Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee Congratulates The Right Honourable Micha?lle Jean on the Unveiling of the Official Portrait at Rideau Hall

    OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 29, 2012) -

Editors Note: There is a photo associated with this press release.

Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee, offers her sincere congratulations to Right Honourable Micha?lle Jean on the unveiling of her official portrait to become part of the Crown Collection of the Official Residences. The official portrait of the Right Honourable Micha?lle Jean, was painted by Karen Bailey, an Ottawa artist.

Commenting from Istanbul, Turkey, Jiwani stated: "Her Excellency, The Right Honorable, Micha?lle Jean, has forged a lasting legacy for women and girls all across the world through her humanitarian and public service pursuits as the 27th Governor General of Canada. It is my distinct honor and privilege to congratulate Mme. Jean and Ms. Bailey, whose painting of Mme. Jean's will grace the Official Residence of Rideau Hall. As one of Canada's foremost icons of equality, empowerment and hope, Mme. Jean's legacy and contributions to our great country of Canada will be immortalized in the artistic masterpiece. Honorable Micha?lle Jean is an inspiration to me and millions of Canadian women and girls around the world and if her history is but a foreshadowing of her future - women's gender equality has a lifelong friend."

At the portrait unveiling event on Thursday, September 29th at Rideau Hall, Right Honourable Micha?lle Jean spoke about the inspiration behind the artists work: "The landscape that inspires me in our country and that is breathtaking, of infinite beauty, is the human landscape. The magnificent landscape of women and men of courage and heart; that is what the wonderful and profound Canadian artist Karen Bailey and I talked about for the official portrait. I could not see myself standing alone on the canvas. Simply because I never stood, nor walked alone on this wonderful journey across the country. It wasn't about me alone, never. It was always about those women and men, from all walks of life, showing us, from their knowledge and experience, the vast range of what is possible for us all, etching upon our memories the breadth of our aspirations, holding out a mirror that reveals the gap between what we are and what we aspire to be. It was also about the very creative, very socially engaged youth in motion, teaching us the power of the arts for action, arts for change; in other words: creativity and social innovation for better communities. We continue to support these young Canadians' transformative actions, through my governor general legacy project, The Micha?lle Jean Foundation."

The commissioning of official portraits of former governors general is a long-standing tradition dating back to 1898. The idea was initiated by Lady Minto-wife of then-Governor General Lord Minto-and became reality when it was formally adopted by the subsequent governor general, Lord Grey.

As custodian of the Official Residences and its collections, the National Capital Commission has the responsibility to manage the contract for the commissioning of governor general portraits.

Caroline at Coastcard: Poetry Plus: Writing Workshops (1 ...

I joined others at Gainsborough Community Library in Ipswich yesterday for a Creative Writing Workshop. We were considering the topic of 'plot', which is not something that crosses my path very often in my poetry endeavours, although it certainly has a bearing on narrative poems. It made me realise (again) just how fundamental the concept of 'story' is to our lives.

The ancient Greeks knew this all too well, with their epic ring cycles that would allow the same yarn to be narrated in fresh ways. A child's version of Homer's Odyssey captured my own imagination at a young age. I went on to study and teach Classical Civilisation. We also think of Beowulf and of countless other myths and legends that became part of the warp and weft of our human society. The New Testament parables, stories told for a purpose, rely heavily on narrative. Think of 'The Sower' or 'The Prodigal Son'. Journalists tell stories. Most of us do.

But how often do we employ story-telling techniques in our poems? Should we be telling more stories if it is these tales that help us to come together and forge connections? We were talking yesterday about 'martyrdom' (among other things) as a feature that is common to many well-loved tales.'The Chronicles of Narnia', which we cited by way of example, speak for themselves at one level but also probe the heights and depths of something more - the Christian story, of good over evil, of the laying down of life for others.

The employment of an extended metaphor has been recognised as a popular and successful poetry ploy in recent years. Epic is 'out' in the traditional sense - or is it? There have been exciting re-workings of the old sagas and tales, but archaic language and sentiment have largely been abandoned or, at least, re-cast. I am currently reading 'Now All Roads lead to France' by Matthew Hollis, about the life and last years of Edward Thomas. It is fascinating to read about the Georgian poets and how very different they were to the emerging Imagists. Edward Thomas had a great gift for sharing small insights into the world of nature with his readers. Of course, he often employed narrative along the way: think of 'The Owl'. Today we worry whether it is 'enough' for a poem simply to paint a picture. Our response has sometimes been to use poetry as a vehicle for (often political) change. Adjectives and adverbs are treated with extreme caution - sorry, with caution - but are we sometimes in danger of aspiring to an art that is losing touch with its recipients? Poets may be driven to write for any number of reasons, but I found it helpful yesterday to be reminded that 'plot' is occasionally a useful tool to select from the work(shop) box.

