Kaiser Permanente's Archimedes IndiGO Helps Calculate Heart ...

August 15, 2012

Archimedes IndiGO, Kaiser Permanente?s unique decision support tool, was recently chosen as the risk assessment engine for the new $100,000 mobile app challenge sponsored by the Office of the National Coordinator. As part of the HHS Million Hearts Risk Check Challenge, the ONC is inviting developers to create a mobile app that helps consumers take a heart-health risk assessment, find places to get checked, and use the results to work with their doctor to develop a plan for improving their heart health.

Developed by Archimedes? team members Don Morris, PhD, Josh Adler and David Eddy, MD, PhD, IndiGO is designed for use by patients, physicians, care managers and health coaches.

IndiGO quantifies the member?s risk of serious conditions, in this case heart health, and then prioritizes the actions the member can take to reduce his or her risk based on personal preferences. The result is a more informed and collaborative conversation between provider and member about care options, giving the member a sense of ownership in the decision-making process.

Jed Weissberg, MD, Kaiser Permanente senior vice president, Hospitals, Quality and Care Delivery (Dr. Weissberg also chairs the Archimedes board of directors) notes, ?IndiGO is an important tool in helping to assess risk, but more importantly, can be leveraged to act as an invitation for conversation between provider and patient to help manage that risk. We want to aid in keeping the community at large heart-healthy, and IndiGO?s use in this ONC challenge helps to do just that.?

Trawler turns up weird deep-sea sharks

A two-month fishing expedition to the Indian Ocean has turned up hundreds of strange deep-sea sharks, and several are likely new to science.

At least eight new species could be among the fishy haul, said Paul Clerkin, a shark ecology graduate student at California's Moss Landing Marine Laboratories.

Clerkin joined the commercial fishing venture in March and April of this year, in hopes that the vessel's massive trawling nets might pluck sharks from the deep sea. He was not disappointed.

"I tell people I have a ton of sharks, and they keep thinking I?m joking," Clerkin said. "It was an actual ton. I brought back 350 sharks." [ See some of the sharks ]

The sharks were caught as bycatch from depths of about 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) from a region of undersea mountains, or seamounts, about a week's journey south of the island of Mauritius.

    1. Researchers crack retinal code?for artificial vision

Cornell University researchers have devised a new method for restoring human vision by looking into the way retinal cells communicate with the brain and each other. The result, they claim, is an enormous leap in quality over existing visual prosthetics.

    4. US population is pi high: 3.14 hundred million

Day after day, the ship's nets brought up dozens of bizarre sharks from the deep ? some dainty, some enormous, nearly all of them rare or entirely new species.

"They don?t look like the classic great whites you'll see on Shark Week," Clerkin said. "I think they're more interesting." Weird features abound: knifelike snouts, moonlike eyes and at least one shark with a curved, serrated spine emerging from its back.

Among the largest was a false catshark, a pointy-faced fish about 10 feet (3 m) long. Although it's a known species, it's a notoriously elusive one.

"It was exciting because I knew they were really rare, and the chance of seeing them was pretty small," Clerkin told OurAmazingPlanet. Yet after a while, he said, he began to think the species isn't nearly as rare as the literature suggests.

"We actually caught a lot ? close to 35," he said, adding that it's likely humans simply haven't explored the parts of the ocean where false catsharks live. "I think it shows there's a lot we don't understand about sharks," he said.

Clerkin is taking between 80 and 90 measurements from each shark, a time-consuming task, and is also sending off genetic samples for comparison.

If the any of the species are indeed new, Clerkin gets to name them. He said he'll likely name some of the sharks for his science mentors. "And maybe I'll name one after my mom," he said.

Advertising Online - 5 Free Channels For Your Business | 12Dass.com

What a wonderful invention it is, this thing we call the Internet!

If you would just take your time to know your way around, you could discover a lot of premium products and services being offered for free.

What?s best is that there is a seemingly endless number of these wonderful finds, what with the Internet being a vast network of constantly evolving ideas and all!

Among these magnificent benefits is the chance to be able to promote your business, any business, online, free of charge!

It doesn?t matter if your enterprise is a purely online or offline venture, the World Wide Web is home to a great number of marketing opportunities that you could avail of, with no damage to your business? budget whatsoever.

Advertising can be a big problem otherwise. A lot of companies reserve a big chunk of their budgets to cover marketing expenditures.

