Assad's forces seize Homs district from rebels: activists

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian government forces have pushed rebels from a district in Homs after several days of fierce fighting in the strategically important city, opposition activists said on Saturday.

The army moved into Deir Ba'alba, a neighborhood on the northeastern edge of Homs, they said, leaving the rebels controlling just the central neighborhoods around the old city and the district of Khalidiyah, immediately to the north.

Homs, in central Syria, was the scene earlier this year of some of the heaviest fighting in the 21-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad which has killed at least 45,000 people, according to activist tallies.

On the junction of roads linking Assad's power base in Damascus to the heartlands of his Alawite minority in the port city of Tartous and Latakia province, Homs has strategic value in his battle with the mainly Sunni Muslim rebels.

There were unconfirmed reports that dozens of fighters had been killed in the battle for Deir Ba'alba, the director of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdelrahman, said.

Rebels have been gaining ground in recent months, particularly in the northern provinces of Aleppo and Idlib, and launched an offensive in the central Hama province which would extend their control south towards Homs and Damascus.

But an activist in Hama province said on Saturday that the army had reinforced its positions in the town of Morek, which lies on the main north-south highway linking Damascus to Aleppo, to push back rebels who were running low on ammunition.

A rebel attack on the military base of Wadi Deif, further north on the same highway, had also slowed as rebels struggled to maintain supplies, the activist who used the name Ali al-Idlibi told Reuters by Skype.

He also said Assad's forces had bombarded the provincial town of Karnaz in Hama on Saturday, killing 10 people. Other activists said 12 people were wounded, with no fatalities. It is not possible to verify reports from Syria because authorities restrict media operations in the country.

Activists also said a Palestinian fighter who had been a prominent figure in the armed wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas was killed in Aleppo province on Friday.

Mohammed Qanita was killed in fighting around Aleppo airport where he had been helping to train Arab and Muslim fighters, a rebel said.

A Hamas source in Gaza said Qanita had left the Qassam Brigade of Hamas and joined a jihadi group before leaving for Syria to fight there.

The exiled leadership of Hamas was based in Damascus until earlier this year, when officials from the Sunni Islamist movement, which sympathises with the uprising against Assad, quietly pulled out.

Audio Self-Destructs if It's Copied Too Many Times

In 1969, composer Alvin Lucier created a work that's half science demo, half wonderfully creepy art: he recorded and then re-recorded, his own voice, over and over, until it turned into nothing but noise. It's the coolest thing you'll hear today. More »

(AP) ? Geno Auriemma insists long winning streaks do little to get him amped up, even after he traveled his Connecticut team across the country to face top-ranked Stanford and its daunting 82-game unbeaten run at Maples Pavilion.

The Huskies sure got a thrill from leaving with an unexpected rout and silencing a typically raucous crowd ? and likely stealing away the No. 1 spot in the polls along with it.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and second-ranked UConn played spoiler and streak-buster this time, snapping Stanford's nation-leading home winning streak with a surprisingly easy 61-35 victory Saturday.

It was the Huskies who saw the end of their NCAA record 90-game winning streak at Maples Pavilion with a 71-59 loss two years ago, almost to the day on Dec. 30.

"The last time we were here it was a big event for them and they treated it like it was a big event, and God bless them," Auriemma said. "But for us to win a game here in late December, it's no more than just a big game against a really good team. The other stuff, I didn't get all that excited about us winning 90, I'm not going to get that excited about us beating somebody who's won 82 in a row at home."

Mosqueda-Lewis scored 19 points as UConn (11-0) thoroughly outplayed Stanford (11-1) on both ends of the floor in this highly touted game featuring the country's top programs and Final Four regulars from opposite coasts.

Stanford got harassed right off the home floor that it ruled with perfection and dominant play for nearly six years ? and the Huskies surely took the Cardinal's No. 1 spot along with it.

The game was the 51st meeting between the top two teams in the poll. The No. 1 seed had won the previous nine matchups and holds a 31-20 lead.

Chiney Ogwumike had 18 points and 13 rebounds but struggled in the post as Stanford lost at home for the first time since March 2007.

"It was a bad day. Whatever we were trying to do, we really struggled with it," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "Connecticut came in here on a mission. Mission accomplished."

