SHIP BOTTOM, N.J. (AP) ? Forget distinctions like tropical storm or hurricane. Don't get fixated on a particular track. Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow, say officials who warned millions in coastal areas to get out of the way.

"We're looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people," said Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As Hurricane Sandy barreled north from the Caribbean ? where it left nearly five dozen dead ? to meet two other powerful winter storms, experts said it didn't matter how strong the storm was when it hit land: The rare hybrid storm that follows will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

"This is not a coastal threat alone," said Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "This is a very large area."

President Barack Obama was monitoring the storm and working with state and locals governments to make sure they get the resources needed to prepare, administration officials said.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency Saturday as hundreds of coastal residents started moving inland and the state was set to close its casinos. New York's governor was considering shutting down the subways to avoid flooding and half a dozen states warned residents to prepare for several days of lost power.

Sandy weakened briefly to a tropical storm Saturday but was soon back up to Category 1 strength, packing 75 mph winds. It was about 275 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and moving northeast at 14 mph as of 2 a.m. Sunday. Forecasters said the storm was spreading tropical storm conditions across the coastline of North Carolina, and they were expected to move up the mid-Atlantic coastline late Sunday. Experts said the storm was most likely to hit the southern New Jersey coastline by late Monday or early Tuesday.

Governors from North Carolina, where heavy rain was expected Sunday, to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Delaware ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal communities by 8 p.m. Sunday.

Christie, who was widely criticized for not interrupting a family vacation in Florida while a snowstorm pummeled the state in 2010, broke off campaigning for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in North Carolina on Friday to return home.

"I can be as cynical as anyone," Christie said in a bit of understatement Saturday. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

The storm forced the presidential campaign to juggle schedules. Romney scrapped plans to campaign Sunday in the swing state of Virginia and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. First lady Michelle Obama canceled an appearance in New Hampshire for Tuesday, and Obama moved a planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm. He canceled appearances in Northern Virginia on Monday and Colorado on Tuesday.

In Ship Bottom, just north of Atlantic City, Alice and Giovanni Stockton-Rossini spent Saturday packing clothing in the backyard of their home, a few hundred yards from the ocean on Long Beach Island. Their neighborhood was under a voluntary evacuation order, but they didn't need to be forced.

"It's really frightening," Alice Stockton-Rossi said. "But you know how many times they tell you, 'This is it, it's really coming and it's really the big one' and then it turns out not to be? I'm afraid people will tune it out because of all the false alarms before ... (but) this one might be the one."

A few blocks away, Russ Linke was taking no chances. He and his wife secured the patio furniture, packed the bicycles into the pickup truck, and headed off the island.

What makes the storm so dangerous and unusual is that it is coming at the tail end of hurricane season and the beginning of winter storm season, "so it's kind of taking something from both," said Jeff Masters, director of the private service Weather Underground.

Masters said the storm could be bigger than the worst East Coast storm on record ? the 1938 New England hurricane known as the Long Island Express, which killed nearly 800 people. "Part hurricane, part nor'easter ? all trouble," he said. Experts said to expect high winds over 800 miles and up to 2 feet of snow as far inland as West Virginia.

And the storm was so big, and the convergence of the three storms so rare, that "we just can't pinpoint who is going to get the worst of it," said Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Officials are particularly worried about the possibility of subway flooding in New York City, said Uccellini.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to prepare to shut the city's subways, buses and suburban trains by Sunday, but delayed making a final decision. The city shut the subways down before last year's Hurricane Irene, and a Columbia University study predicted that an Irene surge just 1 foot higher would have paralyzed lower Manhattan.

Up and down the Eastern Seaboard and far inland, officials urged residents and businesses to prepare in big ways and little.

On Saturday evening, Amtrak began canceling train service to parts of the East Coast, including between Washington, D.C., and New York. Airlines started moving planes out of East Coast airports to avoid damage and adding flights out of New York and Washington on Sunday in preparation for flight cancellations on Monday.