Sometimes, these gambles pay off, but there are occasions when they fail miserably, putting to waste some good money that could have been used in other areas of development for the business involved.

But with the many channels available online, marketing has become a less risky course of action. There so many avenues available online where you could advertise your business for free and attain more exposure for your products or services. Here are some of them.

1. You could advertise through your own website. Ordinarily, you should pay a nominal fee for web hosting and your domain name. A paid web hosting service is more reliable.

Your own domain name would impress upon your visitors an immediate sense of professionalism. But if you don?t want to spend for them, there are a lot of free web space providers on the Internet!

2. You could advertise through other people?s websites. And you could do this in a lot of ways too! You could create a banner that would summarize your business? offers and have it displayed on existing pages.

Or if you have your won website for your business, you could use the said banner to link to your pages, or you could even settle for simple links. Additionally, you could have other webmasters rave about your venture and they could talk about it in their own websites.

3. You could create your own affiliate program. By giving commissions as incentive, you could invite a lot of Internet users to become your affiliates.

Each affiliate would work to help you make a sale. It?s like having a battalion of sales representatives that you?d only have to pay if they manage to refer a willing customer!

4. You could try viral marketing. Viral marketing is the online equivalent of word o mouth advertising. By giving away something for free, for as long as that something has a link or a simple reference to your business, you?re encouraging the recipient to spread the word about your business to the people he knows.

This would result in the exponential expansion of your business message like wildfire.

5. You could advertise in online communities. Forums and mailing lists are popular venues that could likewise convey your business message. Membership to these groups is usually free.

Additionally, you could also create your own mailing list and start capturing leads for future sales by doing some helpful follow-ups.

The Internet is a great place for promoting your business. There are five million people online at any given time and the world is, quite literally, your market.

It would be best for your business to capitalize on this wonderful opportunity and expand your audience a thousand fold bigger!

And you wouldn?t even have to spend a penny while you?re at it.

Guam News - Guam News

Guam - Following last week's protest filed by TakeCare Insurance over the manner in which the negotiations for the GovGuam Health Insurance contract have been handled, Governor Calvo's Chief of Staff, Frank Arriola confirmed that? those negotiations have been suspended, until the procurement protest has been resolved.

The suspension of? procurement negotiations is required by law following a protest.

READ Arriola's statement in FULL below:

"Pursuant to Guam's procurement laws, the negotiations over the Government's health insurance contract have been stayed with all parties due to the protest filed by an insurance provider.? We will work to ensure there is no interruption in health insurance for the thousands of GovGuam employees and retirees covered by this plan."

TakeCare filed the protest after initially being informed by DOA that they had been chosen as one of the final 3 companies to participate in the negotiations for the $70-million dollar contract to insure GovGuam employees.

But the day those negotiations were scheduled to begin, Assistant Attorney General John Weisenberger told TakeCare the negotiations were cancelled.? And later TakeCare was informed some of their responses to the RFP were non-responsive. TakeCare was moved down to 4th place on the bidding list and out of the negotiation round.

Baby delivered after car crash that killed pregnant mother has died ...

The baby girl who was delivered after a fatal car crash in Dallas killed her mother has died.

Baby Ashlynn Leona Womack was on life support at?Methodist Charlton Medical Center?since the Aug. 5 ?accident.?

ShaChela Womack, 35, of Arlington, died hours after a car accident in the Mountain Creek area of Dallas. A family friend said Womack was returning from a baby shower. She was nine months pregnant. Her 15-year-old son was driving their minivan and her 5-year-old daughter in the van suffered from injuries that were not life-threatening.

Doctors managed to save baby Ashlynn and put her on life support. Family visited and prayed for her recovery but her brain activity was low and the infant was unresponsive.

ShaChela Womack had just married her husband, Ricky Womack Jr. on June 30. The father and husband had been out of town for his grandmother?s funeral the day of the accident.

The Truth About Small Business Branding

The Truth About Small Business Branding Infographic

The truth about small business branding is a pretty informative infographic created by CreativePool and Printed based on a survey with almost 1,000 creative professional, freelance designers and printers about the truth of branding for small business and startups.

The piece of information which I find to be more relevant, and does make a lot of sense in the hard economy times we?re living in, is that most of the small business brief their creatives to work their brands around the ?good value? concept. It truly show that small business are in tune with reality, and offering good value is pretty much compulsory nowadays.