Stefanie Dolson had 10 points and 14 rebounds and flustered Ogwumike all afternoon, and Bria Hartley and Kelly Faris also scored 10 apiece for UConn.

Breanna Stewart scored seven straight points during a decisive 17-2 run in the first half as UConn built a 22-7 lead against the cold-shooting Cardinal and kept the pressure on the rest of the way.

Stanford trailed 31-13 at halftime in one of its worst 20 minutes in recent memory ? though the school had no record of when the Cardinal were last held to that few points in a half.

They had gone five full seasons with an unbeaten record on their home floor.

Mosqueda-Lewis, last season's Big East top freshman averaging 16.4 points and 5.0 rebounds, shot 7 for 13 as Connecticut shot 37.5 percent from the floor ? and that was plenty good enough against a Stanford team that wound up at a dismal 19.3 percent (11 for 57) in its lowest single-game shooting performance and fewest field goals made.

"I love the game, I think it's a great game for both teams, but for our game two years ago it was a national event ? I don't think tonight was a national event," Auriemma said. "We beat a really good Stanford team on their home court and they happened to have won a lot of games at home."

Stanford had four early possessions over the opening 4 1/2 minutes in which it faced a dwindling shot clock.

This wasn't the Cardinal's worst home loss ever ? that was a 96-51 defeat to Long Beach State on March 10, 1983 ? though UConn sure made it feel like it for an afternoon to silence a typically animated crowd.

Auriemma was booed by the crowd during pregame introductions, then again when the coach was whistled for a technical foul with his team ahead 19 points with 13:22 remaining.

UConn, which had trailed for only 48 seconds all season coming into the game and now just 2:21 in all, won for the first time at Stanford in four tries.

Ogwumike, Stanford's leading scorer and rebounder averaging 21.8 points and 12.8 boards, was held to 6-for-22 shooting.

"I don't think I've experienced anything like this," Ogwumike said. "That Connecticut team we played for 40 minutes is the standard. And the great thing is now we've experienced the standard."

UConn's 6-foot-5 Dolson made things tough all day for Ogwumike ? who stands 6-4 ? and gave her problems with a size advantage to deny Stanford's top player and keep her away from the basket. That led to some forced shots in the first half, when Ogwumike missed 8 of her first 9 attempts. She scored at the 7:25 mark of the first half to end a nearly 6-minute scoring drought since her previous basket on a putback at 13:19.

Stanford then went 4:58 without scoring before Ogwumike's three-point play 2:27 before halftime.

"Stefanie was going to guard Chiney until she proved that she couldn't," Auriemma said.

Dolson was whistled for her third foul with 17:42 left in the game, but Mikaela Ruef missed both free throws.

Walking off the court after this one "was complete opposite," Dolson said.

"Two years ago we lost and it ended our streak. It was just a horrible loss," she recalled.

Bonnie Samuelson's back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the second half, the Cardinal's first from behind the arc, gave them some life. But it was short-lived as the Huskies pulled away.

Stanford's 82-game home winning streak dated to a 68-61 loss to Florida State in the second round of the NCAA tournament on March 19, 2007.

This season's Cardinal stunned defending NCAA champion and then-top-ranked Baylor and Brittney Griner on Nov. 16 to become the nation's No. 1 team and avenge a loss in last spring's NCAA semifinals.

The Cardinal hardly looked like the best team Saturday against the dominant Huskies. They were held below 40 points for the first time since a 72-32 loss to Missouri on Jan. 2, 1984.

Stanford missed its initial 10 3-point tries and began the game 3 for 22 to fall behind 22-7, with UConn getting three quick 3s.

Ogwumike's big sister, Nnemkadi ? the 2012 No. 1 overall WNBA draft pick of the Los Angeles Sparks ? attended the game, along with other former Stanford players Rosalyn Gold-Onwude and Lindy La Rocque.

Stanford senior Joslyn Tinkle, the team's second-leading scorer, managed only two points while playing on her 22nd birthday.

Starbucks expands cup campaign aimed at U.S. fiscal deal

(Reuters) - Starbucks Corp is expanding its campaign of using messages written on coffee cups to inspire U.S. lawmakers to reach a deal and avoid going over the "fiscal cliff" of automatic tax hikes and government spending cuts.