The Virginia National Guard was authorized to call up to 500 troops to active duty for debris removal and road-clearing, while homeowners stacked sandbags at their front doors in coastal towns. At a Home Depot in Virginia Beach, employee Dave Jusino said the store was swamped with customers.

"We have organized chaos, is what I call it," Jusino said. "We organize a group of 10 associates, give them certain responsibilities and we just separate the lines, organize four customers at a time, load up their cars and get them out the door and then take the next customers."

Utility officials warned rains could saturate the ground, causing trees to topple into power lines, and told residents to prepare for several days at home without power. "We're facing a very real possibility of widespread, prolonged power outages," said Ruth Miller, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

Warren Ellis, who was on an annual fishing pilgrimage on North Carolina's Outer Banks, didn't act fast enough to get home. Ellis' 73-year-old father managed to get off uninhabited Portsmouth Island near Cape Hatteras by ferry Friday. But the son and his camper got stranded when high winds and surf forced the ferry service to suspend operations Saturday.

"We might not get off here until Tuesday or Wednesday, which doesn't hurt my feelings that much," said Ellis, 44, of Amissville, Va. "Because the fishing's going to be really good after this storm."

Last year, Hurricane Irene poked a new inlet through the island, cutting the only road off Hatteras Island for about 4,000.

In Connecticut, the Naval Submarine Base in Groton prepared to install flood gates and pile up sandbags to protect against flooding while its five submarines remain in port through the storm.

Lobsterman Greg Griffen in Maine wasn't taking any chances; he moved 100 of his traps to deep water, where they are less vulnerable to shifting and damage in a storm.

"Some of my competitors have been pulling their traps and taking them right home," said Griffen. The dire forecast "sort of encouraged them to pull the plug on the season."

In Muncy Valley in northern Pennsylvania, Rich Fry learned his lesson from last year, when Tropical Storm Lee inundated his Katie's Country Store.

In between helping customers picking up necessities Saturday, Fry was moving materials above the flood line. Fry said he was still trying to recover from the losses of last year's storm, when he estimates he lost $35,000 in merchandise.

"It will take a lot of years to cover that," he said.

Christie's emergency declaration will force the shutdown of Atlantic City's 12 casinos for only the fourth time in the 34-year history of legalized gambling here. The approach of Hurricane Irene shut down the casinos for three days last August.

Atlantic City officials said they would begin evacuating the gambling hub's 30,000 residents at noon Sunday, busing them to mainland shelters and schools.

Tom Foley, Atlantic City's emergency management director, recalled the March 1962 storm when the ocean and the bay met in the center of the city.

"This is predicted to get that bad," he said.

Eighty-five-year-old former sailor Ray Leonard said if he had loved ones living in the projected landfall area, he would tell them to leave. Leonard knows to heed the warnings.

He and two crewmates in his 32-foot sailboat, Satori, rode out 1991's infamous "perfect storm," made famous by the Sebastian Junger bestseller of the same name, before being plucked from the Atlantic off Martha's Vineyard, Mass., by a Coast Guard helicopter.

"Don't be rash," Leonard said in a telephone interview Saturday from his home in Fort Myers, Fla. "Because if this does hit, you're going to lose all those little things you've spent the last 20 years feeling good about."

Romney woos Florida early vote; Obama eyes N.H.

LAND O'LAKES, Fla. (AP) ? Juggling politics and storm preparations, Mitt Romney dangled a plea for bipartisanship before early voters in Florida on Saturday as Barack Obama worked to nail down tiny New Hampshire's four electoral votes. Both campaigns scrambled to steer clear of a most unlikely October surprise, a superstorm barreling up the East Coast.

With just 10 days left in an extraordinarily tight race, Hurricane Sandy had both campaigns ripping up carefully mapped-out itineraries as they worked to maximize voter turnout and avoid any suggestion that they were putting politics ahead of public safety.