However I wonder, how many of these brands are really about good value other than anything else? The economy will eventually get back in shape, are they still continue to build their brand around the good value concept? Maybe it?s just me, but I feel that ?good value? is a pretty ephemeral value to build a brand, unless we?re talking about Poundland of course.

Either way, pretty much interesting information here.

Wordplay Blog: Numberplay: Wolves and Sheep

Special announcement! Numberplay?s Gary Antonick will be on vacation for several weeks. The next Numberplay post will appear on Monday, Sept. 10.

Our puzzle this week comes from the math educator and Numberplay contributor Joshua Zucker, who uses it to illustrate a fundamental technique in problem solving: patience. ?Real problems require real patience,? says Mr. Zucker, who finds this instructive ?especially for kids, who may be used to solving everything in their math class in a few seconds.?

The puzzle is called Wolves and Sheep

On a 5?5 chessboard, place 5 wolves (who can move like chess queens) and 3 sheep so that all the sheep are safe from being eaten by the wolves.

That?s it.

Before getting to the recap of last week?s puzzle I?d like to introduce a remarkable new Numberplay tool.

Have you ever looked at a Numberplay puzzle with its batch of comments and wondered:

  1. How tough is this puzzle?
  2. Where are the real debates?
  3. What?s my own problem-solving style?

The answers to these questions can be found in Numberplay comments, but sifting through dozens of blog comments is like skimming a 20-protagonist mystery. You get the sense someone died, but you?re not quite sure who it was, exactly, or when it happened, or how the unfortunate incident occurred.

This is where Gary Hewitt?s new Numberplay Comment Fix comes in handy. This tool not only numbers comments and provides a handy filter-by-name feature, but also creates visual summaries of entire Numberplay conversations. These visual summaries provide surprising insight into the actual content of the discussion. The Comment Fix is your Pocket Poirot.

Let?s take last week?s Spaghetti Loops, for example, which involved knotting up an innocent plate of pasta.

Spaghetti Loops comment volume over time.

We haven?t yet looked at the solution yet, but before we do ? how tough was the problem? Could middle school students take it on? High school students?

Neither, according to the Comment Fix, which suggests Spaghetti Loops was brutal ? one of the more difficult puzzles seen in Numberplay. Maybe something for undergrads or even graduate students. Comment volume, which for an average puzzle peaks on the first day, started out low and climbed to its zenith midweek, suggesting some real grappling with whatever was thrown out as the initial answer.

3-Point Turn: Where?s the debate?

We?ll look a bit more at this grappling when we get to our Spaghetti Loops recap. Let?s first look at how the Comment Fix can identify another vital component of puzzle-solving: collaboration. Before reading on, check out the chart to the right. Can you find the debate?

The chart, which summarizes our recent 180-comment 3-Point Turn conversation, suggests a problem of moderate difficulty ? easier than Spaghetti Loops ? with an initial peak and subsequent rest. But there?s something else going on. Colors Green and Plum dominate the initial discussion and remain active long after everyone else has left the room. The two colors are clearly related, and their volume and duration would suggest some sort of collaboration. Something like a debate.

Several clicks to filter by name and it?s partially confirmed: Giovanni Ciriani and Dr W were pushing the puzzle past its original solution, with Dr W confirming graphically a result that Mr. Ciriani had initially reached by optimization. A little more reading shows that Mr. Ciriani was also continuing to experiment with something on his own: the geometry of parking in tight spaces.

This vehicular exploration is a fascinating read, by the way, and worth a small detour. What ignited a sustained curiosity in Dr W? What captivated Mr. Ciriani? I reached both by e-mail and received the following responses:

Dr W: I had at least four pieces of insight, all of them important, as follows:

1. It took a while for me to realize what Giovanni and Hans were doing by demanding that the steering be held constant to left or right extreme during the three-point maneuver. Frobozz?s remark also helped a lot.

2. Once I adopted the Giovanni-Hans constraint, I saw that each of the four wheels had to follow a concentric circular path, and these paths had identical radii in both extreme right and extreme left turnings. This led immediately to my three sets of four tangent concentric circles. It then became a game to manipulate the positions of these three circular sets to achieve minimum road width.

Giovanni Ciriani

3-Point Turn according to Giovanni Ciriani.

Dr W

3-Point Turn according to Dr W.