As President Barack Obama and congressional leaders were in a final effort to reach a budget agreement before year's end, Starbucks this week began urging workers in its roughly 120 Washington, D.C.-area shops to write the words "come together" on customers' cups.

A spokesman for the world's largest coffee chain said the company would expand the effort to all U.S. stores, continuing through next week.

"Stores from across the country have been asking if they could join in and we have been saying absolutely yes," Starbucks spokesman Jim Olson said in an email late Friday.

"Based on this unprecedented response, we are inviting all of our partners at U.S. stores to start signing their customers' cups with Come Together through next Friday," Olson said.

Starbucks' cup campaign aims to send a message to sharply divided politicians and serve as a rallying cry for the public in the days leading up to the January 1 deadline to avert harsh across-the-board government spending reductions and tax increases that could send the U.S. economy back into recession.

"We believe the (Washington) DC effort caught on so swiftly because they Come Together message is such a simple and respectful gesture that expresses the optimism that is core to our country's heritage and to Starbucks mission," Olson said.

"This is an important moment for Starbucks to use its scale for good and give Come Together an even louder voice - as we move from signing tens of thousands of cups in DC to tens of millions of cups across the U.S. over the course of next week."

If you want to serve as a leader, then actually act like one, and be a leader. That means a leader must step forward while others stand on the sideline. Judge someone as a leader not by what they do regarding popular programs and ideas. Rather they must be judged by whether or not they stand up for what they believe, and take what are often difficult or challenging positions. Certainly it is challenging and even stressful at times to stand alone on principle, if you really believe in something. Leadership is about inner strength and fortitude, and doing and saying what needs to be do e, even if it may at times be unpopular or out of fashion.

1. I recall serving for nearly a decade, many years ago, as the Treasurer of a non profit. it seemed obvious to me that this particular organization, if it did not take steps to address putting their financial house in order, would soon be facing the prospect of insolvency. Although I was often overwhelmingly opposed, I continued to chastise, coerce, and demand that the Board acted responsibly. Years later, almost every one of my proposals was enacted, and although waiting as long as they did had a negative overall compacted fiscal and financial impact, the fact that they eventually did what was needed guaranteed the road to solvency and relevance. The interesting aspect, however, is that the very same people who openly bad mouthed me, and derided my point of view, eventually championed the battle, and were more than glad to take full credit for the accomplishment. However, the important thing is not who got the credit, but that what needed to get done, did.

2. Leadership must never be about one's ego or popularity. Rather, it is about webbing effectively, and bringing an organization to achieve and perform to its potential, and to accomplish worthwhile missions. Great leaders always begin with a vital vision, and that vision always acts to motivate them to commit to a greater extent, try harder, care more, and make more efforts to include others in the quest. The true mark of a great leader is not only getting followers to care, but developing the ones with the most potential, to become future true leaders.

It all begins with a leader's adherence to a basic principle or tenet, and using that to bring himself to bravely take a stand, when others resist. All organizations benefit from great leadership.

Getting into Shapes: From Hyperbolic Geometry to Cube Complexes

A proof announced in March resolved the last of 23 questions about 3D shapes posed in 1982 by mathematician William Thurston, marking the end of an era in the study of "three-manifolds"

hyperbolic geometry Figure 3. When viewed through the lens of hyperbolic geometry, all the fish are the same size. The curves that run along the fishes? spines are hyperbolic straight lines, or "geodesics." Image: Illustration: Douglas Dunham, University of Minnesota Duluth

From Simons Science News (find original story here).

Thirty years ago, the mathematician William Thurston articulated a grand vision: a taxonomy of all possible finite three-dimensional shapes.

Thurston, a Fields medalist who spent much of his career at Princeton and Cornell, had an uncanny ability to imagine the unimaginable: not just the shapes that live inside our ordinary three-dimensional space, but also the far vaster menagerie of shapes that involve such complicated twists and turns that they can only fit into higher-dimensional spaces. Where other mathematicians saw inchoate masses, Thurston saw structure: symmetries, surfaces, relationships between different shapes.

?Many people have an impression, based on years of schooling, that mathematics is an austere and formal subject concerned with complicated and ultimately confusing rules,? he wrote in 2009. ?Good mathematics is quite opposite to this. Mathematics is an art of human understanding. ? Mathematics sings when we feel it in our whole brain.?

