As a freshman at the University of Oregon four years ago, Marcus Triest was blissfully unaware of the price of college.

The debt they carry infuses their decision making, for example, influencing not only when they marry, but also who they marry.

Student debt makes for awkward conversation in the bloom of romance. ?Hey honey, by the way, that baggage in my closet, that?s all debt,? 26-year-old Marylhurst University student Sara Bates quipped.

The debt burden shouldered by the two-thirds of students who borrow to go to college is heavier than the debt their mother and father carried, said Mark Kantrowitz, the founder of finaid.org and an expert in college finances.

The smartest students start worrying about debt when they make their college plans. At college, they don?t dabble in coursework to find a subject that thrills them. The pressure is on to make a decision about their major ? and their career ? before the loan totals mount.

Because of the cost, it?s no longer feasible for students to work their way through college and emerge debt free. It takes more hours of work a week than most students can endure and still get good grades, Kantrowitz said.

In their 20s, students are leaving school laden with regret for the choices they made, the Rutgers study found. Thirty-seven percent said they wished they?d been more careful about choosing a major, 29 percent wished they?d done more internships, 24 percent would have begun looking for work while still in school and 20 percent would have taken more career-?oriented classes.

The job market has disappointed them. Only half found full-time work, the study found. Of those, only four in 10 were in a job that required a four-year degree.

?You went to college to pursue the American Dream,? Kantrowitz said, ?but because you graduated from college with too much debt and you can?t get a job, that dream is on hold.?

And even for those able to establish a solid career, the debt can seem daunting.

Nationwide, the summer of 2012 was enlivened with student-?loan true confessions, starting with President Obama, who said that he and the first lady graduated from law school with debt of $120,000, which they were able to retire only eight years ago.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., disclosed that he borrowed more than $100,000 to attend the University of Florida and the University of Miami.

Rohit Chopra, student loan ombudsman for the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, during a visit to the UO, admitted that he owes $90,000 for his degree from the Wharton School?s MBA Program.

UO student body President Laura Hinman ? who as a California resident is paying out-of-state fees ? said she expects to graduate with $100,000 in debt, about half in student loans and half in loans from family.

Irmary Reyes-Santos, a UO assistant professor of ethnic studies, still owes $40,000.

?It?s like any debt; you think, ?Well, I?ll have this for 30 years, unless I go into business and make really, really good money and I can make bigger payments,??? Reyes-Santos said. ?The reality is that?s not going to happen. I love my job. I love teaching.?

But Kirk Schueler, a hospital administrator and an Oregon Higher Education Board member, who spoke at the UO graduation this year, advised new graduates to shake off their worry about their student loans.

?You?ll make it through this tough job market as others have before you,? he said. ?You?ll pay off your loans, which for the majority of you is less the amount of a mid-sized car loan, which you might also be taking on soon.?

Royal Collection buys Warhol portraits of queen

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Royal Collection Trust has gone Pop Art with the purchase of four famous Andy Warhol portraits of Queen Elizabeth II.

The colorful screenprints are based on a formal photograph of the queen wearing a tiara and necklace that was used during her Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977.

They will form part of the Portraits of a Monarch exhibit starting in November at Windsor Castle. The purchase was announced Monday, but royal officials refused to say how much was paid for the portraits.

The purchase brings the distinctive style of the American artist to a collection of portraits of British rulers that dates back to the 15th Century.

"They are in a very interesting and contemporary technique that Andy Warhol really popularized, screen printing with wonderfully vibrant colors, in multiples," said Royal Librarian Jane Roberts. "They join a collection dating back 4, 5, 600 years. The fact that they are in a completely new technique is not surprising; things change."

Roberts said the queen had approved the purchase.

"The Warhol prints of the queen are in many ways the most important popular image of the queen to be created by an artist print maker over the last few decades," she said.

Warhol, who died in 1987, was one of the most commercially successful artists of the 20th Century and used similar techniques in portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, and Elvis Presley. He created these images of the queen in 1985 as part of a portfolio of screenprints called "Reigning Queens."

The exhibit will be open to people who visit Windsor Castle, which is roughly 20 miles west of London. It will run until June 2013.

Trawler turns up weird deep-sea sharks

A two-month fishing expedition to the Indian Ocean has turned up hundreds of strange deep-sea sharks, and several are likely new to science.

At least eight new species could be among the fishy haul, said Paul Clerkin, a shark ecology graduate student at California's Moss Landing Marine Laboratories.

Clerkin joined the commercial fishing venture in March and April of this year, in hopes that the vessel's massive trawling nets might pluck sharks from the deep sea. He was not disappointed.

"I tell people I have a ton of sharks, and they keep thinking I?m joking," Clerkin said. "It was an actual ton. I brought back 350 sharks." [ See some of the sharks ]

The sharks were caught as bycatch from depths of about 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) from a region of undersea mountains, or seamounts, about a week's journey south of the island of Mauritius.

Day after day, the ship's nets brought up dozens of bizarre sharks from the deep ? some dainty, some enormous, nearly all of them rare or entirely new species.

"They don?t look like the classic great whites you'll see on Shark Week," Clerkin said. "I think they're more interesting." Weird features abound: knifelike snouts, moonlike eyes and at least one shark with a curved, serrated spine emerging from its back.

Among the largest was a false catshark, a pointy-faced fish about 10 feet (3 m) long. Although it's a known species, it's a notoriously elusive one.

"It was exciting because I knew they were really rare, and the chance of seeing them was pretty small," Clerkin told OurAmazingPlanet. Yet after a while, he said, he began to think the species isn't nearly as rare as the literature suggests.

"We actually caught a lot ? close to 35," he said, adding that it's likely humans simply haven't explored the parts of the ocean where false catsharks live. "I think it shows there's a lot we don't understand about sharks," he said.

Clerkin is taking between 80 and 90 measurements from each shark, a time-consuming task, and is also sending off genetic samples for comparison.

If the any of the species are indeed new, Clerkin gets to name them. He said he'll likely name some of the sharks for his science mentors. "And maybe I'll name one after my mom," he said.