The campaigns pressed every possible angle in search of advantage ? even paying attention to punctuation.

Obama's campaign signs for months have said: "Forward." Now they say: "Forward!"

Romney, who has been striking a more moderate tone as he courts women and independents in the campaign's home stretch, campaigned across Florida with a pledge to "build bridges" with the other party.

He coupled that message with digs at Obama for "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" and advancing an agenda that lacks vision. Noting that Obama supporters like to chant "four more years" at the president's campaign rallies, Romney picked up on his crowd's own chant at the Pensacola Civic Center and said: "I like '10 more days' a lot better."

His warm-up act was more biting: Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told the crowd that Obama was advancing "the ideas of countries that people come here to get away from." Pressed later on what countries he was referring to, Rubio said, "any big-government country in the world" and specifically referred to Mexico and Latin America.

Obama hauled his campaign to New Hampshire, where he told volunteers at a Teamsters hall in Manchester that: "We don't know how this thing is going to play out. These four electoral voters right here could make all the difference."

It takes 270 electoral votes to win the election. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. The rest lie in nine contested states that are too close to call, New Hampshire among them.

The president adjusted his campaign speech at a Nashua rally to appeal to voters in low-tax New Hampshire, hammering Romney for raising taxes and fees as governor of neighboring Massachusetts.

Obama accused Romney of running in Massachusetts on a pledge to lower taxes, then making life more expensive for the middle class after taking office.

"All he's offering is a big rerun of the same policies," Obama told a crowd of 8,500 gathered at an outdoor rally on an unseasonably warm October day.

The president said Romney even raised fees in Massachusetts on obtaining a birth certificate, "which would have been expensive for me." It was a veiled reference to opponents of the president who have incorrectly said he was born outside the United States. Copies of his birth certificate have been in high demand.

The candidates worked to lock down every possible early vote without intruding on emergency preparations as the storm's expected track looked to affect at least four battleground states: North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire.

Romney scrapped plans to campaign in Virginia on Sunday, and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. At a rally in Kissimee, Fla., he urged supporters to keep those in the storm's path "in your mind and in your hearts."

"You know how tough hurricanes can be," he told the Floridians.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., to allow local officials there to focus on disaster preparedness and local security concerns.

But he went ahead with an appearance in Lynchburg, which is inland. Biden said Romney and Ryan are fleeing from their record to appear more moderate than they are. They "are counting on the American people to have an overwhelming case of amnesia."

Plans for son Beau Biden, the Delaware attorney general, to join his father in Virginia were scrapped when he was called up by the National Guard to help with the storm.

Obama canceled Monday appearances in Prince William County, Virginia on Monday, and Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday so he could monitor Hurricane Sandy as it moves ashore. He did move up his planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm and planned a Monday stop in Youngstown, Ohio, before returning to the White House.

En route to New Hampshire, Obama held an airborne conference call with administration officials about the federal government's role in minimizing storm damage and a ensuring speedy recovery effort.

Campaign spokesman Jennifer Psaki said the Obama team was continuing to promote early voting as something that provides flexibility for busy families, but she added that with the storm headed for shore, "safety comes first, and that's the case with early voting as well."

Romney's trip to Florida, with three events across the state, was timed to coincide with the first day of in-person early voting in a state that went for Obama four years ago and where 29 electoral votes are up for grabs this time. Both campaigns already have been working furiously to gain the advantage in the state's vote-by-mail program, an area where Republicans typically have been stronger.

"I need you to vote early!" Romney told supporters in Land O'Lakes.

Republican Rep. Paul Ryan worked his way across rainy, chilly Ohio, on a two-day bus trip, with his family in tow. At a factory in New Philadelphia, Ryan stressed the hit that manufacturing industries have taken over the last four years and promised more coal jobs, natural gas jobs and increased military spending if Romney is elected.