At the core of Thurston?s vision was a marriage between two seemingly disparate ways of studying three-dimensional shapes: geometry, the familiar realm of angles, lengths, areas and volumes, and topology, which studies all the properties of a shape that don?t depend on precise geometric measurements ? the properties that remain unchanged if the shape gets stretched and distorted like Silly Putty.

To a topologist, the surface of a frying pan is equivalent to that of a table, a pencil or a soccer ball; the surface of a coffee mug is equivalent to a doughnut surface, or torus. From a topologist?s point of view, the multiplicity of two-dimensional shapes ? that is, surfaces ? essentially boils down to a simple list of categories: sphere-like surfaces, toroidal surfaces, and surfaces like the torus but with more than one hole. (Most of us think of spheres and tori as three-dimensional, but because mathematicians think of them as hollow surfaces, they consider them two-dimensional objects, measured in terms of surface area, not volume.)

Thurston?s key insight was that it is in the union of geometry and topology that three-dimensional shapes, or ?three-manifolds,? can be understood. Just as the topological category of ?two-manifolds? containing the surfaces of a frying pan and a pencil also contains a perfect sphere, Thurston conjectured that many categories of three-manifolds contain one exemplar, a three-manifold whose geometry is so perfect, so uniform, so beautiful that, as Walter Neumann of Columbia University is fond of saying, it ?rings like a bell.? What?s more, Thurston conjectured, shapes that don?t have such an exemplar can be carved up into chunks that do.

In a 1982 paper, Thurston set forth this ?geometrization conjecture? as part of a group of 23 questions about three-manifolds that offered mathematicians a road map toward a thorough understanding of three-dimensional shapes. (His list had 24 questions, but one of them, still unresolved, is more of an intriguing side alley than a main thoroughfare.)

?Thurston had this enormous talent for asking the right questions,? said Vladimir Markovic, a mathematician at the California Institute of Technology. ?Anyone can ask questions, but it?s rare for a question to lead to insight and beauty, the way Thurston?s questions always seemed to do.?

These questions inspired a new generation of mathematicians, dozens of whom chose to pursue their graduate studies under Thurston?s guidance. Thurston?s mathematical ?children? manifest his style, wrote Richard Brown of Johns Hopkins University. ?They seem to see mathematics the way a child views a carnival: full of wonder and joy, fascinated with each new discovery, and simply happy to be a part of the whole scene.?

In the decades after Thurston?s seminal paper appeared, mathematicians followed his road map, motivated less by possible applications than by a realization that three-manifolds occupy a sweet spot in the study of shapes. Two-dimensional shapes are a bit humdrum, easy to visualize and categorize. Four-, five- and higher-dimensional shapes are essentially untamable: the range of possibilities is so enormous that mathematicians have limited their ambitions to understanding specialized subclasses of them. For three-dimensional shapes, by contrast, the structures are mysterious and mind-boggling, but ultimately knowable.

How a Taliban suicide bomber wiped out a growing Afghan business

KABUL (Reuters) - When a Taliban suicide bomber killed two people on the edge of the Afghan capital this month, there was another casualty - a global fruit juice business optimistically called "Spring Wish" which provided work for thousands of farmers across the country.

Mustafa Sadiq's empire had been expanding healthily, bringing in badly needed foreign capital, before the attack inflicted the kind of financial loss cash-strapped Afghanistan can ill afford.

The pomegranate juice business was nearly wiped out in the split second it took the militant to detonate explosives in a truck parked near the factory on December 17.

Pieces of shredded metal were scattered everywhere. Chairs were hurled across the office where Sadiq had spent so much time figuring out how to beat the odds against decades of war, instability and hopelessness.

Sadiq was in Dubai drumming up new export deals when an assistant called with the bad news. The call that Sadiq said he did not get is also troubling him.

"So far no officials, for the sake of sympathy, have called us," Sadiq, 40, told Reuters, standing beside a year's supply of juice in containers that were ruined in the attack - nearly $10 million in losses overall.

"In this situation they should have called me and asked what kind of help they could provide. The agriculture, finance, commerce ministries. Nobody so far has visited or called."

The impact of the war, and expectations for the future, are often seen only through the eyes of Western or Afghan soldiers, or officials who point to the progress that has been made.