3. The next bit of insight came with the realization that the angle of the lines connecting the centers of the turning circles (shown as the two violet lines in the diagram) was the only single variable I actually needed to alter to reach the minimum road configuration for any particular set of turning circle radii.

4. The final insight came when I realized the minimum road configuration was achieved when each of the four wheel paths had to touch an edge of minimal road just once.

5. A fifth insight came right afterward and was present in my thinking almost from the very start, even though I didn?t fully realize it then. The left edge of the road follows the straight line through the rear wheel stop (red) and tangent (green) points, and the right edge follows the line through the front wheel stop (black) and tangent (blue) points. I noticed that in configurations where the road width is not minimal, these lines are not parallel, or, alternatively, only two of these four points sufficed to define the road edges with the other two lying within.

Giovanni Ciriani: This was a good puzzle, because it applied to a real life situation. Thanks to the what-if challenges of a group of aficionados (frobozzz, Hans and Gary H. to name a few), the puzzle soon became more challenging than at first sight, and I decided to make it really apply to my own car.

Parallel Parking:
The Theory.

Giovanni Ciriani

Parallel Parking: The Practice.

I measured the real geometry of the car, including positions of the axles, of the bumpers and the minimum turning radius. The optimization for a real car involved solving a system of four transcendental equations.

All in all this puzzle allowed me to improve my understanding of a 3-point U-turn, parallel parking, and parking in a narrow alley. I used to think that my parking skills were quite good, having honed them growing up in Italy where parking availability has always been tight. However, I was impressed to have improved my parking skills with Numberplay. Through the puzzle I gained a better understanding of car maneuvering. The photograph shows how close I got to the curb recently in one tight parallel-parking situation in just one straight back-up maneuver.

Recap: Spaghetti Loops

Last week we played around with Spaghetti Loops.

The puzzle: A plate of pasta contains 100 strands of spaghetti. Tie two loose ends. Keep doing this until there are no more loose ends. What is the expected number of loops at the end?

The solution: Hans said it perfectly:

So the answer is 3.3, or the sum of 1 + 1/3 + 1/5 + ? + 1/199. Elegant, beautiful, concise. Maybe a little too concise. What was going on? Here?s Baltimark?s explanation:

In ?my? layman?s terms. . .when you have N strands, you have a (1/(2N-1)) probability of adding one loop to the previous case by tying the new strand to itself (that?s my first term in the sum.). You have a (1 ? 1/(2N-1)) chance of being exactly in the previous case.

Expected value is, of course, the probability of X times X. So, back to my equations. . .

(1/(2N-1)) = probability of tying new strand to itself TIMES
(1 + E(N-1)) = new value if we tie new strand to itself PLUS
(1-1/(2N-1)) = probability of NOT tying new strand to itself TIMES
E(N-1) = old value, which is the case we are in if we don?t tie new strand to itself.

Marco Moriconi, who originally presented the problem, presents the solution similarly:

Call E(n) the expected number of loops in an n-strand plate. Pick one end of one of the strands and tie it to another loose end. With probability 1/(2n-1) you will tie it to the same strand, forming a 1-strand loop, and with probability (2n-2)/(2n-1) you tie it to some other strand.

In the first situation you are left with n-1 strands plus one loop, which will be neutral, that is, it will be a loop until the end of the procedure. Therefore, at the end we expect E(n-1) + 1 loops ? the n-1 strands are expected to form E(n-1) loops, and we have a 1-loop from the beginning.

In the second situation you have 2 strands attached to each other, forming a longer strand (size 2, if you wish). What we have now is a plate with n-1 strands, it doesn?t matter if one of the strands is longer than the others. In equations, we have:
E(n) = (1/(2n-1)) x (E(n-1) + 1) + ((2n-2)/(2n-1)) x E(n-1)
or
E(n) = E(n-1) + 1/(2n-1)

This is a simple recurrence relation, whose solution is E(n) = 1 + 1/3 + 1/5 + ? + 1/(2n-1)

OK. Now this is starting to make sense. But if we did actually go about knotting 100 pieces of spaghetti we?d never get 3.3 loops, of course. We?d get some whole number. What would we tend to get? The most frequent outcome, as summarized by reader Gary, would be 3 loops, which would happen about 28% of the time.

After this main dish was devoured, frobozzz threw out a seemingly simple question:

Anyone given any thought to the distribution of lengths of the loops at the end of the process?