Speaking to more than 1,000 supporters on the factory floor at Gradall Industries, Ryan told voters: "You know it's you. You know what you have in front of you. You know your responsibility."

Campaign 2012 was serious business, with so little time left and the storm complicating the end game, but Ryan's children helped to lighten the tone. His 7-, 9- and 10-year-olds scampered between parts bins and heavy chains at the factory.

Nine-year-old Charlie waved the peace sign and mugged for cameras, prompting his mother, Janna Ryan, to shake her head and declare, "I don't know where he gets it. It's kind of crazy."

During a later stop at a bakery in Circleville, Ohio, 10-year-old daughter Liz told the bakery clerk that her dad was "sugar-free except for doughnuts and ice cream."

"And apple-fritters," Ryan agreed.

Obama, for his part, made a stop at the Common Man Merrimack, a restaurant where he toasted patrons with a Common Man Ale, saying: "To voting. To America. Doesn't matter what party."

The campaigns and their allies kept up a steady stream of TV and radio ads in the battleground states. The right-leaning Americans for Job Security made a rare purchase of Philadelphia airtime, amounting to $1.2 million, for pro-Romney ads. While a few independent groups have tried to make Pennsylvania competitive for Romney, neither Obama nor Romney has devoted ad resources to the state, which is expected to go for Obama.

(AP) ? Victims of Myanmar's latest explosion of Muslim-Buddhist violence fled to already packed displacement camps along the country's western coast as a top U.N. official said Sunday the unrest has forced more than 22,000 people from their homes.

Wooden boats carrying some of those on the move arrived outside the state capital, Sittwe. They trudged to the nearby Thechaung camp, a place already home to thousands of Rohingya Muslims who took refuge there after a previous wave of violence in June.

"I fled my hometown Pauktaw on Friday because there is no security at all," said 42-year-old fisherman Maung Myint, who arrived on a boat carrying 40 other people, including his wife and six children. "My house was burned to ashes and I have no money left."

Another Muslim refugee said she fled her village, Kyaukphyu, on Thursday after attackers set her home on fire.

"We don't feel safe," said 40-year old Zainabi, a fish-seller who left with her two sons, aged 12 and 14. "I wish the violence would stop so we can live peacefully."

Human Rights Watch released dramatic satellite imagery of Kyaukphyu on Saturday showing a vast, predominantly Rohingya swath of the village in ashes. The destruction included more than 800 buildings and floating barges.

Myanmar's government has put the death toll at 67 over the last week, saying 95 more people were injured from Sunday through Thursday in seven townships in Rakhine state.

The casualty figures have not been broken down by ethnic group, but Human Rights Watch said the Rohingya had suffered the brunt of the violence. The New York-based rights group also said the true death toll may be far higher, based on witness accounts and the government's history of minimizing news that might reflect badly on it.

Border Affairs Minister Lt. General Thein Htay traveled to the affected areas with the U.N. Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar, Ashok Nigam.

Nigam said 22,587 were displaced and they included both Muslims and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, but he gave no breakdown.

Some 4,600 homes were also destroyed, according to the U.N, which said in a separate statement that it had begun distributing emergency food and shelter supplies with its humanitarian partners to refugees in urgent need of help.

The latest unrest pushes the total displaced to nearly 100,000 since clashes broke out in June.

Speaking to The Associated Press while visiting Thechaung camp, Nigam said getting aid to the new wave of displaced will be a challenge as some fled on boat and others have sought refuge on isolated hilltops.

"The situation is certainly very grave and we are working with the government to provide urgent aid to these people," he said.

Ill will between Muslims and Buddhists in Rakhine state goes back decades and has its roots in a dispute over the Muslim Rohingya's origins. Although many Rohingya have lived in Myanmar for generations, they are seen as foreign intruders who came from Bangladesh to steal scarce land.