Sadiq offers another perspective. Some workers told him the bomber triggered the loudest blast they had heard in 30 years.

A Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 was followed by a decade of resistance by mujahideen fighters who drove them out. Then warlords carved out fiefdoms and destroyed half of the capital in the civil war that followed.

    DIRTY POLITICS

The Taliban took over, were toppled in 2001 and are now raising fears they may return when U.S.-led NATO troops hand over security to Afghan forces in 2014.

But Sadiq does not see the Taliban as the biggest threat to Afghanistan's future. Instead, he says, officials have turned politics into a commercial enterprise driven by corruption.

"Government employees think it's time to fill their pockets and grab whatever they can. That will pave the way for civil war," said Sadiq, as workers feverishly loaded boxes of the little fruit juice left onto a truck, and others worked to rebuild a brick wall.

"You have to struggle, not run away. It is kind of like running away now. They have walls around themselves sitting there and they do not have contact with ordinary Afghans."

His disillusionment is shared by the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

"There is no guarantee for investment in Afghanistan. People are afraid of the government, there is no rule of law. Government officials can do anything they want," the chamber's first vice-chairman, Jan Alokzai, told Reuters.

"President (Hamid) Karzai's words are only on paper and don't have any value."

Afghanistan's U.S.-backed government says it is committed to building up the economy, attracting foreign investment and helping Afghans secure a brighter future. Karzai says it is contracts with foreigners that spread graft.

    WISHFUL THINKING?

The government has highlighted 2014 as a year to invest in Afghanistan, which relies heavily on foreign aid, and to take advantage of its cheap labor and land leases.

In each of the 10 years following 2014, the government hopes revenues from oil, natural gas, iron, copper and other mining ventures will generate $4 billion in revenue.

Sadiq spent time in Europe, waiting for an opportunity to return and invest in his homeland. He eventually opened a factory in an industrial park along Kabul's dusty Jalalabad Road in 2008, from where he broke into overseas markets.

Spring Wish, which employed about 1,000 people, was selling produce to the health conscious in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, bringing money into Afghanistan, while anxious Afghans carted $4.5 billion in cash out of the country last year to safety.

But when asked about the maps on a wall identifying parts of Afghanistan which offer opportunities for farmers and businesses like his, Sadiq could only put his head in his hands and cry.

The dark red seeds from Sadiq's fruits were prized in Europe for their antioxidant qualities, and in Japan where many believe they can help fight cancers. He seems most proud of the fact that he helped 40,000 farmers across Afghanistan earn a living.

As Sadiq tries to persuade his staff to keep dreaming big and to rebuild, one question may haunt him for some time. The suicide bomber parked his truck in a lane between his company and a foreign firm.

The Taliban said it attacked an American company next door, but he still wonders whether his factory, which relied on Italian machinery and benefited from U.S. aid programs, was the target. And he acknowledges he is desperate for money from Western donors.

"Around 120 people were working here and this factory was totally destroyed in the suicide attack," said Mohammed Jaw, 28, a general operator for the company. "A number of our workers will lose their jobs and now everyone is concerned about what happens next."

Despite the loss, Sadiq's entrepreneurial and marketing spirit seems intact.

"Have you tried the juice with mulberry flavor?" he asked proudly. "It's really good."

Then a worker brought the moment back to reality. He lifted his cellphone to show a photograph of the suicide bomber's severed head.

    WWC: A Brief Recollection

My first work in the Writing forums here. It'd be extremely appreciated that feedback and criticism be provided. What a way to start here, huh?

EDIT: It would be prudent to note that this work is inspired from a story a friend told me.

My earliest memories were that of cold sensations and loud noises. There was a man I recognized as my dad shaking a bell at me. He made lots of funny noises. There was a woman I knew as my mom holding me while telling stories. Those memories were the only time I felt genuinely satisfied, if you could understand that. As I grew up, I wrapped my head more and more around the situation that I found myself in. I started to realize that the delivery truck that I slept in and the canned foods I ate every day weren't normal. I realized that cleaning myself at the fitness centers and standing in line at the soup kitchens weren't something a kid like myself did. I had to adjust to that quickly when I learned that I was "poor", and I hid that at school. Luckily, public education was still around and accessible, though I knew I would never be able to scrounge up the money needed to join a club or sport. The most embarrassing thing for me as a kid was before I learned any of this, and invited a couple of friends in the third grade over to the truck. They were less than impressed, so to say, and my social standing in school plummeted. I don't think I've had any close friends since word began to spread about my financial status.