P.S. And in case you were wondering, my organic writing in the workshop yesterday focused on an orphan, a multi-cololoured explosion and a rift in the cliff face ...

    Time: Whenever suits you
    Cost: $395

    TIP: Avoid false joiners
Sometimes when you?re writing, it?s easy to get carried away and let your sentences go on, and on, and on. One way of allowing this to happen is to use false joiners. False joiners are words such as however, consequently, moreover, therefore, nevertheless, indeed and similarly. These words are sometimes used as conjunctions but in fact, they?re adverbs and can?t join two sentences together without some help.

Here?s an example of a sentence using a false joiner:

Rambo went home to get his umbrella, however, he couldn?t find it.

It?s actually two sentences: Rambo went home to get his umbrella. and He couldn?t find it.

Because however is technically not a conjunction, it shouldn?t be used to join these two sentences. But, if you do want to clearly link the two sentences, you can use however (or one of the words above). Just make sure you use a semicolon first:

Rambo went home to get his umbrella; however, he couldn?t find it.

    Student success ? Jocelyn Pride
We were thrilled to hear from Jocelyn Pride this week. She did our ONLINE COURSE: Travel Writing in 2011 and since then, has scored two overseas famils. She wrote this to us:

Very excited to just land my second major ?famil? [familiarisation tour]. The company that hosted me (and my husband) to go to Alaska in June has just confirmed a trip to Baja Mexico in January. Thank you Sydney Writers? Centre ? you keep proving anything is possible. This time last year I was only dreaming of being a travel writer.

Congratulations Jocelyn! We can?t wait to hear more about your writing successes.

    TIP: Principal or principle?
Principal and principle ? they?re often used interchangeably but they shouldn?t be as their meanings are quite different.

Principle, which is always a noun, means an accepted or professed rule of action or conduct. For example:

    He has strong moral principles.

It can also mean a fundamental, primary or general truth, or a fundamental doctrine. For example:

Our courses can teach you the principles of good writing.

Principal is an adjective but sometimes acts as a noun as well. It means the first or highest in rank, importance or value; the head of a school or college, or someone who takes a leading part in a play or ballet. For example:

The principal dancer stole the show with her performance.

It can also refer to a sum of money lent or invested. For example:

She was assured that there would be no risk to her principal.

So as you can see, there are a few different uses for just those two spellings. If you?re not sure which one to use, check your dictionary!

    Writing Bar
We?re a little pre-occupied with travel writing this week (must be the warmer weather), so we asked the wonderful Sue White to share her top three tips for travel writers.

We?re also featuring a guest post from kids? book author, Deborah Abela. As part of her blog tour, she dropped by Writing Bar to share her advice on Writing Ghost Stories for Kids.

The owners of this business have confused their message a bit. ?No obligation free quotes? suggests that quotes will not be obligation free! That?s possibly a quote you?d want to avoid. If they re-wrote the sentence so it reads ?Free quotes, no obligation?, they could avoid the confusion. Or maybe just insert a comma, ?No obligation, free quotes?.

They?re small, simple and rustic, but what writer wouldn?t want one? This collection of famous writers? retreats will no doubt inspire a writerly real-estate envy in many of you.

There?s also the rather luxurious cabin of Michael Pollan, which he built himself in the woods behind his home in Connecticut.

My new book Power Stories: The 8 stories you MUST tell to build an epic business (Wiley) will be released in a couple of weeks and I?ve had so many questions about how I got my book deal ? and how authors are supposed to promote their own books ? that I wrote it all down (of course)!

Affirmative action, rights cases await U.S. Supreme Court

(Reuters) - Affirmative action for minorities, human rights abuses and the constitutional authority for dogs to sniff out crime will top the U.S. Supreme Court's agenda when it returns to the bench on Monday. An even bigger issue, same-sex marriage, lurks on the horizon.

The new term marks the full court's first return to the public eye since June when Chief Justice John Roberts surprised many by joining four more liberal justices in a 5-4 decision that upheld nearly all of President Barack Obama's healthcare law.

The court will start with one of its most anticipated cases, Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum, and address for the second time the extent to which American judges are empowered to hear lawsuits over human rights atrocities abroad.

On October 10, it will hear perhaps the biggest case on the docket so far, Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, and weigh whether using race in undergraduate admissions to increase diversity is still acceptable under the U.S. Constitution.

"When you look at Kiobel and Fisher, and the possibility the court will visit the issues of gay marriage and voting rights, it's already shaping up to be a momentous term," said Ted Shaw, a professor at Columbia Law School and former director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

Some justices said over the summer break that the court would, as it normally does, move past the divisions that end a term, including this year over a tough Arizona immigration law.

Dissenting justices in that and the healthcare cases read parts of their opinions from the bench, signaling profound disagreement with the majorities.