This kept the conversation rolling for much of the rest of the week.

Thank you to everyone who participated.

Notes

    1. I?d like to express my gratitude to Joshua Zucker for providing Wolves and Sheep. This puzzle was discussed recently at a Math Teachers? Circle co-led by Mr. Zucker at the American Institute of Mathematics in Palo Alto.
    2. I?d also like to thank Dr W and Giovanni Ciriani for sharing their experiences with the 3-Point Turn puzzle.
    3. Thank you as well to Marco Moriconi for recommending last week?s Pasta Loops. Dr. Moriconi picked up this puzzle from Peter Winkler?s Mathematical Mind-Benders.

Macedonian NGO Chief to Sue Lustration Body :: Balkan Insight

Vladimir Milcin | Photo by: Sinisa Jakov Marusic

Vladimir Milcin, a vocal critic of the government, accused Tome Adziev of deliberately withholding three key documents that prove his innocence against the accusation that he was a Communist-era police informant.?

Milcin argues that Adziev is attempting to frame him under instructions from the government. ??

?The goal of this lustration is not to settle the injustices of the past, but to tarnish people?s reputation,? Milcin said at a press conference on Monday.

He called Adziev a ?tumor in our society? who causes ?repulsiveness? with his ?industrious servility? to the government of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski.??

Milcin says that Adziev hid a document that reveals that the Security and Counter Intelligence Service, UBK, recently informed the Commission that rather than collaborating with the ex-Yugoslavian secret police, he was actually spied on by them.

The second document is a questionnaire from his 1983 police file that states that he has not been informing the secret police.?

The third document is an official police note from 1987.? The note pertains to police interest in one of his interviews and involved the questioning of his associates at the Drama Arts Faculty, where he was a professor.??

?This government is in no way different than the former communist regime that has followed me and my correspondence, checked and banned my plays and called me an anarcho-liberal,? Milcin said.??

In late July, the Commission named 11 people as communist informants and Milcin was one of them. ?

According to the new Lustration Law passed this summer, the Commission will publish the names of informants online. The law was enacted under the instruction of the ruling VMRO DPMNE party of Prime Minister Gruevski.

There are no longer any specified professions that have to be lustrated, but people are given the right to initiate the lustration process if they suspect someone collaborated with the police. ??

The Constitutional Court scrapped the previous law in late March and stated it is unconstitutional to compel people such as the clergy, journalists, NGO activists and others, to swear that they never collaborated with the secret police during the Communist period or afterwards.??

The Court also said that the law could only apply for the period before 1991, when states began to secede from the former Yugoslavia.? The new law, however, still sets the date for lustration until 2006, which is in defiance of the Constitutional Court?s ruling.??

Milcin says he will take the Commission?s accusation against him to the administrative court, which has the power to dismiss the claim.? ?

Introducing ZEN and TECH Parenting

ZEN and TECH is hosted by our very own Georgia, with a little bit of banter provided by yours truly. We don't always post it here on iMore because the subject matter -- how to center your inner geek and de-stress your connected life -- doesn't always directly relate to our focus here -- iPhone and iPads, and Apple stuff.

But Georgia is starting something new with ZEN and TECH that, while still not all about Apple, is something that I think could be of enormous value to a huge portion of our readership, listenership, and viewership.

Parenting.

There's absolutely nothing more important to the future of our world than our children, but while cars require licenses and gadgets come with instruction books, most of us aren't given a lot of help when it comes to the immensely more important job of raising our children.

Georgia's day job is as a therapist, and a highly successful one at that. When she's not reviewing the latest iPhone and iPad gear for us, or chatting on the podcast, she's helping people live better lives, and she's spent years specializing on children and parenting.

She typically charges a small fortune for her work but she's incredibly passionate about it, loves the Mobile Nations community, and wants to share her experience on the off chance (I'd say likely chance) it can help us with our parenting skills.

401k Withdrawal Catch 22

I have run into an unforeseen problem while planning my 401k retirement withdrawals. I planned to retire at 57 and start taking partial withdrawals each year from the 401k.The plan allows withdrawals upon retirement at age 55 without the 10% penalty.
I called Fidelity to confirm this since the plans summary discription was a little vague on the withdrawal side. I was told that I could take a withdrawal but it is the entire amount or take out an annuity. I guess I could roll it into an IRA and take 72t dstributions, but really don't want the hassle. Plus the plan offers institutional shares of mutual funds with miniscule expense ratios.
Does anyone have experience with this issue?