Today, the Rohingya also face official discrimination, a policy encouraged by Myanmar's previous military regimes to enlist popular support among other groups. A 1984 law formally excluded them as one of the country's 135 ethnicities, meaning most are denied basic civil rights and deprived of citizenship.

Neighboring Bangladesh, which also does not recognize the Rohingya as citizens, says thousands of Rohingya refugees have also sought to flee there by boat. Its policy, however, is to refuse them entry.

Rights groups say Myanmar's failure to address the root causes of the crisis means the situation may only get worse.

In June, ethnic violence in Rakhine killed at least 90 people and destroyed more than 3,000 homes. About 75,000 people, mostly Rohingya, have been living in refugee camps since then. Curfews have been in place in some areas since the earlier violence and were extended this past week.

"It is critically important that the government ensures that the rule of law prevails, prevents any further spreading of this violence and continues to communicate strong messages of harmony," Nigam said in a statement later Sunday.

"The violence, fear and mistrust is contrary to the democratic transition and economic and social development that Myanmar is committed to," Nigam said. "It should not become an impediment to progress."

This Week in Social Media Law: Who's Gonna Log You Out When ...

Welcome to my weekly roundup of issues at the intersection of social media and the law. In this edition we look at the legal ramifications of using Web-based images in blog posts, managing digital assets from beyond the grave, EU criticism of Google?s privacy policy, efforts to legalize online poker, a government report calling for more regulation in the mobile industry, and a Canadian lawsuit that redefines employee privacy on company-owned computers. Here goes:

Web images, blog posts, and the law:

Bloggers, take note: just because you can copy and paste a picture from Google images doesn?t mean you should. Because ?freely available? doesn?t mean free, explains attorney Travis Crabtree at Looper Reed & McGraw: ?Not only is simply copying something from the web a moral issue, it can get you into legal trouble.? Fortunately, there are a number of ways to obtain the legal rights to use photos in your blog posts. Unless defending a copyright infringement lawsuit is high on your bucket list. (Looper Reed & McGraw)?

Who will log me out when I?m gone?

Toto, I don?t think we?re in the 20th century any more... Do you know what will happen to your digital assets?when you?re no longer around to sign on and shut them down? It?s a growing concern, and one that could have significant financial repercussions for family and business partners, writes attorney Michael Brennan. Consider the increasing number of bank statements, bills, tax returns, and other financial documents you receive solely in digital form. Your email, online shopping, and social media accounts. PayPal, online banking, credit cards, bill pays. What to do? A good first step is a power of attorney that allows other to tend to your affairs. But it?s not the only one. (The Virtual Attorney)?

Europe to Google: you?ve got four months:

European authorities released their report on Google?s privacy policy and associated practices this week, write Kolvin Stone and James Drury-Smith of law firm Orrick. The report, prepared by one of the EU?s toughest data protection regulators, the French Commission nationale de l?informatique et des libert?s, is highly critical of Google?s policy. But it isn?t all bad news for the Internet search giant, which escaped fines and sanctions, and was given four months to adapt their privacy policy to European standards. Watch this space. (Orrick)?

C?mon baby, Daddy needs a new poker law:

Betting on internet poker in the near future? The odds are getting better (but not by much). Senators Harry Reid and Jon Kyl released this week a draft of their online poker bill, mysteriously named the ?Internet Gambling Prohibition, Poker Consumer Protection, and Strengthening UIGEA Act of 2012.? The bill proposes legalizing internet poker at the federal level, creating an Office of Online Poker Oversight to regulate the industry, and allowing states and Indian tribes to opt in and affirmatively choose to participate in the program. Sound too good to be true? It may be: the bill in its current form is likely to face steep opposition from a number of parties, including states considering their own internet poker laws. But even if this version doesn?t pass, it?s an important first step for the future of online gaming. (Ifrah Law)?

