your own.?

Charlotte-area small business owners tell Obama - Charlotte Observer

DENVER Nicole Goolsby, 48, started her small business, the Cornelius, N.C.-based Rion Homes, 12 years ago after taking out a $15,000 loan on her credit card and setting up a desk in her bedroom.

She says she did not rely on the federal government for help ? reacting to recent comments by President Barack Obama that ?if you?ve got a business ? you didn?t build that; somebody else made that happen.?

?President Obama?s comments were an insult to the sweat and sacrifice that I have put into my business in an effort to build a better life for my children and my community,? Goolsby said Wednesday a ?We Did Build This? event sponsored the campaign for Obama?s GOP opponent, Mitt Romney.

?Believe me,? she said. ?The government has not built my business nor is government even helping my business.?

The Romney campaign held two ?We Did Build This? events Wednesday in North Carolina ? at the Denver Construction Company during the afternoon and an earlier gathering at Snoopy?s Hot Dogs in Raleigh. At the Denver event, four small business owners shared their experiences in building their companies and explained why they think Romney is a better candidate.

Ken Tucker, 47, owner of Denver Construction Co., said he had to borrow money against his home mortgage to make payroll. He said his tax dollars help pay for the roads that he and other small business owners use.

?We?re paying property taxes, fuel taxes,? Tucker said. ?How much more taxes do you want us to pay? I had forty-something employees, now I have twenty-three.?

There were two dozen events around the country Wednesday touting the ?We Did Build This? theme, according to Robert Reid, the North Carolina spokesman for Romney?s campaign. The tumult over Obama?s comments on small-business success shows no sign of fading, and the president is pushing back hard with new ads scheduled to run in North Carolina and other battleground states to counter Romney?s claims.

What the president said

In a Virginia rally earlier this month, Obama spoke about government?s supportive role in providing a stable environment in which businesses can thrive.

?Look,? the president said, ?if you?ve been successful, you didn?t get there on your own. ? Let me tell you something: There are a whole bunch of hard-working people out there. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.?

Since then, Obama says the ?you didn?t build that? phrase was taken out of context. But the Romney campaign maintains it shows the president is out of touch with the contributions of small businesses.

?Everyone has access to roads and bridges. What allowed these businesses to succeed is their risk taking, their sacrifices, their innovation,? said Reid, the state Romney campaign spokesman. ?They should be patted on the back ? not demonized for it.?

In an email to an Observer reporter, Jamie Crain, a spokeswoman for the North Carolina Democratic Party, called the ?We Did Build This? campaign events Wednesday a ?desperate attempt to change the topic from his failing record as Governor of Massachusetts, his ?business experience? outsourcing American jobs overseas and his continued refusal to be transparent with voters and release his tax returns. If Mitt Romney applied Romney Economics to the nation like he did in Massachusetts, it would hurt North Carolina?s small businesses and stifle their growth.?

Earlier this month, the Obama campaign held an event in Charlotte touting small businesses.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, North Carolina?s 786,759 small businesses represent 98 percent of all employers in the state. The Associated Press contributed to this article.

Senate hopeful Dewhurst leans on old-guard GOP

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? As tea party superstars smelling an upset close ranks around conservative insurgent candidate Ted Cruz, traditional Republican favorite David Dewhurst is leaning on his party's old guard.

The Texas lieutenant governor is hoping to regain the air of inevitability that once made him look like a slam-dunk in the race for U.S. Senate.

Dewhurst racked up another key endorsement on Thursday, appearing at a running-shoe shop in Austin with Texas Comptroller Susan Combs, who said the state has $6.1 billion saved in its rainy day fund because Dewhurst kept state lawmakers from raiding it.

"David Dewhurst, in the Senate, held the line in keeping that money set aside for the future," Combs said.

Cruz and Dewhurst square off Tuesday in a runoff election, with the winner considered the overwhelming favorite to prevail in November's general election.