The law allows the withdrawals after retirement during or after the year you turn age 55 but your 401k plan can limit the options. In my case the options were to take all or to set up a systematic withdrawal plan for either a set number of years or based on life expectancy. The alternative to 401k withdrawals is to rollover to an IRA and setup 72t withdrawals. One advantage of this is that you have greater choice of investment options for IRA vs you 401k plan and you can choose lower cost investments. YMMV

Olympics chief touts women's access to sports

Officials will work to improve women?s access to sports in countries where it is restricted but it could take 10 years before significant progress is made, Jacques Rogge, the head of the Olympic movement, said Sunday.

Three countries -- Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei -- sent women to the Games for the first time, making London 2012 the first to have female competitors from every participating nation.

At a press conference at the Olympic Park, Rogge was asked what would be done to ensure these were not simply ?token appearances.?

?We are going to continue to discuss with the local authorities and sports ministries and try to find strategies and solutions to improve the situation,? he said.

?It will take time. The ideal situation will not be found tomorrow. This is work for probably a decade at least to see major improvements,? he added.

There was a roar from the crowd in the main Olympic stadium when Saudi Arabian 800-meter runner Sarah Attar, who also has U.S. citizenship, was introduced for a heat on Wednesday last week. She waved and smiled in response.

Olympics bring pride, hope to Afghanistan

Running covered from head to toe except for her face, she was quickly faded from the field, finishing last with a time of 2 minutes 44.95 seconds, nearly a minute off the world record of 1 minute 53.28 seconds.

After the race, she told U.K. broadcaster the BBC that her run wasn?t about winning, but was for women in Saudi Arabia, saying she hoped it would "make a difference" and that "it sparks something amazing.?

At Sunday?s press conference, Rogge said the participation of athletes from such countries -- where women do not have equal access to sports -- had been ?a very important one.?Saudi Olympian allowed to compete in judo wearing hijab

?It opened the door for more and definitely it was a very strong signal,? he said.

Speaking generally, Rogge said the IOC only got involved in human rights issues that impacted the Olympics, such as the working conditions of people who build the venues, child labor used to make sports equipment, and compensation for people forced out of their homes to make way for the Games.

?We?re not for general issues of humans rights, like whether there should be a death penalty or not,? he said.

Military to fill empty seats at London Olympics

Rogge said on the whole he was ?very happy? with London 2012, picking out a string of highlights including the performances of multiple gold-medal winners Usain Bolt of Jamaica, Michael Phelps of the U.S. and Chris Hoy of the U.K., saying the tears of the latter had been his moment of the Games.Islam in the Olympics: All countries send women

However, asked about problems getting tickets in person and on the Internet, Rogge admitted this would be looked at before the next Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016.

Particularly at the start of London 2012, there were many empty seats at some venues, although the main stadium was packed for most of the athletics events.

?We?re definitely going to review the ticketing policy of the games,? Rogge said. ?We?re going to see whether this system [the ticket distribution system] can continue to work. The venues were full and that?s the most important thing.?

Are Olympics a Trojan horse for Big Brother?

Ettore Ferrari / EPA file

A security camera stands on a lamp post in front of London's iconic Clock Tower, which houses Big Ben, on July 23.

By Bob Sullivan

When the Olympic flame is doused on Sunday, we know the cheers will quiet, the athletes will move on and fans will go home. But will Big Brother stay behind?

Every Olympics host city goes through it: the Olympic hangover. When the athletes step off the medal podiums, the city must clean up, pay the bills and figure out how to monetize a series of shiny new venues. The most important decision, however, might seem much more subtle: What happens to all those new security cameras and other surveillance technologies that were installed for the Games? Privacy experts fret that, as with Athens, Beijing and Vancouver, the Olympics means a steep ratcheting up of security that never really gets ratcheted down.

"It would be a tragedy if the most visible legacy of the Games in London was a huge increase in the amount of surveillance people are subjected to in their everyday lives," said Nick Pickles, director of London-based Big Brother Watch.