I guess I should have tried to make the best out of that situation back then. All good things have to come to an end, and when my dad died because of malnutrition, my mother and I found ourselves without a way to pay for what meager necessities we needed to live. We starved for the first night. The next day my mom told me that she would start working. I wondered how, I learned that she dropped out of high school. I found out the hard way, while walking home from school and finding her bent over the back of our truck squealing like a pig. I don't think I was ever the same, but life goes on, and my mom kept running the same kinds of risks.

It was in high school that things really got bad for me. I was about to graduate school. I was in my senior year and with the limited resources I had, I was about to walk away with a diploma and find my first meaningful batch of work. I walked home one day and found my mother lying on one of the small mattresses in our truck, naked and covered in blood. Her cell phone, the only phone we had, was broken. I ran for help. I remember how everything felt surreal, like I was watching a play as I grabbed the nearest pedestrian. She was dead before she could reach the emergency room.

I kept things under wraps. My parents never reached out for help. I didn't know I could. What the doctors told me, what the policemen said, I didn't trust it. Edgy and clich?, I know, but I just didn't see how they could help me. There were tons of other people living in the same conditions I was, why should I have been the exception to the rule? I didn't believe that they could just make my problems vanish. So I lived by myself. The truck wasn't confiscated, and became my cold little barrier to the elements. I had no food, so naturally I knew I had to look for a job. However, nobody was hiring. To feed myself, I dug for scraps in trash bins. To stay warm, I took rags from the trash. I smelled like trash. I looked like trash. It shouldn't have surprised me that I found myself getting kicked out of the job center empty handed more and more quickly. I had to look presentable.

So I stole. I picked up a brick off the streets and went to well-to-do neighborhoods and broke into their cars. I stole valuables, and pawned them. I took money, and saved it. Then, I made a mad dash for relative safety. Eventually I managed to save enough to purchase a cheap suit and some cleaning supplies. I went back to the fitness center and freshened myself up. Lo and behold, I was finally offered a job like it was some magic spell. I took it without hesitation.

Of course, having a job didn't put an end to all my problems. It was a terrible job by most standards. It wasn't anywhere near enough to support my standard of living. It was, for all intents and purposes a part-time job. It didn't help that my co-workers knew I was street scum. I dressed in smelling clothes and probably smelled myself despite my attempts to freshen up as much as I could. Nobody talked to street scum, it was common sense. It was like trying to become buddies with the old hobo that sleeps in the alley. I understood that.

However, there was one girl who was different, in more ways than one. She was foreign, I knew that. I also knew that she held a better position than me. But more than her being foreign and having a better income, she also was the only one who bothered talking to me. I didn't know why she would, nor did I care. I was happy that I had somebody to talk to after so long. I lacked social interaction so likely I said a lot of things that were strange or misunderstood. She didn't seem to mind, though it may be because her grasp of the English language wasn't strong.

She was also quite nosy. We ate together at lunch, and she would bring up some embarrassing questions. I'd do my best to avoid them, but in the end she would give me a look that suggested she wasn't very impressed. One day, she finally dropped the bomb when I dodged yet another question about my life. "You're street shit, aren't you?" She asked bluntly. I couldn't respond. What could I say? I knew I smelled of it. The fitness center could only smarten up to my ways before barring me access entirely. She nodded, as if my silence were a confirmation and the next day she suggested we eat out, and demanded that I tell her everything. I had numbly nodded my head.

It was a pizza parlor, not to shabby of a place but it was a place that was forever engraved in my memory. I arrived early, and when I saw her walk in with a stack of forms, I couldn't believe my eyes. It was when she was somewhere in the middle of explaining to me what each form was and the benefits that I felt the tears rush to my eyes. For the first time in years, somebody was actually offering me a hand for help. It was too much for me to bear, and I began weeping like a child in a pizza parlor off the main street. She said nothing, but I remember her patting me on the shoulder awkwardly. For the first time, somebody wanted to help me. And for the first time, I reached out for help. I spilled the beans completely; I told her everything about my life. She only nodded occasionally, sliding me forms to fill out as quickly as I finished them.