Dewhurst has overseen the state Senate since 2003 from the powerful lieutenant governor's post. He has been endorsed by Gov. Rick Perry and most of the Texas GOP establishment in the race for the Republican nomination to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

He beat Cruz by 10 percentage points in the May 29 state primary but fell short of an outright majority in a field featuring nine Republican senate hopefuls.

Combs' nod came as state Sen. Dan Patrick, a Houston Republican, also endorsed Dewhurst. Patrick is a tea party favorite himself and has clashed frequently with the lieutenant governor, but he also got into a high-profile yelling match with Cruz during a recent radio interview. The race has become one of the nation's most-watched ? seen as a test of the tea party's grassroots prowess against mainstream Republicans in Texas who don't lose many elections: a Democrat has not won statewide office here since 1994.

But this time the challenge is coming from the far-right, and coming hard. Cruz was in Dallas on Thursday for a major tea party rally featuring U.S. Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Mike Lee of Utah, as well as radio host Glenn Beck and former U.S. Rep. from Texas, Dick Armey ? chairman of the grassroots group FreedomWorks.

Meanwhile, the Tea Party Express parked a bus doubling as a "mobile phone bank" in the Dallas suburb of Irving to get out the vote for Cruz.

Another major Cruz bash Friday in Houston was expected to feature former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. She had previously recorded a phone message to voters for Cruz but had not traveled to Texas on his behalf.

Cruz, the former state solicitor general, strikes a fiery, populist tone. The tea party also has targeted Dewhurst because, while he has overseen some of the most conservative legislatures in Texas history, he has also occasionally compromised with Democrats to approve key legislation.

Dewhurst also has a halting, at times uneasy speaking style. But he says he never reached out to national tea party leaders because he's been too focused on Texas issues.

"I'm comfortable that there are more Dewhurst voters in Texas than Cruz voters," Dewhurst said Thursday. "The challenge to both of us is turnout."

A court battle over redistricting maps pushed the Texas primary from Super Tuesday to May 29, which means the runoff is coming when many Texans may be on vacation. About 1.4 million people voted in the primary, but fewer than 1 million are likely to return for a second round of balloting.

Cruz has gotten millions of dollars from national conservative groups, including the Washington-based Club for Growth. Dewhurst, who has a personal fortune topping $200 million as the owner of an energy business, has lent his campaign more than $10 million. Both sides have flooded the airwaves statewide, with Dewhurst attacking Cruz as beholden to his out-of-state benefactors and Cruz branding the lieutenant governor as a two-faced moderate.

Cruz has vowed to win the runoff, saying his supporters are motivated enough to turn out no matter what.

"We're seeing very strong enthusiasm among our base. Not only voters, but volunteers who are block-walking, phone-banking and pouring their blood, sweat and tears into this campaign," said James Bernsen, a spokesman for the Cruz campaign.

Dewhurst is countering by campaigning with Perry the day before the election, visiting a San Antonio veterans center before heading to a joint fundraiser in Dallas.

But the lieutenant governor is also quietly mobilizing his own supporters. He's using networks of volunteers organized by groups across the state that have endorsed him, including the Texas Association of Business and the Texas Farm Bureau, which is especially strong in rural areas ? where Dewhurst largely beat Cruz handily during the primary.

Also Monday, Dewhurst will make his first visit to his campaign's major phone-banking operation in Dallas to fire-up his hardcore supporters. Perry will also be there as will the Republican third- and fourth-place finishers in the primary, former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and ex-NFL running back and ESPN commentator Craig James ? both of whom have since endorsed the lieutenant governor.

"They're not just endorsing us and 'see you later,'" said Dewhurst spokesman Matt Hirsch. "They're out there campaigning for us."

States with the most homes underwater

Julie Jacobson / AP file

No state has been hit harder by the housing downturn than Nevada. Between the end of 2006 and the end of 2011, home values have tanked nearly 60 percent, higher than any other state by 7.2 percentage points.