Host cities tolerate massive shows of security that would otherwise be unimaginable. In London, which already has more CCTV security cameras than any other city in the world, 2,000 new cameras were installed in the Olympic Village, while nearly 2,000 more were installed around the city, according to Big Brother Watch. License plate recognition systems have been installed throughout London. There are even surface-to-air missiles atop apartment buildings and more military troops on the ground than Britain has in Afghanistan. An $877 million effort, it's been called the largest peacetime deployment of security forces in history, but the question remains: Will there be mission creep? How much of that infrastructure and the public?s newfound tolerance for being watched will remain after the Games are finished?

Earlier this year, the Electronic Frontier Foundation published an analysis of all recent Games and says the results are disheartening.? It should come as no surprise that the Beijing Summer Games were used as an excuse to install thousands of cameras that are still in operation, said the report?s author, Rebecca Bowe. But other cities have suffered similar fates, too.

"The Games bring a legacy that lives well beyond the prestige," Bowe said. "We've witnessed time and again, the security infrastructure lives on well beyond the Games."

Concrete concerns
The concerns aren't merely theoretical. Athens officials installed about 1,000 cameras for the 2004 Summer Games. In 2007, Greece amended its national data protection law to exempt the cameras; Greek privacy commissioner Dimitris Gourgourakis resigned over the incident. The cameras have since been used during protests following economic unrest there.

More Olympics coverage in London 2012: Hosting the Games

The Olympics has a long-running legacy as a massive security event, which long pre-dates post-9/11 terrorism concerns. It dates at least as far back as the Munich Summer Games of 1972, when a security breach contributed to the kidnapping of Israeli athletes from the Olympic Village; 11 were eventually murdered.? But even before that event, the Olympics were never free of international politics and the real possibility that some group might use them to violently make a point.

No one disputes the need for heightened security during the Games, but is the installation of security infrastructure, and the culture that comes with it, a one-way street? Can a security state be dismantled? Or are the Games a Trojan horse that allows those with a heavy-handed security agenda to gain the upper hand?

Olympic security plan transforms London into fortress

"The equipment has been bought and paid for. The real risk is they simply leave it in place and turn it over to local authorities, and by the back door, we have a huge increase in surveillance," Pickles said. "Government officials have made assurances that some of it is temporary, but they haven't said what."

Already, whiz-bang security technology in London has proven tempting to local authorities. Pickles pointed to minutes from a recent borough council meeting in Newham, just east of London, where officials openly expressed desire to buy Olympics surveillance technology after the Games end.

Alfredo Lopez, founder of the international privacy advocacy organization MayFirst/PeopleLink, said it's very difficult to reverse the Olympics security buildup.

"There is no way these guys are going to take down those cameras, especially with all the social unrest there," said Lopez, who is based in New York.

Lopez, a professed lover of Olympic sports, said the security issue threatens to squander any of the goodwill gained by the otherwise-peaceful international gathering.

Red Tape Chronicles on NBCNews.com

"I happen to believe, and I know this is corny, (that) the Olympics is one of the greatest things the human race does, so why do these bastards pervert it with their repressive attitudes?" he said. "How can you run a principal event of goodwill and friendship, then at same time, on top of buildings you have missiles? It's totally incongruous. It's very, very disturbing and contradictory to the Olympic spirit. It ruins the whole thing."

'It softens people up'
One fundamental problem of the Games is that they are used as an "obvious show of military capability," Lopez said, with host nations using the occasion the beat their chests about their powerful ability to respond to threats. But Pickles is worried about a much more subtle issue: Residents get used to the trade-off between privacy and heightened security practices, and their tolerance level is slowly raised, leading to fewer objections to police tactics.

"The danger is it softens people up to the next step," he said.

The next step is Brazil in 2016, where circumstances on the ground dictate what will almost inevitably be an even stronger implementation of security force and technology. (Privacy advocates are too pessimistic about the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, to use those games as a battleground.) An active battle between paramilitary police forces and organized crime means residents are used to compromised civil liberties, and even before the 2016 Games, Rio de Janeiro will host the World Cup in 2014. Diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks suggest that U.S. government officials have encouraged use of additional surveillance tools by the Brazilian government, as well as a partnership with U.S. security agencies.

As a result, market research firm 6Wresearch predicts the market for security cameras will nearly quadruple, to $362 million, by 2016.

By then, Pickles warns, people have another element to worry about: increased sophistication of technologies like facial recognition. Londoners, for example, would almost certainly not tolerate a permanent military presence in the city. But as police gadgets get smaller and smarter, they also become less visible.