After work the next day, she handed me a small backpack, and told me to gather my things. My truck, long since out of fuel in the lonely lot was not something I could take with me. She told me she'd have that taken care of. She told me about all the benefits I was missing out on, and reassured me that things will get better. I hung on to those words as the truth, daring to hope and believe in somebody for the first time. I was taken to a comfortable-looking apartment building after the day was done, and I marveled at how warm it was. She demanded that I take a shower, while she washed my grimy belongings, and I had no objections whatsoever.

There were new ground rules for me now. I could not leave the sofa after lights went out. I was to help out whenever she needed it, no exceptions. I had to continue filling out mountains of forms, and I couldn't use any of the electronic devices. I didn't care. Being given a home and somebody that cared was worth all of it. I dared not disobey her. Time continued to pass, however, and she began to trust me more and more. I was allowed to watch TV and go to the bathroom after she went to bed. I was trusted to go out and do the groceries now. She was my guardian and I was her loyal servant. It sounds lame, I know, but the life I had been given was something I dared not hope to have in the past.

One night she tells me to go and take a shower since I had not done so. I came back afterward to find that the sofa blankets and pillows had been put away. I go to inquire about this and she merely motions to her own bed.

"Is warmer to sleep together, no?"

I couldn't believe my eyes, though I dared not take this the wrong way. She hopped into the bed and I followed after closing the lights.

"No funny business." She says. I immediately affirm this. She seemed satisfied, snuggling up to my back. "You are gentleman. You do not deserve to sleep like pig in the mud outside." she says. She wraps her arms around me and seems to fall asleep. Of course, I thought about it, but as you guessed I made it my damned not to even come close to doing any of it. It took me a while, but eventually I did manage to fall asleep.

Christmas was around the corner at this point. I knew exactly what to get her. I had been carefully saving my precious income from the job, and made sure I could keep it a secret from her. After I purchased the gift, I was already excited for the holidays so I could give it to her. The days dragged by, and she became more and more eager for Christmas to roll around as well. On the night before Christmas, she stayed up with me, counting down the seconds until midnight. She even followed the childish rule that she could open one present then and the rest on Boxing Day. The moment the clock's hands reached the 12, she jumped up from the sofa.

"Christmas!" She squealed, moving over to the modest pile of gifts and agonizing over which one to open first. I stepped forward, tapping her shoulder and presented my gift. She snatched it from my hands with a wide smile, tearing at the wrapping with zeal. She pulled out of the plain box a flute, her eyes widening in amazement. I learned she used to play the flute as a child, but eventually gave it up. She had been saying she wanted to get back to it, but never had the spare change nor memory to purchase one. "Thank you! Thank you! How did you know?!" She exclaimed, enveloping me in a big hug. I hugged her back, telling her it was just a small way that I could repay her for everything she had done for me. She pulled back and smiled. "Well. Here is my present to you." She replied softly, a hint of rose coloring her cheeks. She pulled me into her bedroom, tugging my shirt off in preparation for a long night.

I woke up in a daze, suddenly aware of the sound of music floating in from the other room. I looked at the clothes on the floor, and my naked self and realized with overwhelming joy that last night was real. I dressed myself and quietly entered the other room, where she was sitting. She was in a trance, playing the flute I gave her with a nostalgic expression. She noticed me eventually though, and placed her present down, walking over to me.

"New rule." She begins in a matter-of-fact tone, "You do not accept any housing offers, ever. You are my boyfriend now." She says, smiling. I nodded mutely, and she gives me another huge hug. "Merry Christmas." She said. I hugged her back, returning the phrase.

Now officially a couple, I didn't see much of a change in our lifestyle. There were a few obvious ones, but our daily lives remained mostly the same. We continued to work, planning to spend a vacation somewhere nice. We took extra hours whenever we could, the extra workload didn't seem to bother us one bit now that we had a worthwhile goal. She had introduced me to her parents over the phone, and later she told me they approved until I met them. Everything was unnaturally perfect.

It was February then, when out of the blue she collapses at work. I dropped what I was doing the moment I heard the news, and headed straight for the hospital. They told me they were trying to figure out what happened and what to do. They told me she was in a coma. They told me a lot of things, and I can barely remember any of it in my state of shock. She didn't say a thing about it, if she knew anything. I could only watch her limp form as the machines beeped and whirred around her. Eventually I was forced to leave.