By Samuel Weigley & Michael Sauter, 24/7 Wall St.

The housing market is projected?to improve in the coming years -- albeit slowly. While we are a long way to full recovery, the signs are there. Indeed, according to a?CoreLogic report?released this month, the number of underwater mortgages has declined from 12.1 million, or 25.2 percent of all mortgages, at the end of 2011 to 11.4 million, or 23.7 percent of all mortgages, at the end of the first quarter of 2012.

24/7 Wall St.: America's sickest housing markets

Of course, the recovery isn?t even, and while the housing market in some states already may be improving, other states still have a long way to go before their housing markets recover. Based on?CoreLogic?s?report on negative equity for the first quarter of 2012, 24/7 Wall St. identified the 10 states with the highest percentage of homes with underwater mortgages. The data show that the states with the most negative equity are the ones most severely affected by falling home prices during the recession.

Since the housing bubble burst in 2006, home prices have fallen by 32.6 percent nationwide. In many cases, the decline in the value of a home was so steep that the amount of debt became worth more than home?s market value.

The amount of outstanding debt compared to total property value in these states is staggering. Nationwide, the value of all mortgaged property is $12.2 trillion. Outstanding debt on those properties is $8.6 trillion. In other words, 70.5 percent of the value of all homes is in debt. In five of the worst-off states, this relationship, known as the loan-to-value ratio, is 80 percent or more. In the case of Nevada, it is an unbelievable 114 percent. Negative equity in the state is more than $13 billion greater than total property value.

Of the 10 states with the highest percentage of mortgages with negative equity, nine have among the greatest declines in home value from the fourth quarter of 2006 to the fourth quarter of 2011. All of the top seven states with the largest housing price declines are on this list, including Nevada, where prices plummeted by nearly 60 percent during that time.

Local economic hardships usually coincide with falling home prices. For example, unemployment rates are exceptionally high in these states. Six of the states on our list have unemployment rates higher than the national average, including Nevada and California, which have the first and third highest rates in the country, respectively.

Many of the states with high negative equity also have a high percentage of homeowners on the brink of losing their investment. According to April data from CoreLogic, several of these states have among the highest percentage of homes that have been delinquent on their mortgage payments for 90 days or more. Three are in the top four, including Florida, where the rate was 16.8 percent in April.

24/7 Wall St.: The fastest growing cities in America

24/7 Wall St. reviewed CoreLogic?s Q1 2012?negative equity report?to identify?the states with the highest percentage of mortgages with negative equity. We measured this alongside?a state?s total property value, mortgage debt outstanding and total home equity. We also looked at the percentage of homes with near negative equity, or homes with the value less than 5 percent more than the debt owed. Because of sample size, seven states were excluded?from the results.

These states, which include Wyoming and Vermont, account for fewer than 5 percent of U.S.? total population. In addition to CoreLogic?s data, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed a variety of additional metrics. We looked at May 2012 unemployment rates provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and at median income, median home value and poverty rates from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2010. Declines in home value from the fourth quarter of 2006 through the fourth quarter of 2011 were provided?by Fiserv. Fourth-quarter 2011 delinquency (90+ days) and foreclosure rates are from CoreLogic. Forecast changes in home value by state are from Fiserv.

These are the states with the most homes underwater:

1. Nevada

  • ?Percent mortgages underwater:?61.2 percent
  • ?Total property value:?$93.39 billion (23rd lowest)
  • ?Mortgage debt outstanding:?$106.45 billion (21st highest)
  • ?Percent mortgages 90+ days delinquent:?12.1 percent (2nd highest)

No state has been hit harder by the housing downturn than Nevada. Between the end of 2006 and the end of 2011, home values have tanked nearly 60 percent, higher than any other state by 7.2 percentage points. In 2011 alone, home prices fell another 9.4 percent. This has left many Nevadans owing significantly more on their homes than they are worth. The average loan-to-value ratio of a Nevada home is 114 percent, 25 percentage points higher than Arizona?s 89 percent (the second highest). In May, 24/7 Wall St. reported that 71 percent of mortgages in the state?s largest city, Las Vegas, were underwater, with values declining 63.2 percent from their peak. The state?s unemployment rate is 11.6 percent, the highest of any state in the U.S., making it that much harder for many Nevadans and dampening hopes of a quick recovery.