/

A diverse community in East London will welcome the world to Britain for the 2012 Olympic Games. Meet residents and hear how they feel about having a huge, world stage in their backyard.

"It's getting more discreet, even as the processing power is getting more powerful," he said. "It's becoming much more clandestine, ... which means people won't object to it as much."

Looking to Vancouver
Brazil and London might be able to learn something from Vancouver's experience after the 2010 Winter Games. Western Canada has an active civil participation culture, and even before the Games began, Canada's privacy commissioner warned about mission creep in Olympics security plans.

"The right to privacy must be upheld, even during mega-events like the Olympic Games, where the threat to security is higher than usual," Commissioner Jennifer Stoddard said in a speech delivered before the Games calling for dismantling of surveillance technology after the Games. "Will the residents of Vancouver and the lower mainland wind up living surrounded by an array of surveillance systems that they neither want nor need?"

Partly as a result, most of the 900 video cameras installed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were removed after the Games. About 75 were left behind for use by the Vancouver police, said Adam Molnar, who is studying the Olympics security effect as part of his Ph.D. work at the University of Victoria.

Oda / Getty Images

From Wimbledon to Wembley Stadium to The Dome, a look at the venues for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

"British Columbia civil liberties associations put pressure on the Vancouver Police Department, which was in negotiations to keep the cameras up," he said. Even some of the remaining cameras were turned off, only to be used in crisis situations, he said.

On the other hand, analysis of Vancouver's post-Olympics security hangover is muddied by the fact that in the spring of 2011, there were major riots after the Vancouver Canucks lost hockey?s Stanley Cup final. City officials have successfully turned to Twitter and other social media tools that deputized people to help identify criminals during the riots. Given the embarrassment over the riots, many residents were eager to help.

"That turns out to be an alternate route to (security) cameras everywhere," Molnar said.

The most lasting legacy of the Vancouver Games, Molnar said, was not police gadgetry, but rather reorganization of the police force into small, nimble anti-riot teams that share some characteristics with paramilitary teams.

"The extent that militarist ideal supplants community-based policing, that should concern people," he said. "And any time you have a deepening of integration between civilian and military police, like you have now in London, that's disturbing."

Molnar felt confident that Vancouver's security experience offered some hope to privacy advocates in London and Rio, however.

East London, which will host the Olympic Games, boasts a colorful history. NBC News' Jim Maceda reports.

"You can look to Vancouver as a positive example of an active civil liberty and political community that tried to engage the government around privacy and surveillance issues, and that did earn some small victories," he said. "In many ways it's forced policing agencies to respond to public debate. ... There's certainly a need for informed civilian oversight."

'Mega-events'
But Bowe, of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said she's worried that the Olympics will continue to be abused as one of a list of "mega-events" that give officials permission to tighten the security screws until tremendous power is concentrated in small government forces.

"The march toward a militarized, urban future will continue apace unless people push back," she said.?

Traveling around traffic-plagued London can be a hassle at the best of times -- never mind during an event such as the Olympic Games. NBCNews.com put the city to the test in a race to the Olympic Park.

And Lopez sees little room for hope at the moment.

"My general worry as a human being is about the setting up of apparatus of police states in all of these places," he said.

Even those who have faith in the good intentions of their current government are being short-sighted, he warned.

"The (U.S.) and some of these places are not a police state now. But the problem is if the apparatus is set up, it could be easily be Nazified and turned on people. ... If there's a history to the world, it's that certain small, elite groups of people usurp and pervert the great works of the majority of humanity, like the Olympic Games, for nefarious and selfish purposes."

Worst Dive Ever: Stephan Feck Flops at Olympics

Stephan Feck of Germany turned in what was probably the worst dive of the 2012 London Olympics the other night, becoming a viral sensation in the process.

He deserves all the respect and credit in the world for training and making the Games in the first place, but even he'd tell you this was an epic fail.

Watch his effort from the 3-meter springboard diving preliminaries for yourself:

The dive seemed solid enough when Feck first catapulted off the springboard, but the athlete's hand soon slipped from his thigh and his form unraveled.

Feck, obviously, failed to qualify, finishing in last with a score of 133.80 ... and that devastating, backward belly flop probably hurt like the daylights too.

On the plus side, he probably has more YouTube views than the medalists!