GAO calls for greater regulation of location data in mobile industry:

The Government Accountability Office has released a report?calling for more federal regulation of the way that mobile industry companies collect and use location data. According to the report, users generally don?t know how the companies and third parties are using their data, or that they could be exposed to increased risks, such as identity theft and unauthorized police surveillance. Recommended actions include industry codes of conduct and FTC guidance for mobile companies (BuckleySandler)?

Canadian employees entitled to privacy on work computers:

Canada?s Supreme Court has ruled in R. v. Cole that employees ?may reasonably expect privacy in the information stored on their work-issued computers.? The decision found that workplace policies do not eliminate constitutionally protected privacy rights. For Terri Susan Zurbrigg and Greg Sim (Field Law), the ruling nevertheless demonstrates the importance of computer use policies for establishing ?the rules of the game? for employee use of workplace technology. This isn?t the final word on the subject, write Andrea Raso Amer and Eric Sherbine (from Fraser Milner Casgrain): the defendant did not challenge his employer?s actions, so the court did not look at employer rights to monitor computers used by employees. (Osler) (Field Law) (FMC)?

Many of these. Not a bad view! :)

I never wanted to leave this pool!

There were some kids in this pool but there was also a separate keiki pool, so it was a bit calmer in the main pool.

Close up of one of the fountains.

Paul and Kate have a timeshare at the Kauai Marriott Resort and the end of their vacation overlapped the beginning of ours. They invited me one day to go hang out at the resort pool one day so I drove over. Little did I know that this pool is the largest single-level outdoor pool in the state of Hawaii! It was so beautiful! And HUGE!

Paul and Kate rented one of the cabanas by the pool. These were like big comfy beds. The one they got was partially shaded, which was good because we?re all pretty prone to sunburning. We spent the day drinking fruity drinks and playing in the pool, with only a brief interruption when we walked over the beach for a while. What a great way to spend the day! I haven?t spent much time at resorts on Kauai because we always rent houses and condos when we stay there, so this place knocked my socks off.

John Birch Society protests Belfast's environmental affiliation ...

BELFAST, Maine ? The lunchtime crowd walking downtown on Wednesday may have wondered what ICLEI is and why it needed to be kicked out of town, as banners held on all four corners of the intersection of Main and High streets urged be done.

Protesters from the John Birch Society, a conservative group formed in 1958 to push for limited government and personal freedoms, said that the city was a member of the International Council on Local Environmental Initiatives. That group advocates for municipal policies that reduce energy consumption and mitigate climate change.

The John Birch Society protesters ? about a dozen in all ? also drew a connection between ICLEI and the United Nations? Agenda 21, a land-use planning initiative.

But it turns out the city is not a member of ICLEI.

A city committee, the Belfast Climate and Energy Committee, joined ICLEI and paid the $600 annual dues a few years ago to get information about how to reduce energy consumption in municipal buildings and promote similar strategies for residences and businesses, Belfast Assistant Planner James Francomano said Wednesday.

Roger Lee, a three-term city councilor seeking a fourth term, was a member of that committee and said Wednesday it is essentially defunct. The city stopped paying dues to ICLEI in 2010, but the organization?s website still lists Belfast as a member.

Hal Shurtleff of Boston, a regional field director of the John Birch Society who was among the protesters, said he concluded that Belfast was a member by reviewing ICLEI?s website. Wednesday?s protest was still valid, he said after the banners were taken down, because ICLEI is part of a larger effort to limit personal freedom.

?ICLEI is one tentacle? of other, larger efforts to impose limits on personal freedom, he said.

Two women holding the banners joined Shurtleff in denouncing ICLEI, saying the organization wanted to prevent people from purchasing certain kinds of vehicles and ending single residences because of their impact on climate change. Shurtleff said climate change was a myth.

Shurtleff is scheduled to present information about Agenda 21 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Belfast Free Library.

City officials contacted ICLEI Wednesday to ask that Belfast be removed from the list of members.

Lee expressed dismay that ICLEI was cast as a villain.