The court often finds common ground, and last term it ruled unanimously nearly as often as not. But many closely watched cases still produce 5-4 ideological splits. The five more conservative justices were appointed by Republican presidents, and the four more liberal justices by Democratic presidents.

While Justice Anthony Kennedy is at the ideological center, Roberts' vote to uphold most of the Affordable Care Act was a forceful reminder of his capacity to put his own cast on the law. At age 57, he could do so for another quarter century.

"John Roberts enormously strengthened his administrative hand and legal influence in ruling as he did," said Douglas Kmiec, a constitutional law professor at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. "Now both sides probably believe they need to work for his support, and that's an enviable position for the chief justice."

The court already has accepted close to 40 cases for the new term, filling roughly half of its usual docket.

    RACE AS A FACTOR

In Kiobel, the court will again review the Alien Tort Statute, a long-obscure 1789 law that lawyers have used in the last three decades to challenge corporations' alleged aiding or acquiescing in foreign governments' abuse of their own people.

After hearing arguments in February, the court decided to hold a new hearing to address whether judges could hear such claims brought against anyone, not just corporations.

The case has drawn dozens of briefs from other interested parties. The Obama administration has argued that the law could be used, case-by-case, for claims of abuse that might interfere with U.S. foreign relations or respect for human rights.

In the affirmative action case, Texas' flagship university has for several years filled about three-quarters of its undergraduate class by granting automatic admission to students in the top 10 percent of their high-school classes.

While this "race-neutral" approach has boosted the number of black and Hispanic students because of the homogeneity of many high schools, Texas uses race as one factor to fill the rest of each class, with a goal of improving the educational experience.

This has been challenged, and changes in the Supreme Court's makeup may imperil the 2003 decision, Grutter v. Bollinger, that let universities take race into account to improve diversity.

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who in that case endorsed race-based admissions at the University of Michigan law school, retired in 2006 and was replaced by the more conservative Justice Samuel Alito.

In addition, Justice Elena Kagan, who was U.S. solicitor general before joining the court in 2010, has recused herself. This could make it hard for Texas to win more than four votes. A decision voiding the program would likely apply, under a different law, to private universities.

Also on the docket are two "dog sniff" cases from Florida that test the boundary of Fourth Amendment protection against illegal searches, and which the court will take up on October 31.

One, Florida v. Jardines, concerns whether a homeowner's privacy was violated when a trained narcotics dog named Franky was allowed to walk near a home, and appeared to correctly detect a marijuana odor from inside. Another, Florida v. Harris, concerns an "alert" given by another dog named Aldo while being led around a truck that contained methamphetamine ingredients.

    SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

All of these cases could well be dwarfed in public attention should the Supreme Court review any or all of a half-dozen cases concerning same-sex marriages.

Several address the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, which requires the government to deny benefits such as Social Security payments to gay and lesbian couples. even if they live in states that allow same-sex marriage.

A federal appeals court in Boston said that requirement should not stand. Paul Clement, a former U.S. solicitor general who last term argued against the healthcare law, represents defenders of DOMA while his opponent in the healthcare case, Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, wants DOMA to be invalidated.

Also awaiting review is a lower-court decision striking down California's ban on same-sex marriage, known as Proposition 8.

The Supreme Court is expected to announce this fall whether it will accept any of these cases. Decisions would likely come by the end of June, before the court's usual summer recess.

Meanwhile, the court may also weigh the constitutionality of a provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that requires states with histories of discrimination to get U.S. Department of Justice permission before changing election procedures.

"We're seeing an increase in voting suppression," said Scot Powe, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin and former clerk for Justice William O. Douglas. "If they take a Voting Rights Act case, the betting money is that they will invalidate the preclearance provision. That's a big deal."

    Stingray photobomb goes viral

    (Reddit)

A photo of three seemingly terrified women being greeted by a giant stingray is making the rounds online.

The "photobomb," posted to Reddit.com on Wednesday, appears to show a man in the water behind the women lift the stingray onto their backs just as the photo was taken.

Several commenters pointed out that the undated photo was likely taken at Stingray City, a popular tourist destination in the Cayman Islands where swimmers and snorkelers are encouraged to feed ground squid to the rays from a sandbar.

"Come kiss a stingray with us this year!" an offer on boat charter service StingrayCityTrips.com reads. "Standing in only three feet of water you will be surrounded by more than two dozen friendly stingrays."

According to Cayman.org, the spot has become populated with rays because local fishermen dispose fish offal there. The site in Grand Cayman's North Sound became popular in the late 1980s after it was featured in Skin Diver magazine.

The site also offers some helpful tips on how to "survive" a stingray trip, including:

If you dive or deep snorkel, wear a "skin" or light wet-suit to protect from stingray "hickies." Stingrays cannot see what they are feeding upon and they eat by sucking the food into their mouths between two hard dental plates. Sometimes they can get confused by all the feeding going on, and since they don't feed by sight, they just start sucking as they approach the food source (divers).