2. Florida

  • ?Percent mortgages underwater:?45.1 percent
  • ?Total property value:?$777.34 billion (3rd highest)
  • ?Mortgage debt outstanding:?$684.97 billion (2nd highest)
  • ?Percent mortgages 90+ days delinquent:?16.8 percent (the highest)

Home prices in Florida were nearly cut in half between 2006 and 2011. By the end of the first quarter, there were more than 1.9 million negative equity mortgages in the state with another 168,000 near delinquency. Homeowners in the state owe about $685 billion in mortgage payments, more than any other state except for California. Florida?s unemployment rate of 8.6 percent is above the national average of 8.2 percent, but it still could help it get out of the mortgage mess quicker than states such as California and Nevada, which have much higher unemployment rates.

24/7 Wall St.: 10 brands that will disappear in 2013

3. Arizona

  • ?Percent mortgages underwater: 43.4 percent
  • ?Total property value: $249.17 billion (17th highest)
  • ?Mortgage debt outstanding: $221.71 billion (15th highest)
  • ?Percent mortgages 90+ days delinquent: 5.8 percent (20th highest)

While states such as Arizona helped fuel economic growth in the mid-2000s with rising home values and new construction, the housing market began to hollow by 2007 and 2008. Case-Schiller predicts that home prices in Arizona will fall 9 percent in 2012, more than any other state. But other signs are pointing to an improving housing market, albeit modestly. When 24/7 Wall St. looked at underwater mortgages in March, 48.3 percent of Arizona?s mortgages were underwater, the second-highest rate in the country and nearly five percentage points higher than a quarter later. Meanwhile, total property value has risen a modest $6 billion between the fourth quarter 2011 and the first quarter of 2012, while outstanding debt has fallen by about $4.5 billion.

4. Georgia

  • ?Percent mortgages underwater:?37.2 percent
  • ?Total property value:?$293.01 billion (15th highest)
  • ?Mortgage debt outstanding:?$246.52 billion (11th highest)
  • ?Percent mortgages 90+ days delinquent:?7.2 percent (8th highest)

In 2011 alone, home prices fell by approximately?12.7 percent in Georgia, more than any other state in the country. Measured from the end of 2006, home prices have plunged nearly 35 percent, and are projected to fall an additional 4.2 percent in 2012. More than 7 percent of homeowners with a mortgage are 90 days or more delinquent on their payments as of April, the eighth-highest rate in the country. In all, total outstanding mortgage debt comes to $246.5 billion, the equivalent of 84.1 percent of the total property value in the state. This is the fourth highest loan-to-value ratio in the country.

5. Michigan

  • ?Percent mortgages underwater:?35.6 percent
  • ?Total property value:?$193.15 billion (18th highest)
  • ?Mortgage debt outstanding:?$161.24 billion (18th highest)
  • ?Percent mortgages 90+ days delinquent:?5.5 percent (24th lowest)

Despite more than one in three homes with negative equity, there are some positive signs in Michigan. The state was the only one on the list with rising home prices in 2011, with prices increasing a modest 1.7 percent. Meanwhile, Michigan?s unemployment rate of 8.5 percent ranked 12th in the U.S. in May. This is quite?the improvement from the long period -- until June 2010 -- that Michigan held the dubious title of having the highest unemployment rate in the nation, topping out at more than 15 percent at the height of the recession.