?They?re a perfectly fine organization. They?re assisting municipalities all over the world,? he said.

Membership allowed the committee to receive software to estimate how energy use might be cut in municipal buildings. Committee members also were able to attend regional meetings to learn what other towns and cities were doing on the energy-efficiency front, Lee said.

?It?s pretty small-scale stuff,? he said. ICLEI does have ?a particular regimen they want you to follow. Our committee never did that.?

The city has improved energy efficiency at City Hall, and plans to do the same at the police station, the Belfast Free Library and the Boat House, Lee said.

A handout given to pedestrians on Wednesday featuring Shurtleff?s photo and biography noted that ? Agenda 21 will require a profound reorientation of all human society, unlike anything the world has ever experienced.?

During the protest, Shurtleff said planning and environmental initiatives conflicted with the personal liberty protections of the U.S. Constitution.

Lee remained perplexed.

?It?s hard to even understand [the protesters?] position,? Lee said. ?Apparently there?s something wrong with trying to live sustainably.?

Taking Scottish Food to the Next Level - Scotland Food and Drink

Local food has been given a boost as ?2.5 million is made available over three years to support initiatives that put a spotlight on Scotland?s outstanding natural produce.

Scottish Government

The Scottish Government is working in collaboration with SRUC ? Scotland?s Rural College ? to set up Think Local, an initiative to deliver targeted support and advice to local food companies, networks and communities.

Think Local will include the ?1.5 million Community Food Fund, which will deliver funding to a wide range of projects ? such as local food marketing, food tourism, farmers markets, food festivals and events.

Plans are also being progressed for the National Food & Drink Forum, a diverse body that will bring together a broad array of experts from industry, health and environment and wider society to advise government on the strategic direction of our approach to food and drink, with a remit to put forward practical solutions.

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said:

?Here in Scotland we have a fantastic range of fine food and drink right on our doorstep, with more and more Scots realising the excellent quality and taste that local producers deliver. But we can always do more. Think Local will help champion local food, by supporting projects and events across Scotland.

?With the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup and a second Homecoming celebration in 2014, we have a great opportunity to showcase Scotland to the world. Food & drink will be an integral part to that and I want every business ? from the largest to the smallest ? to have the opportunity to take part. That?s what the Community Food Fund will aim to achieve.

?Scotland has made great strides over the past five years in how our food and drink is perceived, backed up by soaring exports. But I want more Scots to have access to delicious and nutritious local food, which is a particular challenge during these tough economic times. This is one issue I intend to put to the National Food & Drink Forum.

?Scotland is blessed by natural resources ? in terms of our water, land and people. But for our food and drink industry to continue to be successful we also to face up to the challenges. That includes the climate challenge, the diet challenge and the economic challenge. The Forum will bring together a diverse range of individuals to think ahead on these key issues and ensure we are best positioned for the future.

?Taking in views from the industry, health and environment sectors and wider society, the National Food & Drink Forum will explore these issues and offer up practical solutions. I look forward to setting out full details about the new Forum later this year.?

David Lamb, Head of Food and Drink at SRUC, said:

?Think Local builds on the excellent work already delivered in the development of local food. It brings together strands which have looked to develop the sector of local and speciality food from farms shops and farmers markets through to the regional networks which are enhancing Scotland?s reputation for quality food.

?We want to see that develop, to create a local food and drink landscape across Scotland, including tourism and events. This is the mechanism to make that happen.?

Alan Stevenson, Development Director at the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society, who will be involved in the development of Think Local, added:

?We?re delighted to be a part of this joined up approach across Scotland to help develop local and regional food opportunities. It brings together all the expertise available in Scotland to drive forward the growth of local foods through Think Local.?

?We know the industry and Government partnership model works extremely well, as has proved the case in the delivery of the successful Scottish Farmers Markets Partnership project, which included several of the key players in this exciting new initiative.?