I immediately called her family, and after assuring them I would take care of her to the best of my ability, I spent most of my waking hours by her side. The doctors told me that perhaps some stimulation would wake her up, though by the tone of their voice it seemed like a hopeless prospect. Still, I continued to try. Every day, I would sit down next to her and whisper into her ear "Wake up babe, it's Christmas!". Sometimes, I thought I'd see her lips twitch into a brief smile.

In the end, it didn't work. They finally declared her to be brain dead, and against my will, I allowed them to cut the life support. I called her family, telling them what happened. I spent the days after preparing her body for the transport back home to the country she came from. I sent as much money as I could, determined to have her funeral be as lavish as possible. I quit work. I filed for unemployment and social security benefits. I hardly ever leave the house now, except to pick up groceries. I go to sleep at night clutching a picture of her.

If moving on means forgetting about her, I hope I never do.

Bumblebees do best where there is less pavement and more floral diversity

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Landscapes with large amounts of paved roads and impervious construction have lower numbers of ground-nesting bumblebees, which are important native pollinators, a study from The University of Texas at Austin and the University of California, Berkeley shows.

The study suggests that management strategies that reduce the local use of pavement and increase natural habitat within the landscape could improve nesting opportunities for wild bees and help protect food supplies around the word.

The study also suggests that increasing the number of species-rich flowering patches in suburban and urban gardens, farms and restored habitats could provide pathways for bees to forage and improve pollination services over larger areas.

The findings have major implications for global pollinator conservation on a rapidly urbanizing planet.

"We are potentially in a pollinator crisis," said Shalene Jha, lead author and assistant professor of biology at The University of Texas at Austin. "Honey bees are declining precipitously, and wild bees have also been exhibiting population declines across the globe. Native bees provide critical pollination services for fruit, nut, fiber and forage crops. Understanding how bees move around the landscape can help us both preserve biodiversity and improve crop yields."

Animal pollination is estimated to be worth over $200 billion in global crop yields.

For the research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Jha and senior author Claire Kremen, a professor at UC Berkeley's Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, studied a native California bumblebee, Bombus vosnesenskii, in habitats across exurban areas, farms and nature reserves.

In addition to finding that pavement negatively affects the bees, the scientists discovered that:

    • Bees will move longer distances to find patches of flowers that are rich in species; it's not floral density that determines how far a bumblebee will fly, but floral diversity.
    • Bees will also forage further away from their home nest if the surrounding landscape is less heterogeneous. "In some ways, it's a bet-hedging strategy," said Jha. "If the landscape is composed of consistently dense flowering patches, bees take a risk and forage farther afield to find species-rich patches."

"In combination with earlier work showing that bumblebees have become rare in agricultural landscapes, our study suggests that farmers could promote these valuable pollinators by diversifying crop types and by planting cover crops and flowering hedgerows to enhance floral diversity," said Kremen.

Though it may seem obvious that pavement and ground nesting don't mix, Jha said that our understanding of the effects of pavement and urban growth on native bees has been largely anecdotal.

"Using genetic tools, we can now estimate the number of colonies in an area," said Jha, who began this work as a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley. "This is helping us better understand how wild pollinators live and move across large, diverse landscapes."

Bumblebees nest in the ground, and each colony contains a queen and a force of workers. As with honeybees, all of the bumblebee workers are sisters who spend some of their time flying around searching for flowers from which to collect pollen and nectar to feed the larvae back in the hive.

Unlike honeybees, which are not native, bumblebees do not make harvestable honey. They do, however, provide important pollination services to plants.

"Bumblebees are among the most effective native pollinators," said Jha. "They are large and can carry a lot of pollen. They also vibrate or 'buzz' flowers with their bodies and thus are excellent at extracting pollen and moving it from plant to plant."

To study the bumblebees, Jha did not scour the landscape for nests in the ground, which has proved in the past to be very difficult, especially over large areas. Instead, she analyzed the genetic relatedness of bees foraging in the landscape.

If bees collected in an area were genetically identified as sisters, they came from the same colony. Unrelated bees came from different colonies. Jha used this information, plus the bees' locations, to estimate the number of bee colonies in an area and determine how far afield the individual bees were foraging.