US religious right presses anti-gay laws in Africa

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) ? Conservative U.S. Christian groups are setting up fronts in Africa to fight for anti-gay and anti-abortion legislation to promote their fundamentalist convictions, a report by a Boston research group said Tuesday.

It accuses evangelical stars such as Pat Robertson and Rick Warren as well as Catholic and Mormon groups of setting up institutions and campaigns in Africa that are "fanning the flames of the culture wars over homosexuality and abortion by backing prominent African campaigners and political leaders."

Reflecting that, the report from independent think tank Political Research Associates of Boston is called "Colonizing African Values: How the U.S. Christian Right is Transforming Sexual Politics in Africa."

Some of the Africans cited in the report as heading African organizations set up by the U.S. religious right maintain that they are just using funds from foreign friends who share similar beliefs.

Among them is Joseph Okia, nephew of President Yoweri Museveni in Uganda, where proposed legislation would invoke the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality."

"Definitely there is a link between conservative Christians in America and conservative Christian leaders in Uganda," Okia confirmed to the report's researchers. Okia spoke of "a close intellectual and mentoring relationship."

Several Africans and Americans named in the report could not immediately be reached for comment. A spokesman for Pastor Rick Warren said he was too busy to comment.

The report's main author, the Rev. Kapya Kaoma, said that while such evangelical groups are in the minority in the United States, they are able to punch way above their weight in Africa, where many oppose homosexuality.

Here, many believe the religious right's contentions that gay men are "recruiting" in schools, Kaoma said. Others believe the U.S. right's argument that overpopulation is a myth propagated by Western forces who support contraception and abortion.

And the ultraconservatives have access to powerful politicians, including the presidents of many countries.

"Those kind of lies, when presented in Africa, become factual, so we need to worry that they are misleading people with these lies," Kaoma, an Anglican priest from Zambia, said in a telephone interview from Boston.

Kaoma's report identifies groups belonging to a loose network of right-wing charismatic Christians. They include Pat Robertson's American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), the Catholic Church's Human Life International (HLI) and the Mormon-led Family Watch International. All have launched or expanded offices in Africa over the past five years.

Robertson's organization has spawned the Zimbabwe-based African Center for Law and Justice and the East African Center for Law and Justice in Kenya.

"By hiring locals as office staff, ACLJ and HLI in particular hide an American-based agenda behind African faces, giving the Christian Right room to attack gender justice and (the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual people) as a neocolonial enterprise imposed on Africans and obstructing meaningful critique of the U.S. right's activities," the report said.

Anti-gay laws passed in Burundi in 2009, Malawi in 2010 and Nigeria in 2011.

Uganda's so-called "Kill the Gays" law, which would levy the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality," was thought to have been defeated after Kaoma and Political Research Associates exposed the legislation's American instigators in 2009. But it was reintroduced in Uganda's Parliament this February.

That was a year after the killing of David Kato, of Sexual Minorities Uganda, who was found bludgeoned to death in his Kampala home.

Amnesty International has reported an increasing intolerance in Africa that has resulted in "harassment, discrimination, persecution, violence and murders" against homosexuals in Africa. The report said the new campaigns also have caused more oppression of women by restricting their reproductive freedoms.

The American Christian Rights' efforts have found fertile ground among many homophobic Africans, but they have not been as successful in pushing anti-abortion legislation, the report said.

Illegal abortions are performed without hindrance across most of sub-Saharan Africa, and no efforts are made to prosecute those involved, the report found.

Strong-arm efforts by the U.S. and EU governments and the United Nations to promote anti-discriminatory stances have backfired.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's threatened last year to withhold aid from countries that persecute sexual minorities. It was followed by a reversal to say U.S. policy is to empower sexual minority groups with funding, which provoked a backlash.

"The administration reinforced the conservative narrative that LGBT (sexual minority) groups and the West are flooding the continent with money to impose foreign sexual mores onto the continent," the report said.