Remember, the ray hunts by sense of smell so you can lead a ray around for quite a while with just one piece of bait?actually just long enough to get bushwhacked by another ray coming in from another angle.

Many folks just let go of the bait the first time or two?the ray misses the fish and it gets taken by one of the ever-present Cayman Piranha. These fish are actually the real threat here, they can come and give you a rather sharp bite on the finger to help encourage you to give them the bait.

Check out these stingray tips from Mike Rowe on The Discovery Channel:

According to Conaway, ?When you look into the eyes of a 5-year-old?Bangladeshi boy who now has HIV as a result of being used as a sex?slave, or of a handicapped 11-year-old Thai girl who has lived in the?back of a van for years as part of a mobile brothel, or even of the?father who was sold the fake promise of a better job and then beaten?into slavery ? these moments leave imprints on your being, they make?you realize what?s worth fighting for.?

Conaway, who is deemed by many as the ?MMA fighter who fights human?trafficking,? has participated in many human trafficking conferences?including the 2012 ?Slavery No More? Conference in Los Angeles, the?2012 ?Not For Sale? Asia Pacific Forum in the Philippines, and he was?the only American at the 2012 Human Trafficking Roundtable in?Chittagong, Bangladesh. Conaway was also invited to speak at the 2012?International Symposium on Combating Human Trafficking in Bandung,?Indonesia due to his advocacy work.

Conaway went on to say, ?We need penal reform, more sustainable?business models and education, deeper collaborations, more
psychologists and reintegration specialists?the list goes on. People?have referred to me as the fighter who fights human trafficking, but?the true warriors are the ones out there battling this each day. The?more involved I become, the more I see how my MMA training was?preparation for this battle.?

Conaway has spoken extensively on the topic of human trafficking in?villages throughout Bangladesh and has expressed in several media?interviews that his fight is now outside of the cage and for the?attainment of basic human rights for the world?s most vulnerable?populations.

The accomplished author also garners attention for the cause through?his writing. Conaway has written many features on the topic and was?even given rare access to the dangerous shipbreaking yards of?Chittagong for an essay titled ?Of Ships and Men? which was published?in July by The Good Men Project.

Cameron Conaway ? mixed martial artist, human rights activist and?acclaimed author, has come to be known as the ?Warrior Poet.? He?shares intimate details of his life?s struggles both in and out of the?cage in his compelling autobiography ?Caged: Memoirs of a Cage?Fighting Poet? and has championed many causes through his writing.

?Caged: Memoirs of a Cage Fighting Poet? has received numerous awards?including the ?2012 Reviewers Choice Award? and can be purchased at?Amazon.com. ?Famed MMA broadcaster Mauro Ranallo is the voice behind?the audio version of the book, which will be released in the coming?months. Is Your Home's Front Door Making a Good First Impression ...

Irwin Weiner ASID?- I don't think we notice our front doors very much while we're in the thick of designing and decorating the rest of our homes. But this is a certainty: Other people notice your front door, and it makes either a positive or a sour first impression.

A realtor just told me that the care and upkeep of each element of your home tells others whether or not you take good care of yourself, your belongings, and your home's general upkeep. A front door with peeling paint, a cracked window, faded varnish, or bad door hardware will give everyone the wrong signal when they visit you.

I picked some of my favorite contemporary front doors from an excellent UK supplier, Urban Front Ltd. Click on each image for more product information. Their doors are steel-reinforced hardwood, and you can also use this company for garage doors and interior doors. Some of the interior doors come with matching frames built with acoustic seals on all four sides and concealed or pivot hinges. A great resource to put into your Home Improvement file!

In today's featured video, we go behind the scenes at Urban Front and hear the designers talking about what goes into their products.

Oil drops below $92 on gloomy economic outlook

Oil prices fell Monday, dragged down by worries about weaker economic growth around the world.

Benchmark crude dropped $1.23 to $91.66 around midday Monday in New York. Oil fell more than 6 percent last week.

In London, Brent crude was down $1.89 to $109.53 on the ICE Futures exchange.

The latest dose of gloomy economic news game from Germany, where the Ifo index of business confidence fell for the fifth month in a row. Germany is an economic powerhouse, but 43 percent of its exports go to its euro partners. And growth is stalling across the other 16 countries in the eurozone.

Slower economies mean less demand for oil, pushing prices down.

The lower oil prices are somewhat positive for drivers in the U.S. The average price for gasoline slipped about 2.5 cents over the weekend to $3.808 per gallon, according to a daily survey from AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service.

Other futures prices on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Natural gas fell 3 cents to $2.85 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil fell 4 cents to $3.08 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline fell 8 cents to $2.82 per gallon.