9 Habits of Super Positive People

post written by: Angel

9 Habits of Super Positive People

Life is full of positive experiences.? Notice them.? Notice the sun warming your skin, the small child learning to walk, and the smiling faces around you.? Smell the rain, and feel the wind.? Live your life to the fullest potential by reveling in the beauty of these experiences, and letting them inspire you to be the most positive version of YOU.

What would happen if you approached each day intentionally, with a positive attitude?? What would happen if you embraced life?s challenges with a smile on your face?? What would happen if you surrounded yourself with people who made you better?? What would happen if you paused long enough to appreciate it all?

Living a positive life is all about creating positive habits to help you focus on what truly matters.? This is the secret of super positive people.? Here are nine simple ideas to help you follow in their footsteps.

  1. Wake up every morning with the idea that something wonderful is possible today. ? Smiling is a healing energy.? Always find a reason to smile.? It may not add years to your life but will surely add life to your years.? A consistent positive attitude is the cheapest ?fountain of youth.?? You?ve got to dance like there?s nobody watching, love like you?ll never be hurt, sing like there?s nobody listening, and live like it?s heaven on Earth.? Read The How of Happiness.
  2. Celebrate your existence. ? Your mind is the window through which you see the world.? The way to make this the happiest day ever is to think, feel, walk, talk, give, and serve like you are the most fortunate person in the whole world.? Open minded, open hearted, and open handed.? Nothing more is needed.? All is well? and so it is.
  3. Appreciate life?s perfect moments. ? Your life isn?t perfect, but it does have perfect moments.? Don?t let the little things get you down.? You?ve got plenty of reasons to look up at the sky and say, ?Thank you, I will do my best to make this a great day.?? So slow down and pause for a moment to stand in awe of the fact that you are alive, and that you have the ability to rediscover life as the miracle it has always been.
  4. Embrace life?s challenges. ? Uncharted territory in your life is not good or bad, it just is.? Yes, it may rattle your foundation, and you may be tempted to pullback, say you can?t do it, or bail completely.? But these are exactly the conditions that set you up for massive amounts of personal growth.? Each experience through which you pass operates ultimately for your own good.? This is the correct attitude to adopt, and you must be able to see it in this light.? Read Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life.
  5. Become addicted to constant and never-ending self improvement. ? It doesn?t have to be January 1st to give yourself a chance to make the most out of your life.? Every day is a new day to learn, grow, develop your strengths, heal yourself from past regrets, and move forward.? Every day gives you a chance to reinvent yourself, to fine-tune who you are, and build on the lessons you have learned.? It is never too late to change things that are not working in your life and switch gears.? Using today wisely will always help you create a more positive tomorrow.
  6. Live and breathe the truth. ? It?s the most positive, stress-free way to live, because the truth always reveals itself eventually anyway.? So don?t aim to be impressive, aim to be true.? Those who are true are truly impressive.? Being true means having integrity; and integrity is doing the right thing even when you know nobody is watching.
  7. Fill your own bucket. ? Choose to be happy for no reason at all.? If you are happy for a reason, you could be in trouble, because that reason can get taken away from you.? So smile right now because you can right now, and make it a point to fill your own bucket of happiness so high that the rest of the world can?t poke enough holes to drain it dry.
  8. Help the people around you smile. ? Today, give someone one of your smiles.? It might be the only sunshine they see all day.? Sometimes just a single genuine smile or compliment can lift a person?s spirits to new heights.? At the right time, a kind word from a stranger, or unexpected encouragement from a friend, can make all the difference in the world.? Kindness is free, but it?s priceless.? And as you know, what goes around comes around.? Read A New Earth.
  9. Spend time with positive people. ? Life?s way too awesome to waste time with people who don?t treat you right.? So surround yourself with people who make you happy and make you smile.? People who help you up when you?re down.? People who would never take advantage of you.? People who genuinely care.? They are the ones worth keeping in your life.? Everyone else is just passing through.
